He admits he set Kitty "on a pedestal" because he thought she was so attractive that she could have married many other men, but she married him. Kitty disappointed him so badly because of his high expectations of her contrasting with the reality which was that she was just an ordinary woman. She fell for Charlie because she was bored with her life with Walter. I don't think she was stupid or vapid, just unwise.
@linneahope hm..yeah, also the circumstance they were both in..you can feel her realizing that in a place so far from anything..they only have each other to rely on..if they hadn't been given the opportunity to test themselves and finally accept one another and begin the long process of ''love'', they'd only end up in separate bedrooms early on..Kitty wasn't so 'unwise'..she was merely..not willing to give walter a real chance, above all she is the ordinary woman.

I think it's sad how these people are religiously blind (the bodies' souls) and how it affects their hygiene (that infected water). That's why they are suffering from this epidemic.
Like the Egyptians who used excrement in medicines and other remedies.
Their poor conditions of living or religious traditions make them ignorant when it comes to hygiene.
There are definately some beautiful landscape scenes for sure. I wonder where they filmed this. I didn't think there were many unspoiled and beautiful spots left in the China of today.
