You know, you could have fixed the water curtain by digging a trench 1 or 2 blocks deeo right on the water line. It would prevent the water from coming in the house because it will go right past the floor level into the trench, preventing it from spreading.

lol gravel does kill you, it's just the torch that saved you. Torches can be a good way to harvest gravity affected blocks, like sand and gravel. Just dig underneath one and place a torch before it falls down. it's better than a shovel, in some ways.
