Often it is simply the case of the mureed kissing the feet of the murshid. This is a good gesture of respect and is not the same as doing sajda.
I have also heard of 'sajdah of respect' (such as the angels doing sajda to Adam (AS)). This would normally be Haram as it is not allowed to prostrate before anybody other than Allah but NOT shirk i.e. it is a sin but does not take one out of the fold of Islam.

I personally know a brother who was with the Naqshabandis in MI. He was with them for 3 years and they never taught him how to make salaat, and they didn't go to Juma prayer, they only went to dhikr circles. He said that in a circle, Kabbani cut off a piece of his robe and told him to "focus on this when you make your dhikr, it will bring you closer to Allah". They also took $10,000 from his visa card, that's when he finally decided to leave them. It is so sad, they are deceiving sincere people.
The prophet (may Allaah's peace and blessings be upon him) said : "Do not clap, for this is for the women". If these people love the prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so much then why are they not listening to him concerning clapping of the hands !!!

Besides Tashawuf (Sufism) is none other than the Heart, no, the Rooh, of Islaam. Ta = Tauhid (whose first gate is Taubah), Sha = Shafa, Wa = Walayah, Fa = Fanaa'. It's first state, Tauhid (through Taubah), is also its last state, Tauhid (in the most perfect sense). Whosoever ignores this great Science ignores the whole Deen of Islaam. Allaahu Akbar. Salla Allaahu alaa Sayyidina wa Mawlana wa Habibina wa Nurul Mawjudina Muhammadin wa alaa alihi wa sahbihi ajma'in.

For Exoteric Muslims to understand Sufis, it is best to be guided by the Mujaddid Al Ghazali's book..."The Revival of the Religions Sciences" (Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din)

To be a Sufi is no easy matter... One has to master the exoteric aspect of Islam before delving into the Path.. or as the Sufis call it.. Adh-Dhareeqa! They've a dictum for that... La Dhareeqa bila Sharica!!! So U must first become well versed in the Sharia.. before attempting Sufism.
And to do that U need a GUIDE... or a Shaikh...A bona fide Shaikh and not a charlatan.
