The envelopes and LFOs on this thing are amazing. The SQ80 model has more samples, polyphonic aftertouch etc was supposed to be improved over the ESQ1, but I wonder if it has the same feel. ESQ1 was one of Skinny Puppy's main synths right before the "VIVIsectVI" era and they used multiple ESQ1s live on "Aint It Dead Yet"
These and your OB12 demos are two of my favorite demos on YT. It's great to watch you edit sounds in these vids especially when one knows the interface of these synths. Peace
Nice vid. Jexus captured the spirit of getting in there and tweaking your own sounds from the ground up, going outside the box and pushing the limits of the esq-1. I hope he can get his camera fixed... all those bugs... just kidding... This vid alone may tripple the going ESQ ebay values... lol I may buy a second ESQ before people start driving up the prices.
Just bought my second ESQ1. Had one a few years back, which I couldn't program because the screen was dead. It was a metal-case one. The one I just got is the plastic case variety and just so you know, those don't have a headphone output!!! That's mildly annoying but other than that, it was well worth it.
This video alone convinced me to search for an ESQ1. I actually became obsessed with getting one and Jexus' high regard of it gave it an almost cult status in my mind. I freaked out when I saw one for 250 at the local music store. Jumped on it and have pulled 3 all nighters in a row now programming. The thing is the most underrated synth I have ever come across. What an amazing bargain and a true testament that you don't need a new synth to make great sounds!
@MrDebauch Pause the video at 10:00 (might take a couple tries since it's only up there for a split second) Jexus has a screenshot of an ESQ-1 posted up backwards that says 'FUCK VANGELIS' on the top line and 'FUCK JARRE' on the bottom line.
I feel so unimaginative everytime I watch one of Jexus's videos cause all I wanna do is get his patches, but never take he time to explore my synth as he has....
@sweeterthananything its like on his dx7 video, a bunch of old farts are complaining that he's not demonstrating the "lovely 80s sounds" you can make with it! it's the old farts that can't program synths that come on here to hear the presets on their old "favourite synths" that give it thumbs down...
Love the sound, dirty and lo-fi digital bliss topped off with analogue roundness, sometimes it does sound very close to a C64, if there was anything like a SID 2.0, this would be it, is there anywhere you can find a MIDI parameter chart for this one?
The sounds are so messed up the poor ESQ1 can't handle it and is garbling rubbish on the screen. Seriously I've never seen my screen look like that with text scrolling across. Great stuff as always Jexus ;)
? it's exactly like the sq 80... the cartridge is just on the opposite side... but 2:30 - 2:37 ? What sort of crazy patch is going on there?! also 8:09 -8:31 ! Rhythmic LFOs?
Hey, don't speak for me...lol. why would you want another programmers sounds? HE made them. Don't share them Jexus!Make your own man and get creative!
I prefer having as many parameters on different controls instead of having to switch between them. yes the ESQ1 is easier to program than say a DX7, but its interface is still obstructive to me. but I do regret selling mine :(
is this FM? Sounds like it here and there but some of it sounds subtractive too like it's a hybrid but i didnt think they had hybrids til way later on
it's a mix between analog and digital. It' has sample based oscillators and analog filters, vca etc. So it's capable of DX7 type sounds and also analog sounds.
thanks that's what i figured... there are some sounds on here that there's no way to duplicate exactly without FM... you could get it to sound kinda like it but the metallica DXish sound wouldn't really be possible on analog
also on the esq1 there's AM Modulation and hard sync. esq1 has two Waverom with 32 waveshape per osc (3 osc per voice). The CPU is underpower motorola (the lfo's slow down when the supply of work is high). The analog filters are 8 CEM3378 with built in mixer with panning. The esq1 is very spectacular synthesizer: SID sound, res moog bass and more...
Recognize it too and it is a tune from a commodore 64 game/demo. That one might in turn be a cover of some other song as often is the case with sid-tunes
And the terminator at 7.16...... Hahaha, this video is one of your finest.........
