To keep the East Berliners from escaping to West Berlin. You see, from 1949-1961, hundreds of thousands of East Germans fled to the west to escape oppression. The Communists didn't like that! So, they built the Berlin Wall and anyone who tried to climb over would be shot on sight.

The wall was Built around the western part of the city for more than just one reason. Probably the biggest reason for the construction of the wall was to prevent an invasion of East Gemany through Berlin. There are of course other reasons but I'm not going to try and go over all of them right now.

@Salam545 I have no doubt that there are Palestinians who genuinely want peace, but they're in an impossible situation; as much threatened by the militants they voted into power as they are by Israeli counterattacks. I don't like the wall, but given that the militants have treated every concession Israel has made as a weakness to be exploited further (Gaza rockets), I see no reason to believe that taking down the wall would not simply lead to more attacks on Israeli civilians like in the videos.

To keep the East Berliners from escaping to West Berlin. You see, from 1949-1961, hundreds of thousands of East Germans fled to the west to escape oppression. The Communists didn't like that! So, they built the Berlin Wall and anyone who tried to climb over would be shot on sight.

Since this Wall fell down in 1989, other walls have been erected across the world - the external EU borders, the US-Mexican border just to name a few. And nowadays, some EU countries are talking about reestablishing the internal borders within the Schengen Zone. Apparently, the humanity hasn't learned anything from the dreadful experience of the past. By the way, it was Americans along with Brits and Russians who divided Europe back then. I have no sympathy for any of these people. Germany was divided because she started ww2 and invaded Russia. Hitler had a non-aggression pact with Russia and he broke it and the German citizens cheered. They reaped what they sowed. Just remember that none of this would have happened had Germany not started WW2.

The fact that not every single one of them supported the regime, doesn't mean the overwhelming majority didn't. So I feel sorry for the individuals who were against them, just not the ones that supported him or were neutral.

@gato123452 In short, Berlin was in the Middle of the German Democratic Republic, but West Germany conrtroled the western half of the city. The wall was Built around the western part of the city for more than just one reason. Probably the biggest reason for the construction of the wall was to prevent an invasion of East Gemany through Berlin. There are of course other reasons but I'm not going to try and go over all of them right now.

@Comradevoss West Berlin was split between Britain, France, and the USA, while East Berlin was given to the USSR. The Berlin Wall was built to prevent people in East Berlin from moving to West Berlin; under the Communist rule, standard of living there was significantly decreased, and there were very few Germans who were willing to tough it out when capitalism was-- literally, for some-- just across the street.
But you got the gist of it. Sorry if I sound like a smartass. I do that.

I suppose it's much easier and more convenient to claim it was built for the sole purpose of trapping people in the GDR. Anyway I learned that there isn't really any point in debating stuff like this with people. It seems no matter how much evidence I provide in my favor, people either won't or don't want to believe what I say, and simply dicount it as Propaganda and lies.

Do you think Russia and eastern europe suffered more at the hands of the soviets than the nazi's? Millions of Germans died horrible deaths at the hands of the allies after the war. I remember the story of young soldiers in a tank company, that wanted to escape and thought "damn, we got a tank...", so they drove through the wall to the west, after this mines and antitank barriers were laid out and of course it was controlled WHO is allowed to drive with such weapons near the wall or border... here young soldiers are showed at the wall, later only special troops belonging to the "Mfs" (Stasi, the DDR-Gestapo) were guarding the wall and border, they were fanatic communists..

If you ever meet a German abroad he most likely is a snitcher of the BND, doing exactly what he is told by his state. I was tortured several times abroad to force me back to Germany. I know of many other cases where Germans not being snitchers had been forced back or were prevented to leave Germany in the first place.

The west has done a very good job of this in asia and latin america after ww2. The people should be able to choose there goverment, there religion, and beliefs, most importantly they should not be able to force there views on others. I lived in West Berlin for about 7-8 months, moving there in November/1961. The Berlin Wall was only 3 months old. Haven't been back since; that is before this video transported me there & then, in an instant. Thank you, or should I say, Danke.
