my laptop I-phone 4, electric guitar and amp + wallet + old laptop + a hard drive which had all my backup from year 2004 were stolen while i was sleeping and they were all in the same room..... hate thieves.... The biggest lost they caused me was my backup... i am not worried about items worth $3000 but my semister projects, my porfolio, family pics and every thing was there ... like if you hate theifs.

@Bestmexican718 Sorry to hear your laptop got stolen. This program is not a full proof method. Nothing is unfortunately. All you can do is a series of different things to help prevent theft in the first place and then make it difficult for the person that takes it to even turn it on, or if they can turn it on, hopefully you can find who it is so you can supriise visit them.
@twinbytesinc If you "make it difficult for the person that takes it to even turn it on" then the preyProject app won't run. See my comment on bestMexican's post.
@Bestmexican718 The preyproject website suggests that you set a bios password on your laptop and disallow booting from a device (or a CD): that makes it a bit harder to crack the system. You should also set up a user account without admin privileges and without a password to enable/entice anyone who steals the laptop to actually use it. That way, the laptop will be available for geotracking via wifi as soon as the idiotic thief starts to use it. But the chances are it will be reformatted anyway.

What happens when the thief steals it and doesn't go online and instantly re-formats the hard drive? The answer is obvious and makes this software about 60% effective. I'm just saying there are some smart thieves out there. The best way to protect a laptop is not to let it out of your sight.
@haxboxproductions This is the problem with all the free track your stolen lap top type software. Computrace LoJack is much harder for the standard thief to remove, but the work around for that is still not very hard for a smart computer thief and it also requires internet to be tracked.

You could call Apple or the store you bought it from and ask them if there was some sort of tracking software on that particular model you bought. sometimes the reseller puts stuff on ahead of time.

Ya, a brand new charger from the manufactuer might cost about $100 but you could go to your local electronics store like Radio Shack or Circuit City type of store and build your own custom charger for like $30. You get the correct voltage and the correct fitting end, put them together and you got a charger that works. :)
