  • Is there any way to slow the lyrics down more? Might keep the audience intrigued.

  • Newfies are even more... different than them Irish. Also, why does such a badly synched video have such great reviews?

  • @ENDiTunes because were not a bunch of asses, just here to listen to a great song. the sound quality is good and thats all that matters me son

  • Look, all arguing aside, the fact is that this is just not an Irish song. It was written by Johnny Burke who lived on Prescott Street here in St. John's Newfoundland. He was of Irish descent, but as far as I know he never even set foot on Irish soil. All of the references to places, like George Street, are places here in St. John's. Johnny Burke rarely gets paid the respect he deserves for the songs he wrote, many remain favourites like this one or the Kelligrews Soiree.

  • Does not matter where it's from......Tis a Great Irish Tune...played all over Irish America.....KFG

  • Great song! Shame about the text speed.

  • YOU AT B'YS! it be a Newfoundland song but what odds, Ireland was once our home so cheers to the b'ys out on the other island, cross the north atlantic freeze box!

  • this is so funny hahah

  • This is not an Irish song. It's in fact a Newfoundland song.

  • i am sorry i have to be a 12 year old on this

" the bottle was passed around and everybody was felling gay"

i am sorry for being 12 again but they way the guy said it with so much enthusiasm is just too funny

  • @TheMuffinator100 Gay just means happy you tit xD

  • @FreedomSaoirse hahaha makesure they pass the booze out firsttt

  • @jalapenopringle Lucky you darlin..Sounds like deep south of america with a complex...Take it easy sweetheart.

May the wind always be at your back....Up tha Dubs and any bastard that,s interested

  • Go Irish wakes... Thats whats happening whe i die, i want people drinking and partying, not crying, and i want to be propped up in my casket in the corner with a bottle of jameson with me.

  • This gets a thumbs down simply because you don't know how to sync the lyrics and the audio.

  • Why do I imagine Phoebe, from Friends, singing this?

  • lol this song is refering to the bands lead singer

  • i hope that this happens when i die. lol

  • either the lyrics are too slow...or im too drunk to keep up !

  • "oh the night that Osama died is a night I'll never forget some of the americans got loaded drunk and they ain't been sober yet"

  • Am I right to assume "gay" is meant to be "happy" ?

  • @LCxCZ Yes. Gay was successfully adopted by Homosexuals because of it's original 'happy' definition. An Atheist movement is attempting to do the same by renaming themselfs 'Brights'

  • @melhupby Thank you for the insight. :)

  • @LCxCZ yea, before it was ever used for homosexuals it was used as an exclimation of happiness

  • speed up the scroll and it will be fine, but as it is, even if you know the words it is dumb u have to wait for the right thing to show up.

  • God, I love this song. Work on your timing though. I can sing along just fine, but some others cant lol.

  • this a song is used to represent the night that Paddy Murphy died and Murphy was a SAE in the 1920's and was an alcohol runner during the prohibition era and was shot by a brother of SAE and one week out every year were SAE celebrates they night that he was shot. now this is what the song is really about

  • Good song. Hope everyone had a great St. Patricks Day

  • go on the paddy murphy!!!!

  • You suck at timing.. .The words are supposed to go WITH the song.... Not before or after.

  • who's singing this song?

  • @ladyScarlett88 Great Big Sea

  • My Grandfathers name is Patrick Murphy....way to go bys!! Sing'er up!!

  • god I haven't heard this in about 2 or 3 years, why'd I ever stop listening to it, good times mate, good times

  • It is a Newfoundland song, but Aye we are Irish desendants so i guss the Irish can have a tag on it to :P

  • BTW, as far as I know, the artist who preforms this song is from Newfoundland. If I have relatives who brought this song over from Ireland in the late 1800s, I'm gonna say this originated in Ireland. Just for the record, I'm sure my great grandparents had no idea who "Great Big Sea" was. They weren't even around then.

  • When I was a child, during the holidays my grandfather would get drunk and sing this song. He would always start off the song by saying, "This is a very, very, very sad story." His parents immigrated from Cork, Ireland. Definitely my favorite childhood song!

  • @meggles650 thats unreal!! :)

  • my name is patrick murphy :/

  • @oOoAeroMonkeyoOo Want this played on your funeral then? :p

  • @onemorefromdk lol would be a idea lol

  • the timing is way off

  • its not irish its newfoundland

  • Whilst i do quite like yanks you wouldnt have a clue about ireland in a real world or even irish view as your entire opinion is made up by a few ill informed and/or bigoted 5th generation irish or the films

  • how is the name of this band >-< :D

i have fell in love in this song *-*

  • @ReneeEire Great Big Sea

"By Jees there is" replies Paddy

"What appears to be the problem?" Asks the vet

"My goldfish is epeleptic" explains Paddy

"I'm afraid there appears to be nothing wrong with your fish" the vet says

"Hold on" says Paddy "I havent even taken it out of the water yet"

  • @JEWmeroUNO

  • Hell, it's not Irish. It's from Newfoundland like 234432234432 said. The artist playing the song is GREAT BIG SEA

  • This is A Newfie Song. Always has been.

  • Erin go bragh!

(by the way I am from Slovakia :-) )

  • Howling at the moon... you crazies.. just enjoy a freaking good song will ya? Music is universal..so get with the program.. have a beer, relax.. enjoy.

  • I saw this on some movie about reporters a while back. It's epic!

  • WHO GIVES A FUCK WHERE IT COMES FROM!

  • would of been better if the lyrics kept up with the song

  • Fail on the Lyrics and the Scrolling. they were wrong and off with the music.

  • Being a real Newfie i'd love to take pride for this song but as morman mark said, it's actually irish ( i'm both so i dont really care) anyway ty for posting this, i got to use it for an english project

  • @Googlplexify The Night Paddy Murphy Died is a popular Newfoundland folk song. It was written by Johnny Burke (1851-1930), a popular St. John's balladeer. Nothing Irish about it.

  • @seethe42 Actually, It is a NL song, influenced by the Celtic and Irish. INFLUENCED. so dont say "nothing" Irish about it.. cause that would be rubbish..

  • If you make a video with lyrics you should care about the speed of the lyrics passing by and if they match the lyrics in the song...Great song but the video is a great big fail!

  • Newfie! Yes b'y! :) Loves me some newfie music. true blood newfie right here!

  • Who's version of the song is this? To dumb to figure it out myself.

  • @marlaxia1

    Its Great Big Sea

  • asume

  • check out the legend of paddy murphy...pretty sweet story. there are several versions, and they are all awesome. we remember paddy with a weeklong event...definitely a great time

  • @oaknightshockey1 it's patty not paddy

  • who really gives shit really IT'S A FU CKING SONG SO WHAT

    xD

  • I'm from Newfoundland and have been singing these songs for many years. This is not a Newfoundland song. This is an Irish American song. Just like Miss Murphy's chowder. These were old plays performed in the Boston states. Many NL bands have recorded it over the years but that doesn't make it ours, SORRY.........

  • I am from newfoundland as well...and if its not a newfoundland song, then why do they mention george street, and sundance saloon? that bar and street is in St. Johns Newfoundland, not ireland. However it isnt really an arguement. most of the culture in newfoundland comes from ireland, scotland, and england. celtic music is pretty universal to eastern Canada.

  • I got drunk with these by's when I was 13 and they were still touring the east coast. Good to see some east coast boy's getting some money.

  • this song is Newfoundland, not irish, although we do have irish heritage

  • @Randomnesss2008 its commonly thought of as Irish because of who the song is about Paddy Murphy was a Irish gangster and bootlegger during prohibition. So in a way its both.

  • This is a newfie song yes, But Great Big Sea (the people who play this song) Use some "sea shanties, which draw from the island's 500-year-old Irish, English, and French heritage".

  • This is a newfie song. not irish!

  • Nu Fundland!!!

  • @Guiness1988

RIGHT ON!!! finally someone knows how to say it right!

  • found this song from the movie State of Play

  • NOT IRISH, NEWFIE GET IT RIGHT!

  • @start690193 this just the great big sea version ... fiddlers green sang it too ... SO ITS IRISH ^^

  • Some o' the b'yes got loaded drunk.....

  • hahahaha evry man was feelin' gay!!!! lol

  • Are you 10 years old?

  • you don't know the right meaning of "feeling gay" right?

  • means

    gay (old)=happy

    gay(new)=loves/dates/marrys another boy/male

  • @Sabbathfan21 gay means happy IDIOT FAKE AND GAY

  • @theMMAarmy damn right!

  • @davidhompsonYT

Its not irish or american, it's a Newfoundland song.

  • @234432234432 fisherman song lol

  • @234432234432 actually its canadian

this is sung by great big sea.

  • @Chabby1015 technically its a celtic newfoundland song.. not rly canadian

  • @supermoocow2 news flash newfoundland is part of canada now where have you been under a rock? so technically it is canadian

  • @supermoocow2 Tell me, where's Newfoundland?

  • @migster44 Eastern part of Canada

  • @flash254 (Atlantic to be specific :P) And yet that guy said it's not Canadian xD

(For the record knew where it is)

  • @234432234432 its irish-american you gimp

  • @irishrebel92

    No. Its not.

  • @irishrebel92 Wow, hahaha you're a moron. "George Street" is in Newfoundland. Newfoundland song.

  • @WingLee51

Granted, there is a George Street in Newfoundland .... but there also several George Streets in Ireland, England, Wales, Scottland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and so on ...

Not doubting that it is a Newfoundland song ..... but your argument is silly.

  • @lilkitchentralee It's Great Big Sea. Enough said.

  • @irishrebel92

Irish American? What's that supposed to be? There are thousands of miles in between the two countries. And in all fairness, i don't want to be associated with the Yanks. Irish is Irish and American is American. And that song is from newfoundland.

  • @lilkitchentralee Irish-American is a pretty distinct sub-culture here in the States. Not quite Irish, maybe, but not fully Americanized either. Almost everybody in the US is "from" somewhere else so hyphenated cultural identities are fairly common, but Irish-American - I think - continues to be one of the most distinct. Maybe because there are so many of us (technically I'm not Irish-American, because I'm not a US citizen.)

And Newfoundland, I'm fairly convinced, is a suburb of Ireland. :p

  • @234432234432 The maritime music was heavily formed from the early settlers (Irish) it has a celtic swing to it and its very martime-irish, just like the Newfoundland people.

  • @CGAUDIODJSERVICES

I don't disagree with you there, but this song was originally written by a Newfoundlander, and this version along w
