They released the "Game Boy Light" in Japan only. Not sure if that was a brick or pocket model though.

The patterns are memorized by the gameboy, the skill is in composition with such a limited capability (2pulse channels, 1 Wave and 1 White noise) and the ''live mode'' in lsdj means that he must trigger the patterns when he need them in the song, it can get very hectic trying to keep up with the song so its not actually ''fake'' as you say. he is actually doing something on it
