(cont'd from below) Theater orchestras needed service and retail shops as well. During the jazz age in the twenties, the trumpet was the coolest instrument to play. So naturally the shops would cater to the tastes of the public. All those shops were originally brass and woodwind shops. When rock and roll hit, everything changed. Guitars became the big sellers. If you're ever on the corner, just think that those stores witnessed the entire evolution of twentieth century American music.
I hang out at these shops all the time. Over the years I met Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews and Rick Nielson from Cheap Trick.
The reason why those instrument shops are clustered together on that little part of 48th street is because they serviced the entire music business for almost a century. Radio and T.V literally began right down the block at Rockefeller Center. Those orchestra musicians needed repair and retail shops in the neighborhood. You are also in the theater district. edge is such a lovely humble man, u2 and nyc, its a match made in heaven, the worlds greatest band and the worlds greatest city, this was filmed in june 2001, i remember seeing it on irish tv then, little did we know what fate awaited nyc 3 months later, 911, god bless nyc and its people, the greatest on the planet
They do not need to be employed in any other regard. These guys are doing exactly what they need to be doing. I love at least 99% of their stuff. Even that techno album was good and I don't even like techno. Achtung Baby is a masterpiece. I have to praise a band that is not enslaved to sales and records music they think is good even if it doesn't sell a trillion copies. Enough said.
My first thought was that is sounded like an adaptation of sunday bloody because of how he was singing the melody and he just changed the rhythm of the chords, but the more I listen the more I know that's not it... puzzling
at 3:16 that bloke walks out of the shop totally oblivious to the fact that he has just walked past The Edge. ....I bet he would think now,"if only I stayed a minute longer...."
Ah...West 48th St. Sadly, some of these guitar shops are vanishing, the worst case being Manny's Music. NYC has changed a lot in eight short years since this was made, but then, it always is changing. (I think the second shop he was in was Manny's.)
I think I´ve found out the chords for the song on 2:20..... First A-Chord (E5-A7-D7-G6-B5), then C#m-Chord (A4-D6-G6-B5), then G-Chord (E3-A5-D5-G4) and finally D-Chord (A5-D7-G7-B7)....!
You can also add a Bm-Chord (A2-D4-G4-B3-e2) instead of the D-Chord - that sounds great!
You can get a similar effect to the C#m, by playing the inside strings of the A with your fingers. Of course it sounds a little different, but for people that have problems switching between 6th string majors and 5th string minors, it flows better.
For the little chorus that comes in at about 2:38, the chords are E 5th string root, B 6th root, and back to A on the 6th.
he must be embarassed being a big rock star going into a guitar shop and then just playing a chord. Never mind, I'm sure his wealth, status and public adoration will soothe his bruised ego. But still...I know I would have had to leave because I would have cracked up.
Maybe you still have to listen to their last album... If you stop creating, if you stop innovating, your band will start copyin' itself as Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Bon Jovy...etc.etc.etc.
U2 are the only one example of innovation today.Without them, you wouldn't know killers, coldplay,FFerdinand and so on...
no problem dude, because u2 is the best band in out life times, and we as fans are all lucky to see and even better to see in a live concert =) i just gave a another green thumb hehehe peace
I agree with many of the comments here. Edge is an innovator and true creator. The guitar wasn't designed only to be played fast and to cram as many notes in as possible. It should be explored for it's possibilities. Edge has done just that. He is an amazing guitar player.
Exactly, if there was a "this is the way the guitar was designed to be played" way, then there wouldn't be any of that EVH-Vai-Satriani shred stuff, just Renaissance ballads.
that makes me feel so much better about my guitaring. i've spent hours and hours trying to get my delay to sound like where the streets have no name, and it shows you that to really get the proper sound you need his whole delay rig, since even he, the EDGE, can't make it sound quite right without the extra equipment.
still is the greatest guitarist in terms of melody. forget any soloing or improv skills, put down a chord progression and the EDGE will make it sound out of this world.
I agree, Edge has one of the best styles in the history of rock n roll guitar. Most people who claim he is overrated are focused on high speed licks, and all this stupid unmeasurable guitar whacked out feats... that shit ain't real, its just wanking around. The D chord delay part he plays in With Or Without You is more powerful than all the notes of shred/lead guitars player combined.
@xmacvicar The dude has his own style and I like that. Sometimes I wish there was no ego driven gun slinger mentality among many guitarists...but then again it can distinguish where someone is at in their musical tastes/(spiritual journey?). @xmacvicar are you talking about the outro? i completley agree. so simple to play, but so powerful. some of the greatest songs in rock are the simplest riffs.
He's actually not overrated at all he has one of the most original styles ever created. Just because he doesn't show off and try to be the fastest or heaviest doesn't mean he isn't amazing. They're songs would never be so popular if they weren't so great and you can't have an untalented guitarist writing amazing songs.
he was pretty much just jamming to himself. He should have made a song out of it, he was really on to something. I play it all the time myself, really got under my skin for some reason.
