You can do that technique on almost any hand drum. You drag the slightly padded part of your finger across the surface of the drum with just enough pressure for it to kind of stick but not completely stop in place so that your finger vibrates rapidly across the surface of the drum. Its not hard, but exactly how you do it will vary depending upon the finish of the drum, the wood grain, your finger oils, etc.

His Cajon must be pretty broken in though. I hear that a broken in cajon has more sounds and character.
