  • He's holding his thumb over the top a bit to brake it. I miss Michael Hedges.

  • I love Michael Hedges. He's one of my favorites along with Tommy Emmanuel. I like them because they weren't scared to go outside the box and stretch the boundaries. My favorite Musician is Stevie Wonder and I like him for the same reason.

  • Thank you so very much for posting this video...I can't express in words how much I appreciate the fact that Michael lives on here as well as in your other videos....thanks type3!!! BTW, whatever happened to the version of Watchtower done at the small venue where this one took place...I miss that version bigtime. Take care man!

  • I CAN'T BELEAVE THAT 4 PEOPLE DISLIKE THIS VIDEO THEY ALL MUST BE BUM BUDDIES (*?*)

  • I love that stroke he gets at 4:30 it's so intense, I've been coming back for years to see it

  • what an original player he was ..

  • What he does at around 3:16? Some sort of power pull-off while sliding. That very weird slipping sound (and he then slaps harmonics after it). I'd like to see somewhere about such technique.

Anyhow, those sad, high pitch notes that comes up when he slaps somewhere around harmonics... Oh man thats intense and powerfull

  • Proud to be 300+ of 71k views. This is Hedges most brilliant work I've seen.

  • Where the heck was I when this amazing gift was laid out like new light !

  • The more I hear this, the more I realize how awesome a piece it is, and only Michael Hedges could play it like that.

  • I hate the thought of me living in a world that Michael Hedges doesn't live in.

  • Words cant explain..........

  • How the hell does he get that didgeridoo sound at 5:19 and 5:24...?

  • @Cavin8r Think it's the bass string, very loose, vibrating a lot and a bit wildly, maybe hitting wood? Can the guitar professionals chime in?

  • @type3secretion Well yes... but it's only down two steps from e to D, if it was like Aerial Boundaries where the string is way down to C, then maybe... But still, I can't see it.

  • @type3secretion thats correct, that bass string is in C and we all know how hard michael plays his guitars

  • @type3secretion it's his low C string vibrating wildly after being struck very hard. Not many people can actually make it sound good, so this is a rare sound indeed.

  • @type3secretion yes ur right. vibrating off another strings harmony and when its that lose it will rattle like crazy

  • @type3secretion Exactly what it is. He's hitting the low (I think he tuned it to C) string hard and it is vibrating against the frets.

  • @type3secretion Yeah, it's fretbuzz alright.

  • @type3secretion Correct!

  • Comment removed

  • @type3secretion That's exactly right...the 6th string is tuned two full steps lower than standard tuning, and if you get even a little carried away (as he does here), it will buzz a little.

  • @type3secretion you're right, it's just hit harder so that it vibrates against the fretboard.

  • @type3secretion

almost sounds like he strikes the string with middle finger, then the string vibrates against his thumb. I say this because if it was a vibration from the string being loose, or tuned down, the sound would still resonate like @ 6:30, that's definitely a hammer on and pull off

  • @type3secretion That's pretty much spot on - tuned down to C so that's quite low and the string will get a bit flabby.

  • @type3secretion When you hit a guitar's strings with force, they vibrate against the wood of the fretboard and make a kind of rattling sound. Does that help?

  • @type3secretion Yep, exactly! The high E string is tuned down to C, that is two steps down, making it very loose, and so, when he pulls it more aggressively and closer to the fret board and not the hole, it vibrates like that. Cool, eh ;)

  • @type3secretion it's because of the CGDGBC tuning. Much lower bass string and much lower melody string

  • @Cavin8r bass string yes ...but vibrating against the frets I would think

  • Carina, thanks so much for the site. I am a classical guitarist who has always loved Michael's playing. Do you have any other leads. I really appreciate it!

  • Where can i find Michael Hedges sheet music... no tabs!

    ?

    Please help.

  • @moellermusic1 You can find some stuff on tab sites like Ultimate Guitar, but the best transcriptions come from Stropes.com. I recommend Rhythm, Sonority, and Silence as it includes this song. It also has nice descriptions of technique and offers insight into Michael's compositions. These transcriptions include both tab and sheet music.

  • In Chico, I think 1988 maybe, I saw Michael at the auditorium. There were whole minutes where I forgot to breathe. When I did it came with tears and my heart pounding. I played Guitar since 1968 and could see these pieces as what they were ... the work of a mind so rare as to be like Jesus in his simplicity yet like Bach in his musical gift. May the future somehow hold a reunion for us all. May he play forever in our hearts.

  • eausathriftstore@verizon.net

  • My father in law was a friend of the Admiral and I've heard many stories about him. From what I've heard. This nails him exactly. Clicking away with precision and exactitude and when every so often the reality of humanity creeps in, he responds with an angry minor chord to set things back into his own predictable hard rhythm once again.

  • 4:30...Incredible!!! The king of harmonics.

  • i miss micheal. what a great artist

  • THE man ... no question.

  • I bet he LOVED the martin tuners, they're so fast and accurate.

  • He was probably more accurate himself though!

  • @jazzpsalti Did he have a on board tuner?, cause i thought he always tuned by ear

  • hehe, no I mean old martin guitars from about 1965-1975 had these really fast tuning keys... half a turn gets you two whole steps

  • people talk about guys like andy mckee and justin king, undoubtedly they're great but they would'nt exist if it weren't michael

  • yup :)

  • Michael is the father of modern fingerstyle guitar, no question.

  • I am a huge fan of Michael but as for fingerstyle guitar maybe Leo Kottke came first....

  • depends on what you mean; temporally, granted; technique - debatable. Kottke could do things better than Hedges (as could others, some better than Kottke), but Hedges could do things Kottke couldn't; and creativity, that is subjective, but IMO, Hedges is a singularly bright star.

  • @eastonmackay this guys don't even come close to be Hedges

best guitar player and composer IMO

  • great.

    thanx for up this video.

i saw his guitar play 17years ago.

    it was so great....

  • Yes, I can also say musical grandmaster. :P

  • This piece was on a Windham Hill album I bought back in the late 80's. It has long been one of my favorites.

I am saddened to hear of his passing, he was a superb artist.

  • the guy was great.. the tuning of the guitar itself is somwhat of a composition :P

  • haha so true. theres a comment some few pages back that says hed rather listen to hedges tune than anything on the radio these days

  • Great song, he is the greatest

  • could anybody tell me what the numbers in the tuning in the description mean? thanx

  • Yes,The number denotes which octave. The best way is to think how it relates to the piano. There are several "C"'s on the keyboard. The lowest one starts with on lowest number and they go up from there....C1, C2, C3, C4...etc...each one designates an octave...Does this help?

  • so dude basicly download AP tuner for pc and untune your guitar completely into drop c..then youll see that there are many same notes but with different numbers

  • that thing at 4:30 is probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen him do

  • Truely amazing......What a loss....M.H. IS music, and there will be no one like him ever.....

  • I'd rather listen to Hedges tune his guitar than listen to anything that comes on the radio these days.

  • *dies laughing* Thank you for making my day - that was an excellent comment.

  • rofl - so true! sooo so true

  • @Aetherius88 right on

  • @Aetherius88 amen

  • Musician? What musician? I don't see a musician, all I see is god

    :)

  • If this man is god, I'm no longer atheist.

  • A friend of mine turned me on to Hedges after he saw him open for Crosby, Stills, and Nash. His cd "Taproot" rarely left my changer after that. It's too bad that visionaries like him are often taken too soon.

  • As the last poster said. I cannot imagine someone sounding that good just tuning.

  • shoot, even him just tuning up the guitar sounds great. Rickover's Dream is an amazing song.

  • He really gave it his all on every performance!

  • I miss seeing him live... it was the most amazing, transcendent experience...

  • Does anyone know what his hairstyle is called (if it even has a name ;))

  • I'm pretty sure it's just really grown out dreadlocks

  • nah I would call those braids...just thick braids

  • I would call those braids, they look like it

  • That would be a Jesus Marley do.

  • Even though I'm familiar with fingerstyle guitar music and even attempt to make my own tunes, and try to make it sound like several instruments playing at once, and even though I've seen so many videos of Hedges, and Don Ross and all my other favorite guitarists playing all these songs and sounding like a band, it still amazes me hearing this song now and watching this that all that sound is coming out of a single guitar, not 3! Especially the part following the intro, at 1:42. Just amazing.

  • Did you record these live shows yourself, Type3?

  • Oh no! I've gathered these from various places, but had no hand in any of the recordings. I've seen him live three times, but was too young and unforesighted to tape anything.

  • Its nice to find great music time to time

  • im right up there with u my friend :)

  • Wow

    Brilliant!

    never heard play before

  • This guy was great, takes me back to the eighties with all the Windham Hill artist, too bad he's gone:(

  • Man I just love the way he tunes his guitar before each song. I would've bought a ticket just to watch him tune his guitar!

  • I picture him playing by the pearly gates welcoming people into heaven

  • On the topic of Michael's death. He probably was not killed instanyl and had some time to contemplate life. I'm sure he was at peace with himself. Not enough people know or appreciate what this man left behind.

  • I didn't know he was gone, what happened?

  • He was driving home and he had old tires on his 9-year old BMW and lost control in rainy weather, vaulted over a cliff and fell about 120 feet to his death. He was found a few days later. It was later determined he was killed instantly or nearly instantly. Sad.

  • Thankyou for the information on his death. He had real talent. Although I hadn't heard his music until I bacame a youtube member, I feel for all of you that were fans of his. I guess I feel the same way about John Denver's passing. Thanks again.

  • Try joining youtube, finding these videos. Being inspired to play. Going to watch Andy Mckee live. Then Don Ross live. Then Tommy Emmanuel. THen Erik Mongrain. Then planning to watch Michael Hedges and finding out the guy was dead! It was a bitter pill to swallow indeed.

  • God I miss this guy. The world is a lot less cool without him in it. Ridiculously talented...my heart still hurts. The most inspirational player and person I've ever met. He was a great guy...I saw him in Napa at the Mondavi Winery and he brought his little girl on stage for her birthday.

  • EPIC TO THE MAXIMUM EXTREAME!

  • He's now playing in the Kingdom of God

  • He IS God :D

  • we need to say this a lot more... he was fucking brilliant!

  • lol this video quality is funny

  • I can't for the life of me figure out how he makes the high c4(bottom sting)ring open while hammering/pulling the other stings above during the intro. Plus about 100 other things he does! I saw him perform probably 6 times in the day and forgot what a FORCE he was. I'm hooked...again...Thanks August Rush!

  • wow i've never seen anything like this. amazing.

  • REAL MUSIC :)

  • ARTIST

  • Michael, sei stato e sarai sempre una fonte di ispirazione per tutti noi. La tua musica è semplicemente fantastica, quanto di più vicino al divino ci sia capitato di ascoltare. Grazie. RIP.

  • Truly awe-inspring. I'm convinced Hedges invented his playing style out of necessity. He needed to in order to get the music out. Watching this is like watching someone teeming with creativity; about to burst. One of the greats. RIP Michael Hedges

  • The world is a poorer place without Michael Hedges in it. Simply stunning.

  • it actually even sounds amazing when he's tuning his guitar :p

  • Absolutely! I thought exactly the same thing!

  • I learned how to play this song and it was by far the most challenging. Nobody could play music like him. Michael Hedges in my opinion is the greatest guitar player who ever lived and he will be missed by everyone.

  • I've seen him four times here in Toronto Canada and I'll never be mezmerized again like I was at his concert's thank u michael

I guess your playing for a bigger audience know

  • thankyou michael. Miss you.

His guitar playing will blow people away for thousands of years.

  • missing you from all over the world, Michael!

  • infuriating that the most talented go early - really - where do i send my complaint - the most innovative, expressive, and humble virtuosa guitarist the world has seen.

  • This blows away the album version. Holy shit.

  • no comparison, maestro bluerickblues, your an idiot...Hedges wrote all his stuff, and Naudo is good, but he plays most his stuff down in the lower part of the guitar, which is quite simple...hammer ons and pull offs and Hedges technique is quite spectacular...Hedges "Not good"??? jesus...get a life

  • I think they are both excellent at what they are doing. Naudo's style reminds me of classical/ flamenco which has a awesome sound. he is also doing covers which by that means you have something to compare to. Hedge's is very original, all I can say is that I dig.

  • shit

    hedges is number 1

  • sparkanius ur an idiot if u think this is fake!! this guy was a musical genuis

  • He was the best and he was playing his best for us.

  • If u need help to play this song, I can help guys... I just know it by heart... Never the way he used to play, he had God in his hands... but I can give you practicing and playing hints.

    Dona

  • the tuning of the song is (low to high) CGDGBE. Basically tune your low E to C and tune your A string down a step to G.

  • CGDGBC

  • m hedges a de grassi 2 guitarist i love acoustic and smooth hedges played with alot of feeling i never saw him live but even on cd he was and is a bad!@#!%%Qer

  • Indieguitarist85 would you like the tuning's first?

  • hedges is crazily amazing!

Im trying to learn how to play this just by watching him!!

    how does he do it???

    I need help!!

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • Clearly the most creative acoustic artist ever to hit the planet. RIP michael, you are missed dearly by every fan youve ever had.

  • wait the guys dead? damn.
