  • Caplin thinking : what are these?

  • If you like these animals help save the Amazonas.

  • teeehehee so cute! probably in the internal world of Caplin, this meet fractured his reality when suddenly he realised he wasn't human :P heheh

  • Caplin is playing it cool in front of the she-baras!

I heard capys are very social and do well in pairs- but I was wondering about the type of enrichment you would use when you just own one...

  • Dogs are much easier to look after and much more fun....

All these people looking at these vids going "so cute, I want one" know nothing abou how difficult it is to actually look after these animals.

  • @whataboutredlorry That's great that you like dogs but you don't know anything about capybaras so I don't think you can judge which is "more fun." Plus, people differ in what the consider fun. My videos and blog attempt to educate people about capybaras and how much work they are to keep as pets so it is quite possible that my viewers know more than you do about that.

  • @caplincapybara Actually I do know a bit about Capys which is why I said they are difficult to look after. Because they are. And not just every person who thinks "oh he is so cute" should go out and try and get one. They require time, patience, and money - generally in greater quantities than a more... say, common pet animal - like a dog, or cage-rodent.

And yeah, dogs are still.... in my opinion, more fun.

  • @caplincapybara I wish i have a capybadassbara :) so cute and I love watching Caplin !

  • Can they be potty trained to go outside like a dog?

  • @ad9899 Caplin uses a bowl of water by the toilet. I am not sure if they can be trained to go outside only but I suspect they can. They are very smart.

  • @caplincapybara I would rather my dog be trained to use a bowl of water by the toilet..not that I wouldn't walk him. hahah

  • I have so much to tell you! About popsicles!

  • My wifes family farm has a large population of wild Capy's, how could I take a baby and raise it as a pet? also. what do the local breed Capy's sell for? my wife is from Brazil and their farm is in the northeast of Brazil, so wild Capy's are not all the unusual!!

  • @gwrash I do not know what the laws are where you are but first make sure it is legal to take a capybara from the wild. If it is, just go out and pick a baby one off the road at night, they are pretty easy to catch, at least in Venezuela. Or you might be able to buy one from a ranch/farm. I do not know if anyone in Brazil sells them.

Baby capybaras need to be feed milk. We used goat milk replacement powder for about one year, less of it over time. They need grass, fruit, vegetables, attention.

  • @gwrash Not that I am advocating getting one for a pet. They are a lot of work and may become aggressive. Please read my blog for more information.

  • He really is cute. I wouldn't mind having one. I'm in Texas too. Do you have to have an exotic pet permit? Just curious. I'm seriously thinking about getting one. Wonder how it would like climbing stairs? (We have a two story house.)

  • @jonimueller Caplin can climb stairs but he doesn't like it. Their backs are not very flexible. Also he doesn't like slick floors. Texas is pretty lax on exotics. You don't even need a permit to have a tiger. But there may be local restrictions.

  • lol they sounds smarter than my guinea pigs

  • i love these videos they are my favorite i wish i could have a capybara they are so cute!!!

  • Can they be housetrained? Just curious.

  • Capybaras are pretty much housetrained by default. Caplin uses a bowl of water next to the toilet as his toilet. After each use we just dump the water into the toilet. In general, capybaras prefer to urinate and defecate in water if possible.

  • Caplin is very mellow! Thanks for posting

  • Oh how cute is that! And those people sure have a nice yard for their pets! I like when the baby gave Caplin a kiss at the end. :) Or was that a nibble?!

  • Nice to see Caplin got to finally meet his own kind. What are the odds you'd meet someone at Lowes who also had capybaras?

    Lucky Caplin.

  • Dumb question, but I can't help asking: Does Caplin know he's a capybara? It's not as though he seemed indifferent to the others here, but I've known dogs who preferred the company of people to other canines.

  • I think Caplin thinks he is a person. He didn't seem to have any idea that he had anything in common with those other capybaras. He likes to be around people.

  • Oh man! I wish I could see that many at once in person :)

  • Why do those other people keep so many Capybaras?

  • They started out with five and now they have this many. They are planning on getting some of them neutered. Of course they are concerned with what happened to Caplin. And the capybaras have several acres to roam in so it's not like they are crowded.

  • Wait what happened to Caplin??? D:

  • He was temporarily paralyzed. You can watch Caplin Rous is Sick to see what that was like. It was terrible.

  • Oh my gosh poor little guy!! I'm ao glad he got better, and hope that doesn't happen to the others... :( Maybe they can use a topical anesthetic or something different...

  • What is their anatomy like? I mean if they have bits that hand down they could be banded instead but being they aren't tame I guess they would still need sedated.

  • I'm not sure banding would work. They have a cloaca (a single opening for reproduction and elimination). We couldn't even figure out Caplin's sex until he was five months old. I think Caplin's reaction to the anesthesia was atypical but it does scare me.

  • Similar to tamanduas then, though both genders have a sexual mound. There's a little different shape and the opening is different so you can tell if you get hands on but nothing hanging down on the males either. From what I read they are tucked up between their bladder and bowel so would be more of a spay if you had to. I'd be terrified for an anteater though since their most famous ailments are bleeding disorders at least they are known to do just fine with the anesthesia.

  • i asked you, tamanduagirl, about tamanduas as pets then i asked hippopotatomus the same question about capybaras.
