This version is great! BUT I like the other version better from the Complete Reprise Recordings box set. There are 2 versions on there. Still, this is really good!!
Although I'm certain that this song at some level is a tribute to Billie Holiday, it actually was part of the theme album "Watertown". Sinatra recorded that album in 1969, and all the songs are about a working man whose wife has left him, leaving him alone with their two kids. It was probably Sinatra's least commercially successful album, but now stands as a true classic, and an early source of inspiration for later rock-oriented concept albums.
Thank you so much for putting this on Youtube. It is a hard song to find and it is easily Sinatra's most beautiful , especially when you understand the poignancy of his tribute to Billie Holliday. Such power, such emotion, your heart breaks with his.
I'll admit it, it took awhile for this song to grow on me...but I just couldn't ignore how beautiful this song is, both lyrically and melodically, and Sinatra is just stunning in his delivery.
Sinatra did two versions of this while doing the Bob Gaudio & Jake Holmes project 'Watertown.'
Frank Sinatra produced these himself. He spoke of visiting Billy Holiday in a New York hospital towards the end of her life and I swear he relives that memory here. Hear:
Thanks for posting this beautiful song by Frank. I love all his songs , his music is timeless. His music will live forever way beyond say, Justin ,Britney & yes even Lady GaGa. Frank , the greatest entertainer of the 20th century & always !!!! & also, the great Bobby Darin, !!
