By the way, Mary Hopkin's gorgeous Welsh version of "The Coming of the Roads" is also available on iTunes. However, it is mislabeled "Tyrd Yn Ol (Can't Help Falling in Love)"... I hope she will re-record it someday in English...
@richpat -- My comment of 2 weeks ago was certainly not meant to criticize you. I very much appreciate the fact that you posted this rare performance on YouTube and I, of course, did not know of the lengths to which you went to do so... I did not know if this TV clip was readily available and was hoping that someone could post one of better quality because Mary Hopkin's version of "The Coming of the Roads" is perhaps the most beautiful ever sung.
An excellent rendition and congratulations for your efforts in saving a rare piece of footage and I love the Harry Secombe intro. We in Oz would not have seen this if it was not for you. Having said that I am surprised that the Judy Collins version has not been uploaded until I did it today.
Mary's version of this classic Billy Edd Wheeler song is fine indeed. However, the poor quality of the audio detracts from the song. Can anyone re-post this clip with better audio...?
@Tony2581 well thanks a bunch mate!... this was recorded from tv to VHS in 1984 as a fan it was played to death, then transferred to computer, then uploaded here ... the fact that it remains at all is a blessing to all us MH fans... She never recorded this in english, but her Welsh language version is available to buy from all good internet outlets!
@Tony2581 I've played with the track and enhanced the high frequencies and minimised the hiss. richpat has a unique piece of footage here and I doubt if any other exists in the World. If richpat would like it for reposting all he needs do is give me an email address and I'll send it to him as an MP3
What I beautiful haunting redition of a poignant song. Thank you! I used to sing and play this after hearing the Judy Collins version, but this one is totally different, and her soprano is so moving.
Thanks, that is interesting that you discovered it the other way around. I have listened to this youtube version over and over, it touches a deep chord.
You might want to list the writer of the song, Billy Edd Wheeler, in your tags. I have the Welsh recording that Mary made, but it's given a completely different title--is the melody traditional under a different set of lyrics? (Many of the early folkies in the 60s "stole" trad melodies for new lyrics, as Dylan did for many songs, for example. Did Wheeler do that here?) The best known cover of this is probably Judy Collins's on her _Fifth Album_, which is where Hopkin probably heard it.
What a stunning performance. What a beautiful voice...just beautiful!.
Is the CD that this song appears on still available and what is the title of the CD? I am in California so don't know how easy it would be to get it if only released in Europe. I never knew that Mary even recorded this song. I do have it on a CD by American folk singer, Priscilla Herdman who does a lovely version of it as well.
She never released this in English only in the Welsh language. The title is "Tyrd yn ol" and is available on a CD called "the early recordings" on the SAIN label,
Mary has though, been releasing her back catalouge recently via her own label Mary Hopkin Music
The coming of the roads! We could do with some new roads near where I live. The A27 is taking an absolute age to finish .Personally I blame the workmen.Last week I actually saw one of them with a spade in his hand. He also had some diamonds clubs and hearts!
Yes this was originally released on the Cambrian label CEP712 in 1970 as the b side to "Pleserau serch" it was called "Tyrd yn ol"
If you have only heard her Welsh songs on the "Welsh World of Mary Hopkin" I recommend you get hold of a CD released in 1996 on the Welsh Label SAIN SCD2151 called the "Early Recordings"
The songs on the Decca recording "Welsh World" were ruined by terrible overdubbing drums etc
The "Sain" CD is true to the otiginal recordings and the sound is excellent.

What a great comment.
It was through Mary's Welsh language version of this song that I discovered Judy Collins,

Most certainly it was Judy Collins version she would have heard. Her school teacher used to do all her translations for her.
