How come nobody ever mentions Michael Rutherford from Genesis in this conversation. Go back listen to Foxtrot and think about it. I thought Squire was like a God when I was teaching myself to play bass in the 70's!
Great music will hold up for ever. Fish Out of Water is one of the most under-rated, masterworks of the 70's and still sounds fresh today. Amazing. This performance gives me chills, witness the pure brilliance of Chris Squire. Hallelujah!
Thank you for the courage and generosity to video this performance and post it. Chris and Yes mean so much to me as a musician growing up and developing in the Seventies. They gave so many of us something to shoot for in terms of standard. The bar was raised high with Chris and the boys. His smile at the end of the song says it all.
Dear Iyesmuseum, it was Lee JackSON who was in The Nice as bassist and singer. It was Andrew JackMAN who played piano and orchestrated Squire's album "Fish Out of Water".
Oops. Yes, I agree. When I typed this note 3 years ago, I must've been tired! I had just listened to Emerlist DavJack by The Nice. I meant The Selfs. Thanks for setting the story straight. The same thing happened to Jon Anderson in an L.A. interview when the D.J. asked Jon about his time in The Move (which was the next guest's band - Jeff Lynne of ELO)
Happens to the best of us. Oh, another slight notice on my part, if you will indulge me. Emerlist DavJack (or full title being "The Thoughts of......") was by the Nice from their Autumn To Spring album featuring Davy O'List on Lead Guitar...unless it was also recorded by someone else I'm not familiar with, like the Selfs you mention.
The album I reference was "The Thoughts of Emerlist DavJack" 1973, which does include the same titled track. I actually don't have "Autumn To Spring". I'll have to get it!
i just want to say i will always admire and respect this guy. :) he's responsible for me wanting to learn bass nearly 30 years ago and he's been a major inspiration to me. love you, Chris!!
Benoit David is fantastic stand in for Jon Anderson. I know the other guys are very proud of his contribution. Hey if trever Horn can front yes it's safe to say the other 4 can carry anyone. But that being said, Benoit David stands on his own merit. As for this video; just awesome. Chris is the bench mark by which great bassists will be measured. HE'S the IRREPLACEABLE ONE. And to my knowledge, there has never been a YES tour without him.
i agree with you 100% about Chris, but i think them getting a guy off YouTube(like Journey did) was just wrong and an insult to John. :( sorry, just my opinion.
Yes indeed, it was Lee Jackson who was in The Nice as bassist and singer. Andrew Jackman orchestrated and played piano on Squire's "Fish Out of Water" album. From my understanding Andrew and Chris knew each other from school days when they were in a choir.
Better recordings of this performance? Perhaps. You won't find an alternate live performance of this song at any other venue. Slower - probably because that's what he felt like doing. Notice that his voice isn't what it was 30+ years ago. Everybody slows down.
There is a studio version Chris performed with Billy Sherwood around the same time as this concert. It's a professional video released by Chris Squire, himself. It's great.
It's ok. We all get old and I wasn't giving him grief over it, just a little perplexed at the key when Billy's version was in the right one. Of course he had Billy there to cover the high bits and didn't at this Rickenbacker Anni thing. Thanks for sharing. If it's a tad ragged I doubt it's Chris' fault anyway.
My inspiration when I was younger. A great player, one of the best. He is the backbone of YES sound in the same way as YES wouldn't be Yes without Anderson, Wakeman, Howe and one of either Bruford or White. Listen to DRAMA or AWBH to see what's missing there.
I was there at the HOB (Rickenbacker 75th), met Chris before the show. He also played Roundabout. I remember thinking two things...he has HUGE hands (mine are big, his are HUGE), and he really pounds away at the notes he's playing. Can't tell this video, but man, he bangs that bass. Picked everything down there at the bridge, hard. Got a cool photo of me and Chris, along with a poster he signed for me. Susanna Hoffs with Matthew Sweet and The Smithereens also played, Lemmy was in the audience.
It was 1999, The Ladder Tour. Heard nothing but great things about it *sigh* A I said, will not happen again. Get well Jon and come back Yes to Orlando!
What a cool find. Yes actually did come to our HOB here in Orlando some years ago and I missed it. Matter of fact they have come here a few times in the last 15 yrs or so and just had to be satisfied with the reviews in the paper. I was so hoping for this go around and then Jon got sick. Hope he recovers well and they come here. I will NOT miss it this time. The HOB is ready and waiting boys! Thanks yesmuseum for an excellent upload!
ok, this is a wee off subject...but, I don't think I've ever seen Tony Levin and Gordon Liddy in the same room at the same time hehehe...carry on (I'm done with my foolishness)
oh yeah, I dig Squire too, even though that's totally not my tone at all...I'm more of the upright sounds ala a Hofner with nickel flat wounds
Chris is greatness! Other bass players..Rinus Gerritson, Trevor Bolder, Geddy Lee, Jack Bruce, John Wetton, Tony Levi, Chris Glen, John Entwistle, Greg Lake, Pete Agnew,Gary Thain, Mark Andes...too many!
Squire wouldn't wipe his ass with fucking john taylor he and duran duran are the musical equivalent of what you wipe from the bottom of your shoes! Gee buddy I always thought 8 year olds were smarter than you seem to be !
whens yes going to get rock-n-roll hall of fame...or something..there better than any other group..master story tellers..you feel as though you are there....
Those are some of my favorites too...I liked Geezer Butler too. They are old school players. They never really got into that slap and pop funky style like a lot of the new guys do. I play too and have never really mastered that either...but haven't tried that much I guess.
I would say Jack has been more of an influence like you said. I think he's better at Jazz and stuff and improvising on heavy rock and blues..Squire is real melodic.
Chris Squire says he would like to be known as the 'lead bass player' of Yes, he deserves that position because his playing has always been much more than just 'half of the Rhythm Section'. Are there any modern bass players that bring this much to a band's sound? (OK excluding Sting :) )
Thanks for posting...Never thought I'd see this live. The band was syncing for the video of these tracks when the album first came out 30 years ago. Silently Falling would be amazing too-now that he re-mastered Fish Out Of Water I'm hoping he tours solo before the Yes 4oth Anniversary gigs next year. Great Stuff!!
I really feel sad when I read all the critical "he's so old" and "it's too slow" comments.
