I watched virtually every match of that world cup. I recall Italy didn't win any of their opening 3 group games and were truly boring. They got better and better but really Brazil who had played supremely in their first 4 games (4 wins and some brilliant goals and entertainment) made some terrible mistakes for Rossi to punish. Brazil's Serginho was not a top class forward and the goalie was poor-average, too. Otherwise their players were exceptionally good!)

Having said it, I agree with you that both Waldir Perez and Serginho weren't playing so well then but, believe you me. Both of them had been considered the very best on their position at the time in Brazil. The goalie was a true wall and the forward the best scorer. Both at São Paulo FC! Well, the goalkeeper wasn't good at all and that's one of the reason Brazil didn't win: this is the real accident of destiny, that the goalkeeper of that wonderful team was not good enough! Brazil were absolutely incredible during this competition, and the match between them and Italy was undoubtedly one of the best WC games, but if Italy hadn't won, we wouldn't have had the pleasure of Tardelli's greatest ever goal celebration in the final.
