I don't listen to the entire protomen story much, but this is still one of my favorites from their collection. If I had to pick a song that could stand on its own, this would be one of my choices. :)
They blew the roof off of PAX East this year. Wish I had seen them last year as well. Absolutely amazing show.
Love this song so much. It's become something of my anthem for life right now. Wanting to get out of the life I'm stuck in and go onto something better that makes me feel more alive. Just that one line alone 'Sometimes I just wanna drive until the streets run out, I wanna burn until there's nothing left to burn about' hits me every time. That line describes exactly how I feel.
@Teigue82 I'm with you with the amazing show. PAX in general was amazing and they were the perfect 1st show just set the pace " I'm so tired of giving up, I am so tired of giving in. You wake up knowing things have changed, Not knowing where to begin. This city won't say where she's going, She won't speak of where she's been. " favorite part of the song hits me everytime
@gnomes2169 Intermission, The Good Doctor, Father of Death, The Hounds, The State vs. Thomas Light, Give Us the Rope, How the World Fell under Darkness, Breaking Out, Keep Quiet, Light Up the Night, The Fall (Joe u.u /tear), Here Comes the Arm.
@HHSMarchingIndian True, but also Joe explains something in the games. The enemy "Sniper Joe" is apparently based off of Joe in terms of events chronologically in the story but the Sniper Joe of the games clearly came before the Protoman's Joe.
Just keep in mind this is all just a spin on the classic Megaman story. I don't remember Light being so cynical of everything, and I don't remember Protoman being a leader of Wily's forces.
@xxDoesitmatterxx Light isn't cynical, Wily sings in alot of the songs in Act 2. What happens is Light and Wily create robots, Light's motivation is that they can handle dangerous jobs since his father died in the mines(The Good Doctor) Light realizes the machines are putting too many workers out of jobs but Wily continues, eventually using the robots to put the city under martial law. As for Protoman ever being on Wiley's forces his position was pretty ambiguous since Megaman 3.
@lamuerteviva You should look up the lyrics for all the songs to see where it fits in, I guess. Act I is more concerned with robots killing each other ( I prefer Act I actually hahaha), so if you want megaman, and not the events leading up it, listen to that. :"D
@UntrustworthyRainbow In terms of the story telling aspect, I think I liked Act II a little bit better, but Act 1's music definitively was better, although this album did have some pretty good songs too.
They take certain characters and thematic elements from the Megaman games, but also take a lot of creative liberties in altering the main story. The result is an deeply emotional two album rock opera that is easily one of my favorite pieces of music and favorite stories. There are synopsis and lyrics online. Check them out.
This song has Joe, who later becomes Sniper Joe (creative liberty. they make him a good guy) finally deciding to stand up to Wily's fear powered reign.
@lamuerteviva Protomen's albums are set in a megaman based universe. Act I concerns the creation of protoman and megaman and their fights against Dr. Wiley. Act II is a prequel describing the origin of Wiley's robots and how man fell under his domination. By the time of "Breaking Out" Dr. Wiley has control of the city through the creation of a climate of fear and powerlessness. Joe, the main voice in the song, feels the wrongness of the city and wants to fight against it, or escape it.
@killerkirbydude Those are unplayably horrid, so I wouldn't know about that, but the NES Mega Man 3 refers to Wily as Wiley. I expect other NES games did too - Mega Man 6 uses the non-word "faild" - but this I remember.
I just find it comical to see someone correcting someone else with such a superior tone when *Capcom* faild Megaman 101.
@nitendubsinc Not quite. If you look at the liner notes for the record, it explains that the song introduces a character named Joe, a teenager/young man who grew up in the city where the story is set after it was taken over by Doctor Wily. He's angry and dissatisfied, and rides off on his motorcycle into the bad parts of town, hoping to find a way to make a change. It makes a bit more sense if you read the notes -- they have a ton of "stage direction."
@lamuerteviva The album in general is about Dr. Light and Dr. Wily, this song in particular is sung by a character named Joe which is a reference to the enemy Sniper Joe.
@lamuerteviva The songs that you hear isn't all to the story. These songs put together add up into an entire story. Google The Protomen Lyrics Wiki and that is the place you want to be if you want to read them all. I recommend listening to them all in order, imo starting with the second act. Part II is sort of a prequel to the first. The first is about Megaman and his journey to avenge Protomen, while the second is about Dr. Light's first completion with Wily and being betrayed. Read them all.
I figured, there's an interlude & it's listed as Act 2 so they probably want us to listen to them in that order, so it sounds really good that way.
Also on the Wiki is the story from the pamphlet that you get from the CD when you purchase it, which has all of the actual story elements written out in between the lyrics.
"This city's waiting for a better day, when I get back there will be hell to pay! But, if I'm the only one left standing, I will not be afraid to fight!"
The only problem I have with this album is that Joe sounds a bit too much like Light, who is probably much older than Joe, because for me, when I first heard of Joe before listening to the album, I pictured a more younger man with a young man voice. Not to say men in their 20's or 30's can't sound like how Joe sounds, but in my opinion, I was expecting a different voice. But really that's just a small detail and I can still fully enjoy the album, so all is well.
@tigerstripes97 Maybe that was what they were going for? Maybe they wanted Joe to sound like a more primitive, but more passionate version of Dr. Light.
There is moments when I just want to go out of the city and get some peace. When I found a place out of the city and listened to this song, was so fucking amazing.
BTW, For some reason, I think that is the reason of that red-eyed robots with a shield and a gun in Megaman games are called Sniper Joe, for the next events in the next songs (The Fall).
As a fan of The Protomen and someone who wants to leave the city for multiple reasons, I was really able to immerse myself into this song last night. Where, in NYC, I was just staring at the skyline, seeing lights illuminate layers of the sky. Was amazing.

Bands hardly make any money from CD sales. All their real money comes from merchandise and live shows. Pirating helps a band get known by more people, who in turn will buy merch and see them live.
Sir the argument is not over how much they make but if they do make anything at all. I side with the idea that people can get the free stuff but only if they pay for stuff too (and it should be a significant amount) This argument is controversial and people typically side with whichever side is more convenient to them. I am no exception. We are both right we are both wrong. We both have valid points. In the end the individual must decide what they believe is right and wrong.
@lobsopdoy Hahahahaha I said the exact same thing on another Protomen page. I second your indignation! The articulate and helpful nature of these comments offend the nature of what Youtube stands for!
@CobaltIsNotReal That's not true, man. Protomen aren't on a big label so pretty much all of the money they get from the CDs goes right back to them. CDs *aren't* expensive to make, they literally cost less than $1 a CD if you get a large enough run.
I've got the exact problem as you. I, too, am in Ireland. I have searched every damn music store in the entire county of Cork....not a single Protomen CD, only all that mainstream crap.
How about everyone stop bitching about pirating the damn CD's, I know that their a small band and all, but really. Come on? Get over it. People Pirate music from small time bands. It sucks, yeah, but shut up and move on.
When you accept an evil you are just as bad as it is. True, bitching about it on a random video chat board won't help change anything but we should never accept theft simply because it happens.
Not cool dude. I wont get on you about pirating music, but actually but the CD from an Indy artist, because unlike signed artists, one less sale is a big deal for them.
Yeah, but after listening to this, I'll buy the CD, in all probability. A little more publicity begets more sales, so it's kind of good for indie artists.
and that's all fine and dandy, I was directing that at the people who wont buy it because they can pirate it. Indy artists need the support. Beside that, yes a place like You Tube or Imeem is great publicity.
It's not $15. It's $10. Buy it along with Act I and the total is $20. It's even cheaper on iTunes if you really don't care about the booklet. I do recommend the full CD, though. It's unbelievable well crafted.
I bought both cds, and both "album" shirts. and a poster. and when the father of death was first demo'd I got the vinal and poster ;D I love these guys!
You thankless jackass, 15 is nothing for amazing music like this. These musicians aren't rich or famous. They don't make this music for the money, unlike the countless popular bands out there. They do it because they love to and especially because they love Megaman.
The least you can do is to support these noble indie artists, as they put out quality instead of the constant clones of soul-less crap made by the industry.
You can't. Very few stores have it, I think The Protomen's blog has a few stores, otherwise you have to buy it from Zambooie, I'd highly recommend the CD version over the MP3 version.
whos to say we dont just want to embed them on our myspace.....i used to have the state vs thomas light on my page but the douche took it down for some reason...so UR, upload it so i can take it...like i took the cd...
But Sniper Robot Helmet + Joe = Sniper Joe! Just like those ridiculous pairing codenames that make you wanna stab yourself in the eye! I know it's true because of my maths. *nod*
Not the robot Sniper Joe, no, but that is the one that stalks our Joe to the outskirts. And it can't be coincidence that Joe dons the fallen bot's helmet. The naming was intentional.

Mirithonomy 2 years ago
Looking upon your previous posts, they do seem to have more thought put into them then then usual trap.
Thank you for breaking the trend.

@TheCritRocket Any time. I do enjoy a good discussion.

What the hell kind of Youtube comment is this? Where's the misspelling and exclamation marks and random hyperbole?!
lobsopdoy 2 years ago 76
Sturgeon's Law. 90% of everything is Crap. These comments are part of the 10%.

Where's the...exclamation marks?!
>!
Come on, now. We were so close.
TheCritRocket 1 year ago
@lobsopdoy You added an exclamation mark to your hyperbole. ._.

@lobsopdoy I srsly lstend to this sng halv a milion time!!@$!#@$^&
Kaokidx10 1 year ago
@lobsopdoy Hahahahaha I said the exact same thing on another Protomen page. I second your indignation! The articulate and helpful nature of these comments offend the nature of what Youtube stands for!
leaveschangeincolor 1 year ago
@CobaltIsNotReal That's not true, man. Protomen aren't on a big label so pretty much all of the money they get from the CDs goes right back to them. CDs *aren't* expensive to make, they literally cost less than $1 a CD if you get a large enough run.
Onslaughttitude 1 year ago
I would like to mention that this song really reminds me of Meatloaf.....most especially "I Would do Anything for Love".
....This is an excellent excellent song, different from the usual Protomen stuff.
DorianCTB 2 years ago 2
@DorianCTB Oddly enough, I was thinking "bat out of Hell".
punkaksyoo 2 years ago 2
That comparison would work just as well, now that I think about it.
DorianCTB 2 years ago
I've got the exact problem as you. I, too, am in Ireland. I have searched every damn music store in the entire county of Cork....not a single Protomen CD, only all that mainstream crap.
DorianCTB 2 years ago 2
does Joe or Light sing this part?
tavila 2 years ago 7
Joe.

@everyone arguing over pirating:
STFU. Enjoy the music.
Seishintsuki 2 years ago 3
I looked all over for this CD. =/
I assume e-buying it might work better
Pladicus 2 years ago 2
perhaps buying it off the protomen website? I did that. and got some awesome merch too :D The movie poster is kick ass!
Awesomeness12344 2 years ago 4
How about everyone stop bitching about pirating the damn CD's, I know that their a small band and all, but really. Come on? Get over it. People Pirate music from small time bands. It sucks, yeah, but shut up and move on.
Fuck.
PitchBlackSunrise 2 years ago 8
When you accept an evil you are just as bad as it is. True, bitching about it on a random video chat board won't help change anything but we should never accept theft simply because it happens.
Mirithonomy 2 years ago
man i so want a movie like the wall to go with this
tavila 2 years ago 10
Not cool dude. I wont get on you about pirating music, but actually but the CD from an Indy artist, because unlike signed artists, one less sale is a big deal for them.
Silverhairedlionking 2 years ago 3
Yeah, but after listening to this, I'll buy the CD, in all probability. A little more publicity begets more sales, so it's kind of good for indie artists.
KomradeKiwi 2 years ago 4
and that's all fine and dandy, I was directing that at the people who wont buy it because they can pirate it. Indy artists need the support. Beside that, yes a place like You Tube or Imeem is great publicity.
Silverhairedlionking 2 years ago
I love the Piano in the beginning.
Silverhairedlionking 2 years ago
It's not $15. It's $10. Buy it along with Act I and the total is $20. It's even cheaper on iTunes if you really don't care about the booklet. I do recommend the full CD, though. It's unbelievable well crafted.
goldraine 2 years ago
I bought both cds, and both "album" shirts. and a poster. and when the father of death was first demo'd I got the vinal and poster ;D I love these guys!
YOKappaKappa 2 years ago
Do you know where I could buy the cd?
sonicfan123456 2 years ago
nvm.
sonicfan123456 2 years ago
I got one: The Liner Notes. That booklet is epic.
ShamanicEnzan 2 years ago
You thankless jackass, 15 is nothing for amazing music like this. These musicians aren't rich or famous. They don't make this music for the money, unlike the countless popular bands out there. They do it because they love to and especially because they love Megaman.
The least you can do is to support these noble indie artists, as they put out quality instead of the constant clones of soul-less crap made by the industry.
Bigbosscoffee 2 years ago 4
Where can i get the CD's apart from the internets?
BlackKnightIND20 2 years ago
You can't. Very few stores have it, I think The Protomen's blog has a few stores, otherwise you have to buy it from Zambooie, I'd highly recommend the CD version over the MP3 version.
ShamanicEnzan 2 years ago
Thanks buddy
BlackKnightIND20 2 years ago
No problem
ShamanicEnzan 2 years ago
Have you noticed that a few chimes of Elecman's song from MM1 appear in this song? I'm thinking of buying the album...

This song was amazing at the cd release party.
6 hour drive well worth it

offdahook376 2 years ago
Why do you say that? Even though you havent uploaded them doesnt mean you lie.
Just means you couldnt.
(Though Im glad you didnt. People need to just fork over the 15$ dollars for the CD and SUPPORT The Protomen!)
Lirah117 2 years ago
whos to say we dont just want to embed them on our myspace.....i used to have the state vs thomas light on my page but the douche took it down for some reason...so UR, upload it so i can take it...like i took the cd...

Also, the person singing in this song isn't light, it's a guy named Joe. (NOT SNIPER JOE.)
dodedoodee 2 years ago
Wellll, after he puts the helmet on from the sniper robot, then can he be Sniper Joe? :D
avroillusion 2 years ago
LOL good one. Nice coincidence that they both are named Joe.
dodedoodee 2 years ago
but he never "snipes" anyone...
TheLanceChannel 2 years ago
But Sniper Robot Helmet + Joe = Sniper Joe! Just like those ridiculous pairing codenames that make you wanna stab yourself in the eye! I know it's true because of my maths. *nod*
avroillusion 2 years ago
Fuck yeah!!!
ltgreatsocks 2 years ago
Not the robot Sniper Joe, no, but that is the one that stalks our Joe to the outskirts. And it can't be coincidence that Joe dons the fallen bot's helmet. The naming was intentional.
KLNDR 2 years ago 3
I can send you the story parts from the booklet, if you'd like.
