among the most moving voices I've had the pleasure of hearing.nothing definable, no one thing, just a sense of brotherhood and the desire to put my arm around whoever is next to me while its playing.
One of the only artists I've found whose voice is so robust & versatile, it upstages the guitar chops threefold. His voice can go from grit to gravy in the same bar. Listening is like having your heartstrings pulled tight than used like jumprope
This is my favourite of Dave Van Ronk's. A highlight was being able to tell him so at the Winnipeg Folk Festival a number of years ago. After listening to his powerful and wonderful music for so many years and to finally meet him. Such a wonderful musician and human being...and so missed.
I've been playing 'Tell Old Bill' for about 50 yrs., and have heard dozens of versions. But Von Ronk's singing and playing really captures the song for me. No one does it better!

Eric Bibb's solo version was the first time I heard this song. This is my second favorite.
