Dont believe me? Take a look at all the high quality antique watches on the market. Look on ebay for people's great granfather pocket watch, they are all there.
@ephemeralprotagonist Dont get taken in by their romantic marketing, a watch like that is a terrible investment, and no one will appreciate it as much as you because they didn't pay for it. Just like the son in the story, sold the watch to pay for drugs and hookers most likely. Just get yourself some bars of gold instead, you and your family will be much better off with that.
have to settle with my Hamilton Jazzmaster for the time being the patek is well out of my league I love what they represent though uncomprimising quality
On May 1, 1839 in Geneva, Antoni Patek together with another Polish immigrant, the gifted Warsaw watchmaker Franciszek Czapek established their manufacture producing watches. The company was financially supported also by its first workers, among others Polish watchmakers: Wawrzyniec Gostkowski, Wincenty Gostkowski, and Władysław Bandurski.
@morava1 I believe Patek Philippe, Jaeger Le-Coultre and Breguet are the top watches you can get (especially the last one with tradition of people wearing them such as Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Talleyrand, Medvedev, Sarkozy, Tzar Alexander I, Napoleon Bonaparte etc. )
So at some point the young man actually sold the watch his father gave him, and then bought it back years later at a higher price. Would have been better if they'd showed the financial hardship that caused him to sell the watch in the first place.
@NGMonocrom Thats not how I understood it. How I understood it was that the Patek was never "given" to the son. Instead, the father made Patek auction the watch off years later, and his son will have to "earn" the watch back. To do so, his son will have to be successful, therefore as the son says in the film, "rise to life's challenges, and always do better for him and myself"...this short film is a masterpiece
To me, that seems like a very odd concept for a film. As someone who has purchased expensive, custom, items; the biggest issue isn't even the price. It's the availability. Imagine owning something that most collectors have never seen. Not just in real life, but not even in photos. I know what it's like to own something like that. I'm never selling it.
Imagine another guy at the auction who was more successful than the son. He'd be out the watch. Different ending.
Antoni Norbert Patek (1811 – 1877), Polish pioneer in watchmaking and a creator of Patek Philippe & Co.Veteran of November Uprising 1861 against Russia during which he was wounded twice. In 1832 he was engaged by general Józef Bem in organising an evacuation route for Polish insurgents through Prussia to France. On May 1, 1839 in Geneva, Antoni Patek together with another Polish immigrant Franciszek Czapek established their manufacture producing watches.
O.k. I love Swiss mechanical watches like everyone here , but watching this is so bizarre and creepy it makes me want to take a shower after watching this.
watch guy says hes over 50, but 25 years ago he was 20? Wouldn't that make him 45 years old? little slip up in the story line.....and how is it hes bidding on his watch he sold many years ago, but the watch hasn't been owned by anyone since then?
Says the watch was "owned by the same person for many years before he had to part with it for personal reasons" ... doesnt say only one person owned it. The son could have owned it for a long time, sold it and is now re-buying it.... it also says in narration that it happened when he was "20 years old or there-abouts" while the sub-title clarifies for us that it was 25 year ago exactly... pay attention to the details before you start calling them wrong.
No it doenst say only one person owned it, but it doesn't mention any other owner. He owned it for MANY YEARS, yet he was there to "rectify an error of his youth?" He must consider his 40's to be youth.
Secondly, I never questioned how long ago it took place (25 years). He would have to be AT LEAST 26 years old to be over 50 if he received the watch 25 years ago. 26 is closer to 30 than "20 something." Next time pay attention to the weak storyline before you start saying Im wrong.
Even the big three PP AP and VC cannot justify their prices, they simply cannot explain them when asked, it's just that they reached a point on which they became iconic, i mean we are talking about Patek!
The market justifies prices...If no one bought the watches the price would fall. Simply supply and demand. You can guy a 5 million dollar boat or you can buy a 150 million dollar boat. When you have billions, does 100 million matter? No. To someone worth 50 million, the difference between a 25,000 dollar watch and a 5,000 dollar watch means nothing.
The free market is the greatest, the customer is in control.
I believe it. Most people own more than one watch. I have a video up "George Grasser for Longines" I doubt I could have made that video with a Patek, and my evidenza gives me classic 1920's style, swiss made high end quality that even the most poverty stricken can afford.
I recently acquired a watch similar to the one in this video. It is a mens 18k gold 1950 Patek Philippe that has never been serviced! She still keeps perfect time 59 years later!
This was more than just a watch to this man, It was a gift from his Father. I know it's just a story, but he did not buy this watch new. He sold a gift from his father and felt it was a mistake. Patek Philippe watches go for many dollars more than the man in the video paid for his watch.
yup. that, aND it took years and years of R&D (engineering for the complicated mechanical movements to be as precise as they are), and add to that, costs manufacture time, among other things being handmade by highly trained professionals.
plus the name itself bears prestige, the 'heritage' that you mentioned; you're buying from a company who pioneered such things as the chronograph and perpetual calendar!
you certainly won't find a finer swiss movement brand elsewhere in the world
I was in what i was told was the first tv advert Patek Philippe ever made, does the whole father son thing, watching horses, walking the dogs, playing chess. Does anyone know if it's anywhere to view online? must be 10 years ago at least it was made...
I think we're on the same page. Are you talking about the ad in that the son follows what the father does and the background music is some catchy piano tune?
Yea, I love that so much too and have searched for long. Unfortunately, still haven't seen any post~~
furthermore, just as the carvings on the tree represent the narrators roots, the engraving on the watch has come to represent both past lineages and - as the watch is passed from father to son - future generations to come.
only upon the narrators aging, however, has the symbolism of the watch become apparent. the narrators true error was not so much in giving up the watch in the first place, but in failing to recognize the representation of the watch. upon retrieval of the watch, the narrator becomes aware of his responsibility to pass the watch along to his own son, and with it, his - and his fathers - wisdom and virtues.

I've watched this video at least a dozen times now. Since I can't afford a Patek Philippe, I bought a circa 2004 Rolex to present to my son when he graduates college. The watch is from the year he was born and will have the history of being in my possession and use during his childhood.
Thank you. My cousin the stock broker has a Rolex. He paid $13,000.00 for it or something like that. I don´t think his watch was 18k gold though. I once had a 1929 Gruen Doctors Watch with the Rolex Prince movement. Sold it to a man in Texas in 2005 for $900.00.
It took a while to first understand this video ,,,but when you do .......It is a masterpiece......Personally I own two Zenith El primero watches, which in itself are exquisite,,,,someday ,,,I'm hoping to own my own Patek Philippe.........
Fool, Obama will solve nothing, he is just a puppet. Its you who will have to make the difference and have to have a wish for greatness, it requires a lot off suffering.
in about a month it's my birthday and i'll be getting my dad's old Panerai [2004 model].He said that he will have it engraved with sm special but won't reveil anything to me.Can't tell you what it felt like when he let me know that this was gonna be my gift :)
Father's day i'm thinking of giving him my Lange, which was the one i started my collection with.So any suggestions on what to engrave on it will be highly appreciated.thx in advance :)
Congratulations on the news! A very nice watch indeed! As to ideas on what to have engraved on the Lange and Söhne? I think that is something far too personal for anyone to speculate on. I am sure that deep down those words you want expressed on such a personal gift are there!
Could someone explain me the story please? That watch was on auction for "personal reasons"? So the old owner went bankrupt, had to sell that family heritage and the other guy bought it for his son. Right?
Well, if it so he lost a lot of money on that transaction...
But anyway I think I get the message of this movie: If you have a Patek, don´t worry, whenever you go bankrupt you can sell your watch. And if you are sentimental enough you will buy it back as a highly overpriced item from a greedy auction house...(and probably you will go bankrupt again...)
I´m sorry I`m just joking, no offence. Very nice watch indeed but I prefer Chronoswiss...
I don't understand why some watches cost SOOOO much, I have a $7000 Rolex, an old $2500 Tudor (My father passed these two on to me), a $8000 Panerai, two Tag Heuer ($2500 and $3800) but how does a VERY simple (looking) Patek Philippe cost more than a car...up to the price of Exotic cars? What't the difference between a $9000 Rolex & a $26000 Patek?
I do have every respect for Rolex watches, but it would not be fair to compare a Patek Philippe with that of a Rolex, let alone a Tudor! Its like comparing a priceless work of art to a Hollywood movie.
I understand that the brands are different in price, it's just I want to know where that $10,000-$20,000 is "Physically" justified, is a Rolex going to not work after 60 years and a PP will last 500 years? stuff like that.
I think its to do with a mix of many things, obviously the movement especially from their most basic models takes months to assemble, they only produce as many as 100 and as few as 10 models per year, they have an unrivaled reputation for quality and after care, each watch is unique in that all parts (no matter how old - 50-100 years!) are archived and can be repaired/restored...
Each watch made is photographed and all details stored in their archive, one of the very few family owned watch house still in existence, their watches retain their value/even surpassing value, Patek Philippe actively seeks and attempts to buy their works back (particularly rare/old models) for their museum which further inflates their values particularly at auction.
haha she was choked and I simply couldn't believe it... they replaced it for her.. but my dad laughed saying his $500 watch is more solid than her ~$25k watch..
These watches DO require maintenance " lonsor" - usually every three years or so and when that time comes, only the factory is "authorized" to perform it.........at a price in both time and money.
Patek Philippe will service and/or repair any piece they have manufactured, regardless of age. However, not all parts are still available. in particular crystals and dials for some of their earliest pieces, particularly enamel dials and some square or rectangular crystals.
Outstanding video - poignantly illustrates why some things had such sentimental value and justifies my purchase of a Rolex watch for my 3-year-old this week. It was made the year he was born.
he sold the pathek to by a rolex to his son... I'm joking :-)

Yes, agreed, a lovely brand but please, a bit of a bad and cheesy video! It feels more like an episode taken from a European soap series...
Don't tell me you can't find a bonechilling musical piece of Arvo Part or some great "modern classic" composer to suport your marketing message...
Not the brightest move if you want to portray ultimate real European classic luxury!
Just take an example of the new "theme-tune" of Zenith's striking 10th or the "manufacture video"...

If watches are only for telling time, wouldn't a $30 timex be a waste of $30, since your phone can tell time more accurately?
A Patek Philippe is both a work of art, and beautiful jewelry that also tells time. It is well worth the price.

Fool, Obama will solve nothing, he is just a puppet. Its you who will have to make the difference and have to have a wish for greatness, it requires a lot off suffering.
Nobody will give, you have to take.

@dominikb12 Wait what the hell? Isn't this video about Patek Phillippe? I come to videos like this to avoid this kind of stupid bickering

That's how the rich pass the wealth. Now time to spread it so perhaps my kids can afford a Patek.

in about a month it's my birthday and i'll be getting my dad's old Panerai [2004 model].He said that he will have it engraved with sm special but won't reveil anything to me.Can't tell you what it felt like when he let me know that this was gonna be my gift :)
Father's day i'm thinking of giving him my Lange, which was the one i started my collection with.So any suggestions on what to engrave on it will be highly appreciated.thx in advance :)
azaas 3 years ago
Congratulations on the news! A very nice watch indeed! As to ideas on what to have engraved on the Lange and Söhne? I think that is something far too personal for anyone to speculate on. I am sure that deep down those words you want expressed on such a personal gift are there!
lt00000QMUL 3 years ago
i already figured what i will engrave mate :) But hey thx anyway -_*

cheers to you if you are one of the lucky few who can afford a lange and sohne watch.

Did you get the gift? Congrats anyways...
bluemane123 3 years ago
yeah i did get it :) Since then i moved on to other watches and now planning to get a JLC Master Compressor Chronograph ^^
azaas 3 years ago
Could someone explain me the story please? That watch was on auction for "personal reasons"? So the old owner went bankrupt, had to sell that family heritage and the other guy bought it for his son. Right?
Marrincourt 3 years ago
The gist I believe is that he sold it, regretted it soon after, thus deciding to buy it back.
lt00000QMUL 3 years ago 2
That's what I think. There was hardship and he sold it, then when he was financially able, he went to buy it back.
sapipa177 3 years ago

What't the difference between a $9000 Rolex & a $26000 Patek?
sapipa177 3 years ago
The movement is the difference. PP is like the rolls royce in watches.
hijosdeputarobones 3 years ago 5
I do have every respect for Rolex watches, but it would not be fair to compare a Patek Philippe with that of a Rolex, let alone a Tudor! Its like comparing a priceless work of art to a Hollywood movie.
KCL000000 3 years ago 2
I understand that the brands are different in price, it's just I want to know where that $10,000-$20,000 is "Physically" justified, is a Rolex going to not work after 60 years and a PP will last 500 years? stuff like that.
sapipa177 3 years ago
I think its to do with a mix of many things, obviously the movement especially from their most basic models takes months to assemble, they only produce as many as 100 and as few as 10 models per year, they have an unrivaled reputation for quality and after care, each watch is unique in that all parts (no matter how old - 50-100 years!) are archived and can be repaired/restored...
KCL000000 3 years ago
Each watch made is photographed and all details stored in their archive, one of the very few family owned watch house still in existence, their watches retain their value/even surpassing value, Patek Philippe actively seeks and attempts to buy their works back (particularly rare/old models) for their museum which further inflates their values particularly at auction.
KCL000000 3 years ago
Why do you think the SS Rolex Daytona is so much more expensive than its 18K counter parts? The answer is one of many reasons why PP is so expensive.
:-)
KCL000000 3 years ago
That's for all the detail info. Can't believe they take that long to make a the parts for a watch!
sapipa177 3 years ago
Because Rolex have stopped making the SS version and people think its going to be a rare collectible a few years down the line?

my friends aunty bought an Patek for $25k ~.
it was "losing" time.
haha she was choked and I simply couldn't believe it... they replaced it for her.. but my dad laughed saying his $500 watch is more solid than her ~$25k watch..
CmanCorporations 2 years ago
that is becuase ur father`s watch is a quartz. quartz is cheap but keep the time very correctly!
Patek is not very correct for keeping time but has value to past it to next generation. and do not need to change battery.
there is no quartz over 10,000. but a entry level for a patek is more than 10,000.

also, the watch doens't requiere maintenance and tax payments
lonsor 2 years ago
These watches DO require maintenance " lonsor" - usually every three years or so and when that time comes, only the factory is "authorized" to perform it.........at a price in both time and money.
LeCorbusier1929 2 years ago
Are you serious? What about Patek Philippe wristwatches manufactured in 1950?
hondolespaul 2 years ago
Patek Philippe will service and/or repair any piece they have manufactured, regardless of age. However, not all parts are still available. in particular crystals and dials for some of their earliest pieces, particularly enamel dials and some square or rectangular crystals.

@sapipa177 :
Leica MP and Patek Philippe are not for showing off...
They are just made for absolute discreetness (no visible tourbillon), precision, perfection.
And when we buy [Leica and/or Patek], the prices don't really bother us.
It's all about the priceless complicated mechanical camera/watch.
They are not just for taking photo and telling time but you know what i mean.
