Why do people even bother to argue on the internet?
None will help you pay your bills, be your lifetime partner, or in any way shape or fashion mold any part of your life. You would do better arguing with your dog or cat. At least they are tangible.
It is just wasted energy.
Enjoy the music & ignore the BS.
Life is too short to get caught up in this kind of silliness.
A very brave man once said, "All this is not unrelated to world peace. "When a man's ways please the Lord," the Scriptures tell us, "he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him." And is not peace, in the last analysis, basically a matter of human rights—the right to live out our lives without fear of devastation—the right to breathe air as nature provided it—the right of future generations to a healthy existence?" John F Kennedy , Sr.
This song was my first public solo in 7th grade in 1974 at Julius West Jr. High School. There were 3 of us. Two white boys and me the black girl who was assigned to sing the Martin part. Something about that bothered me back then but I said nothing. Shut up and sing. All of it was a testament to an old approach to teaching hopefully left behind by music teachers. I never learned about who originally sang the song and never heard a single version til ...today. This one I dig!
So the god you revere, worship and claim is omnipotent, infallible and perfect in every way (and created you and every living thing and all that medieval bullshit) presumably ensured that for years people were enslaved, lynched, denied their civil rights and discriminated against. And still are treated like shit, generally (despite the Disneyesque image that the USA likes to put out - look at the racial hatred towards the President). Rights ain't god-given. Thank brave people.
@krakenwave and the Same God that I love, LOVES YOU TOO. Soft words turn away wrath. Now if YOU want to further this, do it by yourself because I utterly refuse to let you engage me meaningless verbage. You're simply not worth it, ENJOY!
"I utterly refuse to let you engage me meaningless verbiage. You're simply not worth it..."(sic)

A remarkable and passionate tribute to a remarkable character that became the man of the 20th. Century. Sung from the depth of soul and heart this rendition will remain an unforgetable expression of devoation. GREAT
Man, I'm in tears just sitting here. The references, the beautiful music and the absolute gift to us that was Marvin Gaye. Thanks for leaving us such a beautiful body of work for us to enjoy and remember you by.
I bought this single when it first came out . It's as powerful now as it was then. Abraham, Martin ,John and Bobby ....the best that the U.S ever had...sadly missed...never forgotten. The Good they die young
the good seem to die young, cause the bad have to much power! Martin and john were assassinated. i dont know about they others. wake up people!!!! we will have our day.
Oh please - I'm a Brit but even I I know this is John's brother Bobby (Robert Fitzgerald Kennedy) - the greatest President the USA never had - and Abraham Lincoln - assassinated for freeing the slaves and not kissing the Confederate ass!
my twin brothr died the year this came out.i cry and cry when i hear this.i miss my brother so much,i always add his name to the list abraham, martin, john, and tim
i play this once a day for tim,and i also say a prayer for him,and all the people who have lost a loved one
has anybody here seen my friend dave? just looked around and he wasgone..anybody here seen aaron, mom or dad? i know they're still in my heart, just beyond the great beyond..
I graduated in 73, and i wished now, I could go back in time. Kids, music, dance, having a beer and hanging out with friends at Hines Park in Michigan, was great. I sang till my friends couldn't take it anymore. They would turn the music down and all they could hear was my voice. That shut me up. LOL
@ryanlynn146 There was definitely some great music back then. I was born in that decade, so I kind of remember this stuff. There is some good stuff now days, but not where every one came sing collectively like back in those days. That's why I practice my vocals to this stuff the most. It's really starting to become one of a kind, the 60s and 70s. Too bad we all can't live in a simple era like that (don't take that in a bad way because I don't mean it in a negative way).
Cannot get anymore soulful than the way Mr. Marvin Gaye sang this most remarkable song. We lost this this tremendous musical talent way too soon...RIP Abraham, John,
beautiful song my girlfriend chloe lost her elder brother in a car crash last night he died too young only 22 this is his favourite song it will be played at his funeral. she keeps looking for him and hes gone this song sums up her feelings the words are so poignant

one of the most poigant songs ever written. beautiful.. hearing this , still fills me with emotion, a teacher played this to me..when i was 13.. and today, it still makes me think.. one of the best..were are lucky to have been blessed with marvins voice.. still today
OK, I heard Dion's version, cool version; I heard Smokey's version, it was good, but Marvin's version is more potent to my ears. Hearing his falsetto sing those lyrics sounds like a teardrop. No doubt this song helped influence him to do "What's Going On". His version made #9 in the UK. Amazing feat. RIP Marvin, I ask the same question about you, Michael J. and Teddy.
"Abraham , Martin, John" was written by Dick Holler and first recorded by Dion in 1968. The references, as you would know far better than I, are to three prominent 'fighters' for racial equality. It is the closed mind that might persuade discriminatory thought; sounds like this can only help to repair the wanton damage incurred through past sad histories. Take good care all Brothers and Sisters - life is hard enough as it is!
I know with all certainty- Marvin Gaye is/was The Crown Prince Of SOUL
Abraham, Martin & John is a perfect example of soul in the lexicon of epic songs of celebration of the spirit of humankind. MG's presentation is more confirmation of this truth.
First let me say that the two best versions of this song are by Marvin and Dion. Both slightly different but, excellent in their own right. 2nd, let me say the song stands on it' s own. Great words and meaning. Too bad we as a society seen unwilling to accept goodness from the few people that want it for us. No we have to kill them. Just listen to Kris K' s "They Killed Him". It tells the story. Marvin was such a beautiful, soulful person. Sad he died the way he did.
Thank You, what a lovely reply, it has really made my day. especially on this cold and wet morning here in England. You take care and my best Holiday wishes goes out to you and yours also.
I guess it's a matter of opinion but I just checked out the Dion version because a few people was saying how much better it was than this. Sorry I disagree this version is much much better. Just my opinion.
Why do people even bother to argue on the internet?

"Abraham , Martin, John" was written by Dick Holler and first recorded by Dion in 1968. The references, as you would know far better than I, are to three prominent 'fighters' for racial equality. It is the closed mind that might persuade discriminatory thought; sounds like this can only help to repair the wanton damage incurred through past sad histories. Take good care all Brothers and Sisters - life is hard enough as it is!

That's almost not worth a reply. Marvin is the greatest singer of all time! Smokey is wonderful but....

I know with all certainty- Marvin Gaye is/was The Crown Prince Of SOUL
Abraham, Martin & John is a perfect example of soul in the lexicon of epic songs of celebration of the spirit of humankind. MG's presentation is more confirmation of this truth.

I guess "seems the good die young" woks better lyrically than the more factual "seems the good are murdered by zionists"

I guess it's a matter of opinion but I just checked out the Dion version because a few people was saying how much better it was than this. Sorry I disagree this version is much much better. Just my opinion.

I prefer the original. I think Marvin is over singing it, IMO. It is still worth its weight in gold.

I still like Dion's version best. Check out his live performance on the Smothers Bros. in 1968. It's here on YouTube.

I like the way Dion sings it the best. Unfortunately, in Dion's recording there is a really shitty orchestral intro and ending.

dont be mad at me but i like the other version sung by dion better. I do like marvin gaye but i just prefer the other version
