Technically a superb modern performance but listen to the Karajan version of 1972 on DG and you feel you are there in front of Cologne Cathedral. The playing by the Berlin Phiharmoniker has never been surpassed.
I agree, the orchestra is fantastic (what else is new), but I am not sold on Mr. Boder's ideas...I have to say that the recordings Levine, Karajan, and Tennstedt made with Berlin are better conducted. I would like to see Haitink, Levine (he should come back) or Rattle do all the Schumann for the DCH. The conducting in my view is good but not great...the orchestra as usual is wonderful.
Great playing....but the conducting is ok...there are better Schumann conductors..but playing wise...I agree. I like this performance...and Mr. Boder does a good job...but not sure his conducting is great in the true sense.

First time I heard this was on James Levine's and Berlin Phil's recording. Such power and emotion Schumann brings out.

Do any of the other trombone geeks know why Stefan Schultz is not playing in any of the videos Berlin Phil posts?

My only complaint is that they never play the whole piece. *sigh*

That is because it is a teaser, and you are supposed to pay for the whole performance. Don't you think it's worth it? I certainly do. =)
