I like your video, man! I wish I was at that place and that place you was that night when you recorded CSX crossing at night 1 and 2! Thank you for letting me remember this!
@cooldude2251 It's like a traffic signal. Green means go, yellow means proceed slowly, and red means stop. There's also flashing yellow and flashing green, which I'm not sure what those mean. I'm not 100% sure if that's accurate but I'm pretty sure that's what it means.
@cooldude2251 Just like when you drive you have to keep a safe distance from the car ahead of you, trains also need to keep a safe distance from the train ahead. In order to do this the tracks are divided into what is called blocks. There should only be one train in each block section. Each block starts and ends at a signal. The signals are there to tell the trains whether or not that block is clear.
@19crash84 The signals lights have three colors. Red, Yellow and Green. A red light means stop there is a train already on that block and to stop. Green means the train can go as the block is clear. Since it takes a long time to stop a train if the block is clear but the next one is not they will get a yellow light which means expect to stop at the end of the block/next signal. That way when a train gets to the next block and sees the red signal they are running maybe 2 or 3. mph.instead of 55
That's a pretty small crossing. Where I live, most of the railroad crossings along the MBTA routes have cantilever signals and often more than one bell installed. Most of the signals are Safetran, but some have WCH bells. Some of them have pretty short gates like the one here, but on crossings with frequent vehicular traffic, they have longer gates, and ones for pedestrians too. Prior to 1997, most of these crossings only had lights and a bell, but were then upgraded.
@wileyk209zback Interesting info there! Yeah, this is a pretty small crossing - there's no sidewalk at all, and the road is very narrow. It's really just used as a shortcut to avoid the downtown traffic signals the next block over. XD;
lol. I can hear the Amtrak and CN. and i'm about 3-5 miles from the track. its not hard to hear it in my house.the Track goes along the Lake on the Waterford / Clarkston line.
@briggsjos Dunno, but I am not fond of this horn. XD The MBTA trains seem to use it a lot, or at least I tend to hear it often while at work (I work nearby this crossing). My favourite horn is the K5LA. The horn heard here is pretty wimpy compared to it. XD
@AndrooUK Are you serious? This crossing gives you forever and a day... Literally 30 seconds from the time the gates are fully lowered (a pretty clear indication you probably shouldn't cross) until the train actually goes through. Any longer and people would intentionally go around the gates because it's TOO long!
@KatsukiLennox British and especially Asian crossings give far more warning - I've seen many give upwards of a full minute. (And this signal is 20 seconds from the fully lowered gate to the train entering the crossing.)
Why the 5 car train lately? I been seeing a few trains passing with only 5 cars, I thought they are suppose to have 7 on all trains? I did see one in Worcester waiting to depart at 10:30a not too long ago, and it had 8, I was shocked.
I think it would make more sense for the crossing bells to continue ringing when the gates are down. The railroad crossings on the Middleboro/Lakeville line used to stop the bells once the gates were completely lowered, but now they ring the whole time the signals are active
I noticed the bell stops ringing once the gates lower. The MBTA crossings in my area used to do that too, but then ring again when the gates rise. Now the bells ring the whole time the signals are active.
@radanju1 What the hell are you talking about? The bells go off automatically when the gates start to lower and shut off when the gate is almost down. It's all timed.
LOL I have no idea, all I know is that the signal had a bracket that had "Safetran Systems Corp" stamped on it. I know a lot about vehicular traffic signals, but nothing about train signals, bells, and gates. XD
I am 99% certain that it is. You can kind of tell by looking at it at the end of the video too. No other railroad crossing bell makes that high-pitched of a sound.
lol good question, hadn't noticed that before. I'm not really sure why the doors would be open. However, I'm pretty sure the interior doors (between cars) are kept shut until arriving at the stations.
I was just wondering how do you get to Cherry St. I know were Main St. is I know were the station is I know Cherry St. is between but how do you get there?
From Main St, turn onto Pleasant St, then turn left onto Tilton Ave, which ends at Cherry St (Cherry St comes out to Main, but is one-way at that point and you can't enter from that side)
From Union St, you turn onto Summer St and turn immediately onto Cherry St.
My Aunt lives at the apartment buildings you were at filming this video, everytime I watch it, it reminds me of me and her comming to watch the trains.
The Main St gates are for two lanes in each direction. Cherry St is only one lane in each direction, so it's not necessary to have longer gates.
Don't forget, gates should only be long enough to just block off the lanes coming into the intersection. If a car gets stuck in the middle, you don't want to have a gate on the other side too, because then they'll be trapped. ;)
Yes, I see your point, but the short gate gives the impacent driver a chance to try and drive around them. There are pleanty of videos on here showing those idiots doing that. The gate should go halfway across the opposite lane. That way if you're trapped you can still swerve around and get out.
What, is that unusual to you? x3; Trains go either direction, some trains are symmetrical and you can't tell whether they're going forwards or backwards X3
Good video, not a fan of wrrs mini bells, but still a good video
