  • Makes your soul melt. Words cannot express.

  • You would need to have no soul and you would have to possess a cold mind and a cold heart not to be moved by this.

I feel sorry for anyone who is unable to feel and appreciate the wonderful emotion in this song.

It's a brilliant, sensitive, heart-wrenching performance by a great artist. No need to say more.

  • there are 20 assholes who don't like Baker

  • this song mae me cry for the first time in 7 years

  • Somebody of his band knocks him both teeth out.because he spend the whole gage rather for heroin.bad Chetibaby, but we love you.....

  • The fella looks constipated.

  • @coccolenz sorry if i'm the first 2 tell u r a friggin' idiot..hey, i take that back..i'm not sorry 4 callin' u out as a f*ckin' idiot

  • @coccolenz Taking heroin does that; if you're addicted and withdraw, the opposite happens!

  • Chet Baker, the Bop Bix Beiderbecke and I can assure you that is NOT a compliment.

  • simplemente genial

  • What a genius. What strange quiet balls. What concentration, to keep that emotional moment going, that line flowing, his fertility of invention...and he never drops the line...Like a great Brando moment, a genius of introspective exhibitionism.

  • Yeah Bro!

  • it has never been the same since you

  • Some get too obsessed with his drug use. The music is beautiful.

  • anyone know who that is on the piano?

  • he's awesome...creates a unique mood...perfect for chilly, rainy evenings...the missing tooth is a bit tough though...

  • Essa música é eterna, Chet Baker é eterno... O mundo inteiro adora o jazz norte americano, a música de vocês é a melhor!

  • I just melted listening to the song.....

  • this is in my top ten favorite videos on youtube

  • He looks like Flea!

  • 19 people believe that teeth is all that matters.

  • Read this book...what a read! "Deep in a Dream, The Long night of Chet Baker" by James Gavin. You'll understand so much more about this artist.

  • Fantastic. The song 'Lets get lost' got me hooked on this guy.

  • Genious!

  • there goes my goosebumps

  • Beautiful!!!!!!

  • suave..saludos

  • fragments of a dream within my dream ,was it ever real, perhaps not.

  • @jasonsback for some reason what you said couldn't have been more accurate to what i was thinkin

  • this is gold!

if i can get trumpet skill and singing skill as good as him, i will offer my 2 front teeth

  • Two missing front teeth would help with neither trumpet playing nor singing

  • @hartanto07 you couldnt play your trumpet without your two front teeth :)

  • @hiphopopotamus5 He can get dentures. That's what Chet Baker did when he got his front teeth knocked out.

  • @soCtra Not that easy jack...if you're a trumpet player your front teeth are everything. Just enjoy the sound. I remember when you couldnt even find Chet on youtube. Anyone who is here listening is good enough.

  • @hartanto07 pff, I'd offer both my eyes!

  • @hartanto07 I'm with you!

  • @hartanto07 yes, this is incredible and 2 front teeth are nothing compared to having such a gift. But tell me, would you also be willing to take on Chet Baker's heroin addiction (which is why the missing teeth in the first place)?

  • Dang, he actually sings very well. I had no idea!

  • @mannsam63 His singing and trumpet playing changed a lot in like ten years. I think people mostly judge his singing ability in his later years, which diminished.

  • Who says white guys don't have soul?

  • oh,my! What mrd2u2usucks wrote it down is the most perfect rendition tothe grace of being human. The person(mrd2u2usucks) is clearly a poet and a firm believer in the greatness of music, and of course,Chet-one of the greatest EVER!

Thanks for posting it,and thanks mrd2u2usucks !You´ve bought me some beauty...

  • forget Sinatra, this guy's king of them all

  • is there any CD i can buy to get this version of the song?

  • I want to buy Chet a new tooth, some really clean heroin, a glass of good scotch and let him watch as a few friends of mine beat the shit out of the guy that punched his tooth out. Then let him do a 2nd take of this letting the poor flute player do a solo as Chet ties off and comes back with that smooth heroin induced ending to an otherwise perfect and beautiful rendition of a great song.

  • I love how direct, yet moving his performance is. Ah...

  • The whole drama of the performance is ... will the flute player get the solo he keeps preparing to give? LOL

  • Sigh.... so sadly missed !!

  • il n'y a pas de nationalié quand on fait de la musique, c'est un langage universel

  • Who the hell could dislike this song? Even if you aren't a jazz fan at all (which would make it weird for you to come across this video at all in the first place), you can at least appreciate it for the artistic value and Chet's velvety voice. And if you have no soul and you can't do that at least, then at least have the common courtesy move on to another video rather than press 'dislike'

  • I'd always loved rock & blues. Always avoided jazz. Then I was introduced to Chet Baker - I discovered jazz. Thank you Jackie.

  • 19 dislikes, It is sad that there should be such people.

  • I'm proud to be belgian

  • @plukkeheid ....was Chet Baker Belgian?

  • @banduril From Oklahoma.

  • @banduril No he's not, but the jazz scene was mostly big in the region of belgium, holland

  • Good intro :)

  • <3

  • "Tooth" bad we dont here this stuff anymore. Hehe :D

  • Beautiful. Chet is just as high as I am off this.

  • dope man knocked his teeth out for unpaid bill, bad for trumpet man.

  • Holy cheese. Chet. You're gonna break my heart.

  • wow. and to think nowadays we have britney, cyrus and bieber with more money and fame than all of the great musicians combined! what a shame! The world is coming to an end!

  • Chet Baker sings with so much feeling and jazz at the same time.

  • Any piece of music that Chet Baker ever touched instantly turned into "Jazz Sublimity"; too bad his special touch didn't work in his personal life --- then again maybe if it had, we wouldn't have been treated to all these majestic expressions of emotional honesty and tuneful integrity.

Chet Baker -- RIP and thanks for all the musical magic.

  • @NothingMaster Wow, very nice formulated. I hope you don't mind that I save this comment in my notes.

  • @NothingMaster I've just discovered Chet Barker, but your comment is very beautiful!

  • You could not have expressed the above more articulately. I have had the same thoughts. In his singing and playing there is such a haunting suffering declared. It is indeed majestic.

  • Chet makes have missing teeth, cool again! The Patron Saint of Missing Teeth! Live and learn, plastic botox world. All your money won't produce music like this.Only buy you fake teeth and butt implants. Once again, the Soul is mighter than the physical body! Yeah!

  • Soulful. Beautiful. Timeless.

  • A CLASS ACT. RAD.

  • I'm gonna kill his dentist.

  • I love his músic , and understand his drug addiction . But i cant stand The missing teeth , i' m ginj

  • çok çok beğendim ahmetcim:))

  • how is he playing trumpet sitting down?

  • Lucky To hear This

  • Superbe, Merveilleux, Beau !!!!

  • he's one of a kind........ straight from the heart.

  • who the hell are the 17 morons who dislike HIM really Crazy nut jobs

  • he's amazing...

  • Funny how some people really do not understand the inner torment some humans deal with their whole lives.

  • Es sencillamente hermosa esta canción. Sólo que hay que estar enamorado, realmente enamorado para entender cada acorde.

  • Chet sang the way he played...immaculate, understated, clear, and with a certain restraint that hinted at the passion underneath. A great musician.

  • Bullshit Tommyfazz. "When did music ever stop being beautiful?" We are swamped with shit music these days and with the internet it's all getting out there unhindered. Of course there's beautiful stuff too but it's often adrift in a sea of shit.

  • @101watts so when DID beautiful music stop being beautiful?

  • Interesting oversight.

  • this guy was a drug addicted wasted human being AND he also contributed as much or more to humanity than any senator, doctor, priest, or athlete alive today and THAT'S NO BULL

Well at least that's the way I see it.

  • There is always one complete idiot in the crowd and BRADMAN you're it

  • i HATE his singing but his horn playing is so goddamn good!!!

  • MUG

  • In short, there are only two types of music... good and bad... apart from which, this is bloody good!

  • raaah raaah wonderful!!!....

  • cant everybody just GET OVER the teeth and dope its a music vid not a film about dentistry!

  • what make of flugel is that? it looks alittle like an Olds superstar from some angles ; lovely tone wonderful playing , great post.

  • Even the ice cubes in my glass are melted by this music....

  • i must have listen to this a hundred times, the way he plays really is magical and his voice so unique, no one like him and there never will be again.

  • So beautiful...no need to say someting...

  • i love his voice...

  • In 1966, Baker was savagely beaten by a group of people (allegedly while attempting to buy drugs) after a gig in San Francisco, sustaining severe cuts on the lips and broken front teeth, which ruined his embouchure.

  • Is he missing a tooth?!

  • @flygendeballong The myth is that he had them knocked out in a fight but this shows that he had already lost one. The counter-theory is it was gum disease and he ended up having to have more removed. This didn't sound so good so he made up the fight story. Thats the two versions make your own choice!

  • so breathly

  • Simply perfect in every way. I love you Chet. Thank You for posting this nidale86.

  • like is an understatement

  • breath taking......

  • Chet's playing is always great, on horse or not. But whoever tuned that piano was on crack.

  • @EddieHaskelll it was the tape

  • 1964??? So great video and music

  • Beautifully wonderful.

  • I heard the story of his life and it's tragic end, but this is the first time I have seen him play, and on such a high quality clip. Transported to another dimension, utterly breathtaking! Thanks for posting,it has gone straight to my favourites.

  • I love this

  • 17 people need a good punch in the face.

  • @iywtuao 18...!

    :B

  • @iywtuao And a boot.

  • @iywtuao Make that 19. What is wrong with people.....

  • @iywtuao Make that 19 people who need a trompet in their ass

  • Cry, Chet. Cry.

  • @lamagnifiquemode He always does, its some amazing shit

  • Gorgeous. I am wondering if '64 is the correct year though...didn't he lose his front teeth in '66?

  • @hottubz1965 He lost that tooth as a young man. Some pictures of him in his 20s show it missing. You just have to find a pic of him smiling showing teeth. He usually hides them you will notice. He didn't lose his teeth in a beating, they got ruined due to neglect because of his drug problem . Bill Evans got dentures in his 40s for the same reason. Chet had bad teeth before the assault in San Francisco. The dentist pulled them all then because they were ruined, but not from the assault.

  • @spacecowboyau it was from the beating theres a documentary on him. he explains it himself

  • @maximus50238 'Lets Get Lost' is not an accurate account of his life. You can see how stoned he is at various times in the film. Would you believe everything in a film that uses him in that state. His family & girlfriends who appear in it all felt upset by the film after they saw it. They are all critical of the director Bruce Weber. Read the biography 'Chet Baker His Life & Music' by the journalist Jeroen De Valk. This is a serious work on Chets life, career & problems.

  • @maximus50238 In the film, his then girlfriend also said that HIS account of his ass kicking probably wasnt the truth...in so many words...She pretty much said that his junkie behavior got his ass kicked.

  • @VoodooPolitico i realize that. im not saying that he got beaten without him egging them on or something. all im saying is that he got his ass kicked and his teeth got knocked out

  • @hottubz1965 He lost that tooth as a young man. Some pictures of him in his 20s show it missing. You just have to find a pic of him smiling showing teeth. He usually hides them you will notice. • how could those 16 people click the unlike button?

  • Oh Chet, you break my heart and mend it at the same time.

The darkness in your life has given light to mine, and i thank you.

  • @xheartshapebox What a wonderful turn of phrase...I am gonna borrow it!

  • je surkifffffff

  • love chet. he is high as a kite can be. good for him. heroin.

  • Can you believe this voice died addicted to drugs...falling from a window in amsterdam?

Incredible contrast, beauty and the beast.

  • A lovely way with sound ..

  • Pure musicianship. It survives everything he & others did to him. His face was beaten in by his dope dealer. He couldnt stop making beautiful sounds, whether they sold or not. See the film, "Lets get Lost".

  • @dgisit-you've said it all :)

  • Chet was a musical genius and anyone who does not get it should jump in a lake!! Van Gogh lived a tragic life also so. I guess he was weak also?? They poured there heart and soul into everything thing they did artistically and that is what made them great. They where willing to pay the price to share there gifts with us. Honesty with yourself takes lots of bravery! But sometimes the cruelty of people on this earth can be too much for even the bravest.

  • @robbytrump wow you're judgmental.. guess you've never made any mistakes in your life..

  • magical ....

  • @robbytrump Chet died in 1988, did you ever heard his 1987 album "Live in Tokyo"? Sounds like very good crap

  • @robbytrump his weakness was human

  • Comment removed

  • the first man i ever loved...

  • By the single sun . . This whole world is illumined: By its one knower . . The field is illumined.

  • Smokey music that causes one to pause an sense an inner peace that is sweet.

  • @rubbytrump-being weak is human. He should be looked from the artist side, and that one none can dispute. So, stop digging into his private life, take him as musician whose music will live after all of us here are gone. I'm sorry, but I hear in your comment jealousy, and that is very very bad.

  • He was just deep in a dream, he switched the sides completely . But, boy, his dream was incredible enough to pull you so gently in without any drugs.

The other side was his real nightmare, only through music he was able to escape from. He was not addicted to heroin, but to music. And that's why I adore him!

  • did not know him before seeing him here on youtube. Can't believe I have lived my 55 years without knowing him! He is incredible!

  • great song! ♥

  • i love his trumpet playing so much. hes so relaxed the whole time. he plays like he has all the time in the world, rather than rushing to play fast lines. and its so perfect.

  • damn.....how can he be so cool!!......

  • With this voice and music i dont need any drugs...

  • @MrVonBriesen

    Too bad he did

  • @MrVonBriesen

    Too bad he did.

  • @MrVonBriesen he was actualy a well know drug adict

  • @MrVonBriesen Chet needed a lot of them jejeje. just kidding this is amazing either you are high or something or not.

    peace.

  • Yep, unfortunately many artists needed, drugs has been given us real music master pieces

  • @MrVonBriesen He did :D

  • @MrVonBriesen Sorry, but I prefer doing drugs while listening to Chet.....makes me feel closer to him (*_~)

  • haha ok man, but i prefer to live a little more to lisent to more jazz sounds.. and music.. :)

  • @MrVonBriesen Hmm.....well I still have all my teeth, and I haven't fallen out a window.....yet!

  • @logansGT I can dig it!

  • @MrVonBriesen too bad he did :/

  • @MrVonBriesen unfortunately he did :(

  • @MrVonBriesen pretty sure chet would've disagreed with that

  • @MrVonBriesen I met people who had met him, everybody said that he was

very arrogant, and yes,,, was appreciated, but only as a musician

but not as a person, and he suffered much of this

  • @gsaxita That´s interesting, but it´s difficult to imagine because all that sensitivity that he had, maybe his only firend was the jazz music and unfortunately, his master were the drugs..

  • All I meant by that was, pretty much like you said, heroin isn't some magical ticket into musical stardom. There are plenty of heroin addicts who can't play music at all. More likely Chet was just really talented from the start and heroin didn't even help those guys. Charlie Parker even said it doesn't help. it makes you slump over and shit. slows you down.. it's more like the genius is what pulls them into drugs.. not drugs pulls them into being geniuses.

  • I love Chet's music but wonder why people post such utter tripe as: ''...and to make me realise that there was once beauty in music. '' When did music ever stop being beautiful? Classics are recorded for all to hear and beautiful music continues to be made on a daily basis. Please stop writing drivel.

  • @Tommyfazz I think what people really mean to say is that there was a time when music used to sound really classy and subtle. In general, I agree with the sentiment that what's on the air currently in general is not like what it used to be (though there are occasional gems from time to time). Trends seem to dictate an oversimplification of music when you consider that there was more art and soul in music during the 60s (to name just one fruitful decade) as opposed to the prevailing sound.
