this is one of those songs that I hear at just the right (or possibly wrong) point in my life. It is a very sad song to begin with but bring in the nostalgia factor and I cry everytime I hear this song.
What Jack do you think of when you hear the line "brother of the famous Jack", There are so many famous Jacks. For some reason I always think of Jack the Ripper.
This song will forever remind me of the summer of '96, just after graduation. Working at a shitty job, but driving around at lunch and enjoying listening to this album with a now-departed dear friend.
Graduated that same year then went into the air force - where I first heard this song and it was the same for me...memories of sitting playing guitar and singing with friends - writing epic ballads of this type...memories harsh and soft all at once.
I remember listening to this song as a 14 year old boy, wondering what this life will have to offer to me...the song is beautiful...and I agree: timeless!
My brother put this song on a mixed tape (an actual tape) when I moved out to California almost 10 years ago. I moved to Santa Cruz and really understood what this song meant there. The photo montage makes me miss it there. Thanks Cracker.
Best band ever. And for those who have not seen them live. I can not begin to tell you what you are missing. Please go you wont regret it and I will bet you wont go just once given another chance
The (greatest) last rock band on the planet!!! ...
this song is about the The giant dipper in san diego (mission beach) they thought it was call the big dipper when David wrote the song .. D'oh .... please see the link about this song at world wide web crackersoul dot com .... you can read the real story behind this great tune ... peace
Is that Monterey? I think I recognize the volleyball courts. I once went there for a visit about 10 years ago. Loved the aquarium with the fishes overhead.
Never heard of it during my Santa Cruz days tho those were after the CVB days there. I imagine any one of a number of Santa Cruz coffeeshops (Pergolehsi? sp?) where you just hung out and "watched the world go by"
I wonder if they will do Big Dipper at Flavorfest (Chicago). I'm 5 hours away, but would go just to hear that... I have a nephew there and we could ride along the bike path by the lake.
ditto!

I bought carrot juice at Kroger today, just because I was sitting on the Kroger steps. Maybe tomorrow I'll get myself a new tattoo.

The live version on the 'Hello Cleveland' CD is probably one of the best live performances I've ever heard, from any band-

one starts to think about how fast life goes, important to stop and take time to sit down with a coffee and watch the world go by...

No, that's Santa Cruz. The Giant Dipper (Big Dipper in this song) coaster is on the Boardwalk there.

Thanks. I watched it again and now it makes more sense to me... Is Cafe Xeno's a real place--or is he referring to Zeno's paradox? Maybe both?
