  • I highly recommend this marvellous production. Look, times have changed and there's more than one way to illustrate the story. (You know that if you've looked at a children's book in the last thirty years.) H&G are wonderfully played as children. They live in an instantly recognizable modern urban poverty. Angels don't fly down to them as they lay in an inert heap on stage. Rather, they actively dream a fantastic banquet, and we enter their dream! To me that has a magic of its own.

  • @GregOpera this is one of the most intelligent modern interpretations of this opera... you, Greg, are tired.

  • Find the old Met production of 1982 with Judith Blegan and Frederika von Stade. The best. Only drawback is that it's in English, but not a fatal one.

  • why do so many people not like this??

  • fucking video shit . !

  • This is ghastly. What next, a production set in Auschwitz?

  • Das hat mir gefallen.

  • Huh, in English?! (0_o)

  • @cabal0092009 its called evolving!!!

  • i will have a chance to be one of the children when they put this on in the spring in austin :)

  • OMG. Thank you for putting this up. I was in this! At about 0:08 you can see me in the dark brown dress running in the front and at 1:07 I'm the tallest girl in the back

  • it's put on as the children-friendly show at the Met. That's why it's in English. It's meant to be a family show for the holidays :)

  • how did they make the mum and dad bigger than hansel and gretel

  • they didn't - just look at christine schäfer in other vids and you'll see that apart from beeing a wonderful singer, she's tiny. so all they had to do was find a mezzo and a baritone bigger than the "kids"

btw, i think it's a wonderful production (from what i can say from the few snippets i saw here on youtube)

  • Gosh, I love this show. Every version, but this was my first - and by far the best produced of all of them.

I don't mind the English. It's a fun translation, and the voices are amazing, anyway. (which is what counts in my book).

  • This burnt body is disgusting... phew....

  • @palcika1 : I know you posted this a year ago, but that is exactly what I was thinking... I really loved the voices and the procuction, but my goodness! Were they implying that they were going to eat her crispy burnt body??? Ugghhh!!!

  • @dojusticelovemercy

Listen to the singers and you'll hear that she's baked into a loaf of bread (some translations say gingerbread, pretty much all involve her in a cake or bread, and I'm sure all involve her being eaten). The real fairy tale is no less morbid than this.

  • Wonderful singing and great energy---Held, a fine actor, has that kind of big baritone voice that is rare to here these days.

As for those who don't like it in English---this was billed for families at The Met during the holiday season. It was nice for it to be in English for the kids---and you can understand the diction here as well.

And when a show that is written in English is done in Germany, often times it is sung in German---especially musicals.

  • The worst production I ever had seen of such a beautiful work!

  • i do not like this production too. But there are even worst production at german opera houses. EUROTRASH!!!!

  • My daughter and I love the translation, we love Christine and Alice, we love the witch, we love the cannibalism bit, we love the children's chorus.

Please, oh please can we have more? The sandman and the dewman, the Abendsegen, the angels?

Psst..this DVD is definitely going to be under the Christman tree

  • This is so funny. I love how funny the lyrics of an opera can be. "See the witch bewitched for good. Burnt to crisp, she's ditched for good."

  • An awful production!

  • i agree. i liked it in german.

what happened to "shout o shout das vunderan, vie die hexen hexen kann"

  • I adored this scene! Thanks so much for putting up!
