@andrewscottgreer I'll be featured in an upcoming issue of Modern Drummer. There are also web log transcripts on my website from interviews I've done. Thanks for your interest.
i have a question if you see this (been following your work for a few years now and have been wondering this) is there anything specifically that has helped you become more ambidextrous more than anything else? again, just curious, wouldnt have you sharing any of your secrets! ;)
@DRUMAdam91 I'm assuming he's practiced enough to be mostly ambidextrous, but I think he started out as a lefty. If you look at his feet, his left foot is doing most of the kick drum work.
@friendofsnugglefun Actually, he's righty. He began to lead with his left hand/foot as a way to challenge himself as well as to keep his left side on par with his right, thus resulting in him having an ambidextrous playing ability. But he's right-handed. Look at video - Setup Explanation for more info regarding his setup and why he set it up that way.
I think you should put out a couple iso tracks that are just from the mic on the video camera like the cut out part in this video. I wanna hear your drums when they aren't mic'd.
I'd thoroughly enjoy a Cyclamen H2P lesson in the future Travis. The lick at 2:49 never fails to amaze me after two years and I'd love to be able to play it!
You're a great drummer dude! I just want to know one thing, are you left handed or are you right handed however you just are fluent with both your right and left hands? Honestly, when people play drums I don't think being right or left handed should even matter, ya know.
is he a lefty playing right hand set up?? he uses his left foot as the main kick... its trippin me out how he plays with that but uses right handed set up haha or maybe its just a style he's chosen... still a sweet drummer
Travis, this is my favourite tracking you've done and I know you've probably released the isolated version of this but is there any chance you could do the breakdown version of this song?
Travis I have a question for you. When these guitarist like this type show you their work and ask you to put drums to it, do they even know what they're doing, as in time signatures? Or do you have to figure that out
@shaftninja Oh good my guitarist isn't the only one haha. That sounds like hard work, especially for most of the music you play. Thanks for responding man
And I think you are the best drummer in the world, just saying. Not that my opinion matters lol
@shaftninja your answer just made me hate/respect you that much more. Watching your drumming inspired me to put metal on the afterburner and work on more musicianship. Thanks a bunch
@shaftninja Haha :D I know what you mean ;) I`ve worked with manny guitarists my self, and they rearly know if their playing a straight 8/8 or a 8/7 :D
@023bandito Check out his setup explanation video, he's right-handed, and played for many years on a right-handed kit. I think it was interest in independence that spurred to him to develop his left side.
@sonnybeilbill3 bro he doesn't hit the snare when he misses up, i just wanna know if it's possibl to get a sound like that live and not with any mixes, triggers or mics. i understand you will always have sustain , but i want that pop!
@baronofhell08 oh. you would probably need some sort of mixing. most recodred instruments dont sound live the way they do in studio any way. im a guitar player though, so i dont know.
I heard the music video to this and it doesn't feature the crescendo, :( well not like it is in this video. Did they use another drum take for the studio version?
I wish i could find a Drummer like you, Here in argentina everyone plays just thrash metal or heavy metal its allways the same, i need an all arround one hahah, Youre great travis, seriously.
Glad to see you are human and not ALL machine ;) Kit sounds KILLER! That coupled with amzaing playing = a joy to watch!
I'm curious what the mic technique is on your snare? There seems to be some distance from the microphone? What microphone is it and do you have another capturing the snare side?
@mastrorj68 I would say try a brass shell. Gretsch has a hammered brass snare drum that looks freaking amazing and I bet it sounds great as well. Travis uses a Pearl Reference Brass snare drum here and in most of his vids.
@inimicalODDITY thanks for the advice ill look at that gretsch, i actually on my own narrowed it down to the reference brass and the tama starphonic brass
@ox0Jason0xo He's not in this band. He does session work and so works with other people who want to use his drumming skills to add drums to their tracks and stuff. Go to his page and look at his list, you'll see he works with different people.
@ox0Jason0xo he's not in cyclamen, (which is a great fuckin' band by the way) but djent isn't a genre, any band that labels themselves as "djent" don't even use the djent style of playing, they're just trying they're damndest to sound like either periphery or meshuggah. this is math metal with post-rock influence. and tech death? really? why the fuck would orbin be in tech death so he can blast all day? jesus christ kid.
lol I can only dream of becoming this good... great job, I love the feel you brought to the song, fits perfectly and brings out the emotion mr. Hayato wanted to achieve no doubt.
@andrewscotter he's a righty. check out his setup explanation video... he goes into detail about how he came to become some proficient with his left limbs.
just great! since i listen to periphery and sea i begun to play more polyrhytms, its a cool feeling to play drums when such a riff works - i descripe it as "mindopening" ! thanks man!! by the way - your footwork at bassdrum and hats is great, hats constant an bassdrum totally crazy - damn yes! ^^
right hand lead, i understand. right hand lead WITH left foot lead? is it just what you are more comfortable with? i only ask because it seems very odd to me. nevertheless, it does seem to make things more challenging lol i'm not insulting your playing style, rather, inquiring as to how you came about playing this way.
Incredible stuff here. Brilliant playing and a great studio sound. Just wondered whether you sell sample packs of like individual hits on each drum? I use EZdrummer software and ive seen people trigger there own samples using The EZdrummer and a trigger.
@breakinknucklesruler Man, that'd make my year. Alas, Tosin has a drummer. It would be awesome if Travis did some covers though. I doubt there is a person that would play it more perfectly. Not sure if he would be into doing that though.
@inimicalODDITY Navene fits animals perfectly now though. he used to be a death metal drummer and he completely changed his style to be in that band. if you see them live the drums now sound way better than the album
@CitrusWavelengths They may SOUND better, but the playing is not as technical or detailed as the albums whatsoever. He misses so many of the more advanced sections in every song. He is a good player though, and I am not hating; it's just the truth.
@inimicalODDITY I think it sounded pretty awesome with his own touches now. I'm a guitarist so I don't pay enough attention to drums to pick out a missed section, but I dunno I just can't wait to see what he comes up with for the new stuff
You are a great drummer, but it's wierd watching this video, different from your other videos, this video makes you seem like you have that natural drummer style...that's really wierd, you are still a kick ass drummer.
what was the inspiration to set your kit up like this? i've seen a lot of people copy it. did you come up with this, or were you inspired to set up this way by another drummer?
1:19 onwards is dreamy, its danny careyish but less 45 year old man!. your a f*uckin legend on the drums man, your the reason I'm spending and extra 9 hours a week on the drums.
Seriously, you've inspired me to get back into this genre that i loved. Just two questions? Are you left handed or right? And which way did you learn to play first? I'm just starting to learn to play right handed. (I myself play left handed)
@OeeOO Periphery's better off with Matt. He's a groovy guy, and Periphery is a groovy band. Travis is tight and technical, more cold and robotic, which fits better in Sky Eats Airplane.
@MattM2011 I think that Periphery's worse of without Sabol and Orbin. If you listen to the "Icarus lives" version with Orbin, there are some amazing details that are completely left out whith Matt on the drums!
@Oxpost Yeah, but a groovy band doesn't need ghost notes and other subtleties. It's all opinion though, and I appreciate you saying it without getting angry!
@MattM2011 It's not a matter of needing, it's a matter of what sounds best. And to me, the inclusion of ghost notes, more often that not, makes the songs in question a bit more interesting to listen to!
you make this set-up intriguing.....but i'm not gonna try it...i'm not gonna try it..i'm not gonna try it...i'm not gonna try it..i'm not gonna try it...i'm not gonna try it..
I'm highly impressed! I've never been much of a Double Bass guy but tracks like these make me want to get the other pedal out again, blow off the dust and get grooving. Great job!
I wish more drummers took their instrument as seriously as Travis does. It would allow recording engineers to be engineers rather than drum programmers again.
Wow, very nice. Lovely snare <3

Seriously, you've inspired me to get back into this genre that i loved. Just two questions? Are you left handed or right? And which way did you learn to play first? I'm just starting to learn to play right handed. (I myself play left handed)
You are one hell of a drummer Travis.

@vrdrums Check out his setup explanation video, should answer all your questions, including that one!

MattM2011 1 year ago
@MattM2011 It's not a matter of needing, it's a matter of what sounds best. And to me, the inclusion of ghost notes, more often that not, makes the songs in question a bit more interesting to listen to!

are you lefty?
or you just are awesome and play both?
rudiiwii1 1 year ago
@rudiiwii1 Travis is ambidextrous, so he can play both, hands and feet.

I haven't even heard programmed drums that sound this tight. Way to be travis. Way to be.

You should put up a video of just the audio from the camera. No mics.

I'm highly impressed! I've never been much of a Double Bass guy but tracks like these make me want to get the other pedal out again, blow off the dust and get grooving. Great job!

It looks like he just randomly put that kit down around his kick, lol.

@YOWHATTHEHELLUP71 Doesn't look random to me at all... just symmetrical.

I wish more drummers took their instrument as seriously as Travis does. It would allow recording engineers to be engineers rather than drum programmers again.
