@Lili54521 Hiragana is the standard writing system for Japanese words. Katakana is used to spell foreign words that are not Japanese. It's a whole another alphabet devoted to borrowed words. Imagine if English had another alphabet but, same sounds to spell words like "Shampoo" (Hindi - chāmpo चाँपो)" Also notice it's not just Katakana, Kanji is in there too for China, Korea, and Japan!

so the " - " symbol means the symbol before it is said longer and repeated, or what?

the - makes the previous vowel sound twice as long. si- = sii

If im not mistaken, to stretch the vowels in Japanese you can do the following;

bo-ru = booru = ball

suki- = sukii = ski

So it pretty much doubles the vowel before it.

e- = ee

i- = ii

etc... Hope that helps

yeah there is a line sortof like a long dash that you can put into a word to lengthen the vowel however i beleive it is only with katakana. you wouldn't(not formally anyways that I know of) write it with hiragana

also with those stretched vowles be careful peoples, don't lengthen them if they aren't and vice versa....it matters

A simple way to find out what is the country name is to go to wikipedia and search for the country then you look for other languages.

Click on 日本語 and you got the name... But yeah it will probably be writen in katanaka... Then again! use your brain people!
