Wow--I am afraid of these things. Not pitbulls, pythons, tegus, tarantulas or emperors--but centipedes, yes (okay, and wasps :-) I now have to reconsider this. Q: Would getting a baby, and being patient, make it any more likely to have a tame animal?
gloves seem to have a number of disadvantages to me. 1) i could accidentally squeeze the centipede, earning a bite. 2) i think the fangs are decently likely to get stuck in thick leather... they get stuck in my skin often enough... and then i have to very carefully free the centipede without hurting it 3) having a pissed off centipede climb *into* the glove would be quite horrible
i am thinking about gloves when i wild catch... to protect me from plants and rocks, though
i would only ever handle that thing with thick gloves...well something a gigantea couldn't penetrate? haha
but seriously, you bug dudes have massive balls. i mean, i'm rather odd. i'm ok with spiders and the tiny stuff...but if it gets larger than that or it's fangs are ginormous enough to leave little holes in you? it's off my list haha.
@1BrknHrtdRomeo that's funny, I'm the exact opposite. The Little House centipedes scare me, and things in general but the centipedes like this I think are kinda awesome
this isnt that big, on megavideo i was about to download some anime when this clip appeared on the hotlist, it looked really creepy so i checked it out and it was some GIGANTIC FUCKING CENTIPEDE eating some lil mouse...scary
I'm a snake guy that can't understand why people are deathly afraid of them. So when I say that I'm deathly afraid of centipedes especially the gigantea species, you probably look at me the same way.
However I would never kill one & am mysteriously intrigued by them. Anyway I'm sure if you stepped on this thing, your foot would start moving and a middle finger would pop out of the side of your shoe. Tough sons of bitches aren't they?
Oh my goodness, you got bit? was it one of those "house-pedes", or one of them big MotherSuckers?! Did it sneak up on ya? Oh, boy, I'm terrified of either one!
Thanx for this wonderful clip!I can feel with you when you try to pet this very docile specimen...In Japan there are big ones too but this beats everything!!!I LOVE watching them but who wants to die? Here they say you can die from their bite...though they are ONLY 15 cm...
Also the lethabillity is fairly easy to calculate since the poison is the same no matter were it comes from, it is stricly the amount of poison that is important. (IE The bigger the centipede the more dangerous is a good rule of thumb)
The reason for this is that it hasn't had a need to change in 400mil years so ALL centipedes the world over has the same type of venom.
The biggest besides Gigantea is Mortis from Malaya, the Mortis gets somewhat longer (30cm) but is a little lighter in build.
Centipedes venom has NO ANTIVENOM, and while most is not deadly they are excrusiating painful because the venom attacks the central nervous system as well as courses necrotic wounds.
That is one lethagic centipede, it most have been kept cold of feed a big fat mouse (Or both)otherwise it is extremely unvise to handle any centipede.
They are also by far the best escape artists in the invertebrate kingdom.
cool video im not into centipeeds so much i only like tarantulas i had three 1 died and i gave the other away the rose hair died and i gave my pink toe tarantula away cause it was to fast lol
if you saw one of those you would be in the Amazon, most likely. someone of your obvious intelligence and naturalistic tendencies would last about 6 hours before they got into trouble and would probably be dead in two days. i will chip in for your ticket ;)
it was nervous business the first few times i ever held one... and when i am holding species that i don't know the venom potency of it is pretty nervous sometimes, too. thanks for watching :)
it is very well fed and hydrated and the temperatures are not high enough to make it cranky. it is still a crapshoot, though. this individual seemed unusually well behaved, however.
