One night I was walking home & I made the mistake of taking a short cut through an alley. Two thugs in green raincoats blocked my path. I tried to talk some sense into them but they wouldn’t listen. This went on for about 10 or 15 minutes before I realized they weren’t thugs. In fact, they weren’t even people…… just two big green garbage bags. I walked around them. When I got home I made myself a ham sandwich. I wanted to put mustard on it, but there was none left.
the word cover is not even in the original title on pentastar LP, maybe a correct title would be "earth's rendition of jimi hendrix's peace in mississippi"
Just want to say, that when Earth does a cover, the word cover is meant to be tongue in cheek. It's true in spirit and key and many notes, but distorted to be an Earth jam. I think it still counts as a cover since Earth's stylistic statement is such a core component of their appeal. If you hear a flaming lips cover, you want it to be radically different from the original, and the same goes for Earth.
The original song was not really ready for release, we hear it in it development on “Crash Landing”. It just does not sound like a finished song. If you study Jimi’s work you can readily see what I’m talking about.
Hell yeah, they should make an ten-hour version of this so you can listen to it on the highway across the whole country... I don't need any other song than this one for the road.
this is a cover-if it was techno we would call it a remix...it has jimi's vibe, and chords... just listen to brigitte bardot's "contact" and then the wooden shjips cover...and booka shade edit. different things, but still: covers.
Sounds like Jimi's tune to me. Jimi was playing both rhythm and lead, this they obviously have two separate tracks laid out. Same driving riff though.
No, surely this song has Jimi's style and vibe, and i'm not denying that. But if you're doing a cover version , at least some parts(riffs) of the original song must be present in it, otherwise it's not a cover song, but a completely independent tune.
I'm just saying I think it's all there. Jimi's has the bass doing practically the same riff that the guitar in this track is doing, same open E chugging behind the lead guitar.
@max300988 I like to believe that a cover has to be mostly of the original artist's creative intent, and a remake is mostly of the person remaking the song's creative ideas.
@max300988 Cover and remake aren't synonyms. A cover version is a version of a currently popular song recorded by a band to capitalize on the song's already established "hit" status. A remake of a song is a revival of a song that is no longer popular.

It's not a cover. It's a tribute to the first drone/stoner song ever made.

this is the same "Earth" that had a record called something like "Graduate Studies in Eyeball Surgery"?

You are right and wrong at the same time.
Cover and remake are synonyms.
So you can call it both ways, it doesn't matter.
