About 120 hours of painting. The Tiger is more stylized and less detailed than some of my more recent paintings. The Grizzly Bears for instance took over 400 hours to complete!
this is incredible. you are a master. it would be fantastic if one day you could perhaps do a video showing how you create. like more in depth just explaining how this can come about from such humble beginnings! thanks for sharing, truly wonderful stuff!
I appreciate the comment! That is the idea; to capture a moment in time with paint, much like taking a photo but with an added level of interpretation/artistic licence.
not that difficult if u have the feel for it, should try out on painting paper and start out on that, cuz if u mess up on the canvis, u cant fix it plus canvises are expensive so even worse to mess up on them

Bravo ! Bravo ! Thanks, I'll add this to my fav's . I just started painting last Summer (acrylic) and love it . I too have a Bengal paining 3 by 4 Ft , check it out . I also do the time lapse , love flicking through the digital images real fast on the camera ,it's like MAGIC ! My TIGER was my first sale BTW . Best to you , Steve Smith
Very nice "Eye of Tiger" painting! That is huge. It's funny that we have the same name, painted the same animal with the same medium on the same size canvas, made a time lapse of its progress and posted them on this site :) I enjoyed looking at your work, you have done a lot of it! Very cool.
Damn. If this is acrylic on canvas...shit. That is friggin awesome. I wish I could paint like that. How long did it take you to do all this? Did you do it all continously? And for acrylic on canvas, I still need to prime the surface right?
Hey, thanks! I'm not a fast painter; it took me around 120 hours over about 6 weeks to paint the tiger. It is 3x4 feet in size. I make my own prints with a big old 44" wide-format Epson 9500 printer, which I feel justifies spending the time on my originals. I make prints using archival quality pigmented inks, directly on canvas. Once you stretch the canvas on a wooden frame, the prints look very similar to the originals - and will last just as long.
Most canvases come primed, but I always use two or three coats of acrylic gesso before I start painting (sand lightly with very fine auto-body sandpaper between coats for a smoother texture.) If you think you might want your work to endure the sands of time, use quality paints and the matching brand of gesso primer. Golden, M Graham, and Liquitex Artists' colors are all good brands and may be mixed with one another.
Woah thanks mate. Really helps. I also would like to know the processing steps, just briefly would be good. I have trouble starting off a painting, and adding which colour to use. Thanks :)
dkxodnr, I'm glad I could help! Take a look at my other videos to see the exact steps I take to do a painting. Pre-mix a few of the most prevalent colors in the background of the image you are painting, and build it up by getting closer to the form/color of the photo. Get a variety of paint colors so that you don't have to do as much mixing, and look up basic color theory if you need help mixing the right colors.
Tips for you: Find a photo or photos that are effective on their own. Mark out a few key reference points (using ratios or a grid or by eye) on the canvas to help you with proportions. Do a rough sketch in pencil or with a drawing pen before you start, and/or as you paint.
Start by painting "simplified approximations" of the shapes & colours of the picture elements furthest in the background and work forward, building on what you have painted. When working with acrylics, focus your attention more toward getting the paint in the right place at first, and go over it later to get the colors closer to the reference image.
When you have the main form completed, start mixing unique colors for the top layer that do not come directly from the tubes. This will add interest and a more 'natural' look to your work. Practice with a small canvas and a simple but effective reference image such as a sunset with silhouetted trees. I use Golden artist's acrylic paints almost exclusively, they are exceptionally good quality.
great work man,i'm an artist as well,& i know the time n skill it takes to paint something with this quality & attention to detail,i'm the perfectionist tipe artist(wich i assume u r to)& i really enjoy seeing a piece done right, with superb artistry skils,& with a result as good as mine(regardless of what is being designed, built or painted)
