I'm so grateful to this film because it introduced me to this beautiful piece of music which became my absolute favourite of all times! Actually the whole soundtrack fits beautifully. This music just lets me glow inside and I feel like melting and crying and laughing all at the same time.
This is a song I would want played at all of my important events, my wedding, on my death bed, and at my funeral. It just fits those situations perfectly and it's such a beautiful piece.
....to sit in the sands of Brigantine Beach, to have the seagulls above me and the sand beneath my feet, to think of you and this piece playing in my ear buds...those are my favorite things.
Kudos to Peter Weir. Introduced me to Arcangelo Corelli. I am ashamed I did not know Corelli's work before. I agree; best seafaring movie ever. 'May the saints and lords preserve us'. Classical music and the sea ... magnific.
@JeremyImp Arcangelo Corelli was a generation before Handel. Teacher to Vivaldi who inspired Bach who gave inspiration to Handel and so on and so forth. It is no coincidence that this sounds like Handel.
@Nacho66 There was actually a sequel planned, the cast, studio everything but for some reason the cash got pulled. So instead of Awesome maritime epic part II we get stuff like the expendables, funny (first time watch that is) but not epic. Master & Commander is like the Godfather on water.
@Leondias656 The crew, director and everyone involved, including the ships, have had the rights purchased for a total of three films. Crowe wants to do it apparently (and who the hell wouldnt), but its the film company that arent putting the cash in. Which is suprising, as M&C made a fortune.
@Phoenix258 Fair point, but after subtracting the theater owner’s cut and the cost of advertising, the movie lost money. Not necessarily a lot of money, but it was a loser nevertheless, and the corporations who make movies these days usually do not make sequels of money losing movies.
I guarantee you 'Master & Commander' would have MADE loads of money around the world if it stuck true to the book, which featured the HMS Surprise going after the USS Norfolk. But of course, it was made by an American company the movie was, so that wouldn't do of course...
i believe that this film won an oscar for for sound editing or somthing like that....i believe that teh film deserved more oscars in all types of categories, but at least they rewarded them for my favorite aspect of the film, the score and the soundtrack are absolutely fabulous in my opinion.... if i were rich, i'd personally fund a sequil!!!
@knightTknight yes, i truly wish that the adagio movement in this particular piece lasted for hours.... it's so beautiful it almost makes me want to cry because it evokes such emotion.... i am an artist and whenever i need some inspiration for a painting or drawing this is one of the works i frequenty play to give me that creative burst.
@knightTknight I believe you are mistaken "sir" in your vulgar assumption that this is a "classical work". It is in fact a baroque piece, for Arcangelo Corelli was alive during the baroque period of Western Art Music.
@moviesoundtrackgod I heard they were going to, back near the film's release there were definitely plans for it - but they probably caught wind of Disney's Pirates of the Carribean plans by then and decided they wouldn't win out against it.

@oracle897 They won't, my friend. for master and commander is a ( very well done) compilation of eleven books. but i wish they made a sequel about how aubrey and maturin met, it is a great story.
@oracle897 considering how they butchered the books to make this, I do sadly doubt. However I do hold out for a remake on tv or something closer to the books, would allow the entire series to take full shape. Steven's role as an intelligence agent was ignored, as well as Jack's behavior ashore.

the movie was good ., however this piece of music is awesome . to steal a quote from miloshrma " simply beautiful " is right on the mark. This is the best 1:57 i can give my mind .
Aubrey stopped chasing the Acheron to save Maturin! The friendship between these opposing characters is one of the main themes of the movie, and Corelli's music is used to celebrate it. Simply beautiful.

The reason no sequel was made is because this movie was too well done.
No pointless female micro drama, no obvious heroes, no Hollywood bullshit at all.
Very historically accurate and faithful to the books.
Not a recipe for big box office I'm afraid.
Gets my vote for best seafaring movie of all time. To watch this movie in 5.1 Surround is a joy to behold.
