Okay. I watched a couple of videos of Gabe trying to see if they were the same person and then I realized that the have the same shield with the exception of I think in my video he has a yellow stripe across the top half for some reason.
Okay. There were two fighters that looked exactly the same with their armour on so I don't really remember who was who. Where is Gabe from because if that is who it is I would like to change it in the info.
Hey guys. Dustin here. Go ahead and leave you comments on whether you liked the video. If you are in the SCA then please post with advice on how to be a better fighter. I appreciate all advice. I am the fighter in black armour.
Hey there. just had a couple comments for advice, since you asked. I am sure you have improved greatly in the last 4 mounths, but the main thing I noticed is the lack of hip movement to generate power and speed. Using your body, not just your arm(like you are in the video) to generate your power is a must. It will both give you more speed and power and you will tire out slower. Also, hold your sword back and a little less vertical, more so you form an a with your shield and sword.
Thank you very much. I will keep that in mind and try to use my hips more. I have been taking tai chi and that is pretty much the same principle that all strikes start with rotation of the hips. This video was actually taken almost two years ago so hopefully i have improved since then. The sad thing is that everytime I try to tape a fight my girlfriends batteries always die before we get there.... eventually i will post a new video. Thanks again for the advice.
I was just going by the date of posting. :D Where about's do you practice? There is nothing like having some experienced fighters show you in person, proper body mechanics. Ever use a pell for practicing on? I had to learn things the hard way without many teachers in my area. So starting out I found my pell was invaluble.
I am practice in Bloomington whenever I am home and not working. I go to college three hours away close to fort wayne but somehow i pissed off one of the fighters there without knowing it and can't really go back there. So as of right now bloomington is the place to be for me. I don't have a pell since I am in college and when I am home (still 19) my parents do really approve of that stuff around the house.
I am up in Eastern Canada. Not really much of a group... a few members, but we don't have any sort of regular practice. I mostly just go to events and try to stay in shape for them. "Pell practice" can be done without an actual pell. I know when I started I just used a corner of a building at the house. Just throw your shots really slow paying attention to correct body/shot technic. Don't throw the shots hard...just slow so you can build muscle memory. Only need a couple min a day.
I pretty much walk around all day then doing pell practice. lol I can't help it sometimes I just find my self going through the motions of a strike without realizing that I am doing it. Sadly I can't have weapons on campus and the rattan counts so I can't practice with it but I go throught the motions pretty much everyday. What really confuses me though is that I have seen so many different types of styles from so many different people that when I try to do a move they say there's a better way
There are as many different styles as there are people who fight. its my view that there is no perfect style, because they all have strengths and weaknesses. Many of them are regional as well. The only advice I can give you to is try everything a couple times, but don't change a thing just because somebody said its better. When people offer me advice, I try it a few times practice it a bit, but if I can't make it work, then I tuck it away and go back to what I was doing.
I sort of float between styles. I do'nt stick ridgedly to any of them. I learned to throw shots from any position, and so in the course of a fight I am able to throw a shot and almost any moment no matter how I find myself situated. Against some fighters I might start out with a high guard, against others I use an "A" frame, others (especially lefties) I close up and bring my sword back quite a ways. Majority of the time I fight sword leg forward. But at any point of time in the fight I can
transition to another "style" of fighting as things dictate. The only thing that all succesful styles of fighting(SCA or otherwise) have in common, is control the center line. If you can control that invisible line between your chest and your opponent you control the fight and you are in the best place to win. Thats the whole stategy behind combat. But remember, there is no "right way" of fighting, just the "right way" for you.
