I used to have a 2000 Mazda MPV with a 2.5L Ford Duratec in it, lasted me well over 200,000 kilometers (124,000 miles). Probably the most reliable engine I've ever had. Then, gave it up for a BMW X5, also an amazing car. I didn't know I would be so satisfied with a Ford engine.
The Edge is quick, and I've never driven an X5 so I can't compare, but the two vehicles are in completely different leagues. even if it is .2sec faster than the 3.0 x5. the handling, looks, ride quality, etc. are all going to be lacking.

Well I have a Ford EDGE and a Toyota Highlander Hybrid, my Highlander can do 0-60 in 5.85 seconds, yea I made a video. But the EDGE can only do it in 7.9 seconds. It's not that fast.
well they are rated at approximately the same amount of hp, but they most likely tested the lightest possible edge with fwd against the x5 3.0 with AWD and weighs nearly 5,000 lbs. I am sure the scenario will change once both cars get over 70...
Ok , I just bought an Edge and already beat four X5's with 3.0L's in them , and paid at least 20 grand less than what you BMW guys pay. Oh, by the way , Ford ISNT competing with your 4.8 so why bring it up , go to the Porsche Cayenne guys and line up a Cayenne S with your 4.8 and floor it and see what happens.

My current car, an '02 pontiac, is 5 years old and has about 60K on it and I've only replaced the window regulator. Anyway since you keep talking about research why don't you go do some - BMW has worse reliability ratings than most domestics.

My Mom had an old mid 90's astro van until 2002 w/ 250K mi. My uncle in NY still drives an '85 bonneville w/ the original engine and trans and 175K. The X5 is a seven-seater SUV (meaning, off-road) on a truck chassis. The Edge is a 5-seater hatchback (basically) on a car chassis.
Since the Edge is not meant for off-roading, it would be better compared to a 3-series sport wagon, which would also seat 5, but would blow it away in street performance.
I have nothing in particular against Ford, but this is like saying a person shouldn't buy an RV because it'll lose in a drag race to a Boxster.

I think it is silly how the BMW guys get offended by a 25K Ford. I owned an M3, and even though it spent a considerable amount of time in the shop (falling trim pieces to valve noise and the infamous crankshaft failure), I still LOVED my M3. i saw one in person the other day. the qualty material ford uses is awful, leather is optional, automatic climate control, and all this other stuff, like all wheel drive, is all optional. which is all standard in the bimmer. i'd go for the bimmer for sure

Well I have a Ford EDGE and a Toyota Highlander Hybrid, my Highlander can do 0-60 in 5.85 seconds, yea I made a video. But the EDGE can only do it in 7.9 seconds. It's not that fast.

well they are rated at approximately the same amount of hp, but they most likely tested the lightest possible edge with fwd against the x5 3.0 with AWD and weighs nearly 5,000 lbs. I am sure the scenario will change once both cars get over 70...

Ok , I just bought an Edge and already beat four X5's with 3.0L's in them , and paid at least 20 grand less than what you BMW guys pay. Oh, by the way , Ford ISNT competing with your 4.8 so why bring it up , go to the Porsche Cayenne guys and line up a Cayenne S with your 4.8 and floor it and see what happens.

And yes of course things broke on them but no vehicles, not even your precious imports, are immune to that. You said that the lifespan of a domestic vehicle is 3-5 years until everything goes to hell. Well thats simply not true.

On my '90 buick the only things that needed to be replaced other than wear and tear items was 1 alternator, the intake manifold gasket, and the power steering pump, and it was 15 years old and had over 200K miles on it when I finally got rid of it. My current car, an '02 pontiac, is 5 years old and has about 60K on it and I've only replaced the window regulator. Anyway since you keep talking about research why don't you go do some - BMW has worse reliability ratings than most domestics.

Where the hell do you get your information mtechfan? I just recently got rid of my '90 buick regal with over 200K mi - original engine and trans. My Mom had an old mid 90's astro van until 2002 w/ 250K mi. My uncle in NY still drives an '85 bonneville w/ the original engine and trans and 175K. I have too many examples to list here. 3 - 5 yrs? that's just not true.

The X5 is a seven-seater SUV (meaning, off-road) on a truck chassis. The Edge is a 5-seater hatchback (basically) on a car chassis.
Since the Edge is not meant for off-roading, it would be better compared to a 3-series sport wagon, which would also seat 5, but would blow it away in street performance.
I have nothing in particular against Ford, but this is like saying a person shouldn't buy an RV because it'll lose in a drag race to a Boxster.

Yes, the BMW, overall is superior to the Edge, but you expect that when you are paying almost twice the price. However, the new Acura MDX is cheaper and better than the new X5, so BMW is no longer superior.

I think it is silly how the BMW guys get offended by a 25K Ford. I owned an M3, and even though it spent a considerable amount of time in the shop (falling trim pieces to valve noise and the infamous crankshaft failure), I still LOVED my M3. For the guy who made the comment about rich/poor people, don't mock those who cannot affords a 40K+ car; their are more important things to spend your money on for some.

Bmw's quality always increases, it doesn't decrease. Personally we took the new x5 and bought a new 911 turbo, so what. the point is, a couple of beers and a ford doesn't make a bmw. marginal benefit of an x5 is higher than a ford edge for me. both the american cars and german rides improve themselves over years. but americans will never keep up with germans.

i saw one in person the other day. the qualty material ford uses is awful, leather is optional, automatic climate control, and all this other stuff, like all wheel drive, is all optional. which is all standard in the bimmer. i'd go for the bimmer for sure
