The reason that women at that time were so enamoured with their appliances and domestic tools is that this was the first time in history that domestic affairs were really being improved in America. Remember, these women grew up in the Depression era. Their mothers washed clothes on washboards and cooked on woodstoves. I'd have been delirious, too!
I wonder what those two actresses thought of the guff they were saying. They couldn't have believed in it, both probably worked on the stage, doing real acting, reading real work by free thinkers. Being an actress at all was rebellious and an escape from type of people they're pretending to be here..
2:22 - "Freedom to go shopping when the urge hits you!" That's what it's all about!
Around the time this film was made, the government of the United States had overhtrown the democractically-elected government of Iran (1953) and Guatemala (1954), and it was deeply involved supporting the French in reestablishing colonial rule in Vietnam.
All three of these actions resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands to millions of human beings.
Still very much inside of the box, but I love how scheming those two women are.

things sure are different now. I don't think I could cook rice either. But I want to try. My dad says I need to become "domesticated".
