I know that the arguments and debates often focus on Tweedy vs Farrar, Son Volt vs Wilco, but I think Mike Heidorn should get as much if not sometimes a little more credit than Jeff or Jay. His drumming was somewhat unorthodox yet lyrical and so often drove the melody as much as the guitar or bass. Plus he was a powerhouse. The first incarnation of Son Volt with Mike on drums is far stronger than Jay's new studio cats. A true reunion needs to be these three, not just the Jay and Jeff show.
The poor mans paul and john. They are both great and unique in their own ways. I think Jay is more consistent and stronger and awesome, but Jeff comes up with some brilliant stuff to offset his aloofness and out there tendencies. Gotta love them both and I think a reunion would be a big hit.
god damn! i agree mreplen....wilco has been a TOTAL disappoint. their last album..ehh..cd...sucked!... jay farrar is great.....love his song writing....so good...
Wow. Great stuff. Legends of rock n roll. One of those bands that sound just as good live, if not better, than their records. And I am a fan of anything Jay or Jeff have been involved with since.
I love UT and Graveyard Shift. Their dynamics and Jay's vocal sound almost like Steve Earle Meets Bleach-era Nirvana. I like both Son Volt and Wilco, but I preferred Son Volt when they had Jay, Mike, and the Boquist bros.
I opened this show with Electric Sheep. We did a kick ass cover of sympathy for the devil with Chicken Truck. If anyone has the video, please post it. These were the days my friend.
uncle t rocks! i used to live around the corner from lounge ax, saw dozens of bands there, but moved away from chicago right before these guys started getting big. me & my bad timing...
This is always the particular song I remember from the era, and anytime I hear Son Volt or Wilco. I was lucky enough to see these guys in Athens, Georgia, in early November of 1989, at a $5 show.
THanks for posting this. Was a fan of early Son Volt & a lot of Wilco, after A.M., but sometimes I forgot how great Uncle Tupelo was. I'm glad I got to see Jay perform last summer.
This was always such a rocker. They really slew this song live in the early days. Jay doesn't get recognized for his guitar work nearly enough. And they must have been all of 18 when this was taped.
Wilco and Son Volt are BOTH what UT sounded like and looked like...seeing them many times at Cicero's (the old good one), when they were kids...the fierce dynamics, thrashing music, memorable songs (see above), every time I've seen Wilco or SV since I always come away thinking "two sides of a coin".
Wilco is a khak-pop band with not as much talent as Son Volt now has in 1 drum stick. Jay kept it real while Jeff lost it to the chase of the almighty dollar
@mresplendent Complete opposite for me, I really wanted to love Uncle Tupelo but I find Jay's voice very boring where as Tweedy is one of my favourite vocalists of all time.
I don't know why you got so many negative ratings. Seems dead on the money to me. Though Son Volt's pretty good, I agree with your assessment of Wilco.
Thanks. I see a few other anti-Wilconians who haven't gotten ANY negative comments. In fact they've got positive feedback. Just goes to show you the mentality of Wilco fans.
I was the "monkey cam" for this show at The Soulard Preservation Hall. We shot it on 3/4" video for Double Helix Public Access TV. UT was the last of 4 bands (The Bottle Rockets played before them). Running around the stage and looking through this viewfinder was how I saw them for the first time.
they broke up because jay was pissed that jeff was taking the spotlight from him and he didn't feel like sharing his songwriting duties with him anymore. oh, and also, he thought jeff was hitting on his girlfriend.
0:55 maybe that moment was a metaphor presaging the band's break up...the mic stand was gonna be fine and not tip over, despite Farrar's perhaps well-meaning intervention...
LOVE LOVE LOVE! THANKS

@ElGoodo I like Jay's voice, but you really don't know what Tweedy's going to do.
First, he sings all high and like a alt-country Cobain, but in Wilco, his voice drops quite a bit.
