Is this song beautiful or what? Oh man this album is so good I rank it in my top 5 of all time..I have it on vinyl 1st pressing mint condish...my top 5: Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, Frampton Comes Alive, Pet Sounds, Rubber Soul..and Boy!
say what you will about any of their other output, this album was a pure expression of their youth, before Bono put on his Fly sunglasses and they sold out stadiums. makes me kind of wistful for the past.
I still find this album inspirational 31 years later, if somebody did it now it would be considered 'groundbreaking'. I'm not against U2 these days but have been bored by them for a long time now, I guess we all get older though and those teenage, fertile ground years are a long time ago for me and for them. Into the heart of a child I go again...
@whisky110 ...yup..you...hit it on the head...i mean this album is great...u2 could do sesame street covers for the rest of their lives and be cool after this album it is so awesome...
I wish they could compose darker themed music like this.
Im sick of being "uplifted", made "happy" and fucking "inspired"
U2 made their reputation in that dark post punk milieu- go back to it guys it was a rich fertile field called reality, at least it was real. All this high art bullshit, hanging out with Eno etc etc is bullshit. I dont live in the world of the newer, plastic over produced dribble of late - this is the real U2
@euqsabtnatillim ive never heard anything more retarded in my life!!! I will FOLLOW and OUT OF CONTROL are amazing songs from boy, that are quite uplifting, rejoice is a good uplifting song, and so is 40! all uplifting songs, before biran eno, and lanois even worked iwth U2, so you obviously arent a U2 fan, cause you dont know squat about them and their songs! almost every song by U2 is uplifiting, i never feel depressed when listening to U2.
@ZebZachary I think it wasn't a REEEEAL concept album, but it has a theme. The theme of growing up. Suficiently to leave the childhood and adolscence, but not to be considered an adult. It's about looking forward with fears and hopes and miss the past, with all the happiness and warm. You can say it's an album about all the band's doubts while growing and maturing, but ready to face it.
U2 eventually became SO huge that most people probably don't realize what an experience it was to hear this stuff when it was new; when U2 was still undiscovered and "underground". When you think about where this was coming from, and what was happening in the mainstream at the time, it's completely original and quite ingenious. They were a big part of a new movement that redefined pop music.
@longfade It does certainly sound unique as if they had no influences at the time, but when I started listening to the Buzzcocks I started hearing a lot of U2 Boy in that sound. As a musician, that discovery was a bit of a relief, that they were in fact like most young musicians, reflecting their influences. Television also comes to mind. But they certainly did not have mainstream influences in their sound.
the genius of U2 is....if you listen to this song, then something like "the fly" or "running to stand still" you get totally different experiences...how many bands can make music that transcends so many different genres and STILL matter? This album and October are AMAZING I love this era in U2's history...sounds like nothing else...
war album vinyl- back catalogued october and boy (failed to get my hands on u23) but after unforgettable fire the magic had pretty much faded for me-still look on this period of u2 as a blueprint for my musical tastes-
freakin a "haunting" intro..incredible ...then it gets all soothing...i listened to this album on shrooms in the early 80's in the dark several times!

This was the time U2 still had something to 'express' it was an interesting time..
they should have stopped in the late 90's; it seems they solely play for the attention lately.

i love how the songs fade into each other ....
actually, there's a sort of surreal flow to this whole album. (IMO)
ya...gotta be my Fav album from U2. and....perhaps their best.
it's almost like a concept album.....although, i couldn't say exactly
what the concept was !
Steve Lillywhite certainly is to be commended on this album....
just as much as the band itself.

When the fact is, you/we are old.
F**k!! Or just, sometimes, we feel old. Specially when we listen old tunes, like this one, the best one.
It's just on a paper, not in our minds.
Cheers.
