Thanks for selling us out, Prentice. I, like every other individual in Canada, rather enjoy being automatically guilty and having to prove my innocence to the corporate culture hacks.
Remind me to send you a thank-you card when I get my first lawsuit or have my laptop searched by Homeland Security.
Prentice, don't feed us horse shit and tell us it's chocolate. "Updating copyright law so it reflects universal standards." He means AMERICAN standards, which are not only ridiculous, they hurt consumers and limit creativity.
Welcome to Canada, the 51st state of these United States of America.
Vernier gave a nonsense answer. I don't think language was the barrier, she doesn't understand technology.
And can you honestly believe Prentice would explain the bill to a child, in the way that he did? He really lied, because one example was $20,000 liability, not $500, because a digital lock was involved in the infringement.
He's at least decent at being a stooge and reading the script he's given; she can't even do that; the situations would probably be switched if they were doing this is French?
A couple of botox-powered corporate robots, masquerading as leaders of a free society. Go Conservative bushie-loving minions, follow the corporation's orders!
What he is saying in response to DRM is: we do not care about personal use. If the publisher wants DRM, and you break the DRM for personal use, you break the law.
Spin 101 - just shovel it back with a big "REJECTED" sign. Here's the lesson here - next time you propose a bill, know your shit, so you don't end up looking stupid.
Wow, it's a tough call. Are Jim Prentice and Josée Verner completely incompetent, ignorant, and significantly below average intelligence...or are they merely coming across that way so they can avoid giving any answers?
I know 9 year olds who have read and seem to understand the contents of C-61 better than those two!
My previous comment didn't show up. All I have to say is this bill is a disgrace and a betrayal to our country, opening the door to lawsuits in the millions against teenagers. I hope you're proud of yourself Prentice. Down with Bill C-61!
Look at him avoid the questions that reveal he is opening the door for lawsuits of over a million dollars against Canadian citizens...especially against youth...by FOREIGN CORPORATIONS. Good job Prentice! You've now betrayed our country. I hope you're proud of yourself.
the media locks on dvds have actually lead me to download movies I already own. Maybe they should ban the locks instead because that would premote the purchase or rental of a DVD in order to allow for a better, faster way to get portable media
Why not just ban the locks which can cause the downloading of the materials. I have tried to record a Battlestar Galactica DVD which I have legally purchased onto my Archos DVR so I could watch it on my portable device but it unfortunately had a lock on it. I then had to download the season with torrents. They are going about this in totally the wrong way.
The government has folded under American pressure, like so many times before. They have no spine and their mandate comes from Washington, not the Canadian public.
Do you think 'our' politicians ever wonder why voter turnout is so low in this country? Do you think they even care? If today's news is any indication, the answer is no, on both accounts.
The true north is neither strong nor free, and you can thank our federal government for that.
Here we have more proof that the government in Ottawa has become embarassingly disconnected from the Canadians they claim to represent. No public consultation.... none. But if Ottawa really plans to fine the 1 in 5 Canadians who download videos, or the 50% that download music, I guess that would make sense, at least in their isolated bubble of a world.
Even if does pass, they are fools if they think it'll stop people from file sharing. Many software developers are already working on easy to use and totally anonymous file sharing systems just in case this bill does go through.
Also - why does Prentice insist on ignoring the serious criticisms leveled at him by copyright, internet and economics scholars? Doesn't he think what the experts have to say is important? How about what small Canadian innovators have to say?
This bill won't pass as long as Canadians realize now is the time to get out and vote for anybody but this jackass and the conservatives, Who the hell does this Jim Prentice think he is?
Now is the time to stand against our government and let them know we won't stand for this!
So it's "balanced" if a producer places a digital lock on media I purchase and can then turn around and sue me if I circumvent it to engage in my legal right to move it to a different medium. And I'm supposed to feel good because they can sue me for only $500.
So this means people might actually be sued for uploading media, thats bullshit! It is universally accepted to contribute to peer-to-peer servers and to share any media with anyone on the internet. It has been made an inevitable right, and will remain one. This bill can't pass.
Thanks for selling us out, Prentice. I, like every other individual in Canada, rather enjoy being automatically guilty and having to prove my innocence to the corporate culture hacks.
