This opening sequence has to be from November of 1995. Mark Johnson would remain as sports director at Channel 4 Action News for about another year before leaving.
In the late 90s, HATV had all the station switch over to a similar graphics pkg and Frank Gari theme music ("Image News" in most cases, the "B Package" in some)... in '05, most of the stations switched over to the new HATV theme music and similar graphics pkg. (I think WMUR was the only one not to switch theme music.)
I remember that open for WTAE-TV. It was until circa 2005 that Hearst-Argyle used their own music as well as theme for all of their stations, including WTAE.

I think this might be from before 1997, since Andrew Stockey was the sports director by then.

I've seen this on WCVB-TV in Boston back then.

How old was Joe DiNardo when he retired? He looks about 86 in this open.

And now, Flagship is in full-time usage, with the "Where The News Comes First" signature of the Hearst theme only used in the 7-day forecast.

@amnewsboy Hearst actually had Gari make both of those. (WCVB would be the first to use Image News (Nov. 1995) and the NMC package (2003).)

Wait, this was Hearst-Argyle's first theme and news music? Looks like I didn't compare this with KMBC's.

Kickass graphics - I'd rather these still be on the HATV stations, with some modifications, of course

Looks as if you have a station version of the re-open since it continues after the music is over. How did you get that?

a) You're absolutely right, and b) the station I work for (a HATV station) is moving -- so these things are getting recycled and such.
