@triclops8 do you live in an apartment , town house, or a house? This is a fairly loud amp (even on 2!), obviously the more you crank it, the better saturation and tone as you're starting to drive the power amp and not relying on pre amp. IMO, i think it sounds decent at low volume , but then again low volume for me is 2.5 which is most likely too loud for an apartment or town house.
@tomiclav depends what you like in his playing, if you're into his harmonics chords, etc, check out eric johnson, lenny breau, if you like his blues style, srv,
This is the all-time great amp to go with a tele or strat in my opinion. The reissues don't quite sound the same though. They've got that same darn ice-pick to the brain sound as most of the other newer Fender tube amps. This is hard to believe, but that little Super Champ XD Fender came out with a couple of years ago has an amp voice that just about nails this 59 Bassman. It's actually much closer sounding to an old Bassman than the reissue Bassmans in my opinion.
It sounds very nice but not quite like the old one I think..I don't know..I've never heard an old combo anly an old state....I don't know if they are supposed to sound in the same way or are built diferently...
I have had mine for six years. Love it. But I figured out the real secret to this amp is hooking up an attenuator to it so you can saturate the tubes without blowing everybody's ear drums out. That made all the difference in the world for me.
How do single coil guitarists usually set this beast? Go into the normal or bright input? Which input did carl go into? and did he bridge the channels ?
I've heard they don't react too well to multiple instruments playing through them at the same time. I'm sure it would still work for either/or, but once you've got two instruments playing through the same speakers, you get a lot of frequency canellation (the cone can't move in and out at the same time, ya know.?.). Good luck, tho'!
I've seen plenty of demo's of guitars played through the Bassman but haven't seen any posted with a Bass guitar yet... Isn't that what it was orignally built for ?
its not really used by bass players, modern bass amps are far different, most bass players these days don't want a sound that breaks up.. unless they don't really know what they are doing : )
this amp was invented at around a similar time that the electric bass was invented, the instrument soon took a drastic turn away from this kind of amplifier.
No it was a 62 black-face. These amps were not made to have multiple instruments at the same time. You can use maybe two at a time but not really what it was made for.
what vver says is correct. 50w for a bass just isn't enough. so that's when the bass players went "ugh, can't use this amp anymore", threw it away, then the guitar players came in and said "ooo free amp!" in the words of Greg Koch
@BROOKS39 ya, but you have to consider how you wouldn't be able to take it far past half-way on the amp without encountering overdrive. I have a '66 50W Bassman: it's good till 4-5, and then you hit breakup. Back in the day, you'd use 2-3 as a bass player to achieve sound pressure, and your guitarist would be use 1-2 running harder to cut through in the midrange and highs. The reissue's apparently part-for-part the same, but it's advertised for guitar because that's what it's known for.
how long does the amp stay clean? I really like it's clean tone, and I'd be interested in getting one, but I don't want it to give me much break up at loud(er) volumes.
@DOOBAGE69 the way mine is set up, it starts to break up around 5 when bridged, but 6-7 when it's one ch. only. (i have a 12ay7 in v1 and a gz34 rectifier.) you can hear what bluesy leads sound like through it if you check out my channel.)
he's a session guitarist & tours as well...I know he just signed with Vox Amps as I seen him in there when picking up info on the new Night Train. Hope that helps, those 2 below me are right..Carl Va-something
Not without a pedal haha. This amp is incredible for classic rock tons and super versatile but anything too heavy it wont do without a bunch of pedals.
A bassman can take it all!!! but you need the right pedal for it. Its got a great clean and overdrive, but thats as far as it will go :-). Buddy Guy plays a bassman, pearl jam also uses Fender Bassman. It's just the best basis for any tone. But as said, get some great pedals :-). cheers
In short: no. Even if you can figure out a way of running whatever external preamp into it, don't. For a lot less money you can pickup a used recto or 5150 or something that's actually designed for the sort of music you want to play.
well yes.. if you get a good pedal in front of it
but if you wanna seriously play and perform that kinda music, playing through a bassman.. just... isnt right... it wasnt designed for anything other than clean and classic overdrive
Even with a pedal your better off going with something else.
Adam uses some pretty unique gear to get his sound and a vintage amp isn't going to replicate it all that well at all.
Distortion IMO sounds better through a tube amp than a SS anyday but I'm not into that kind of music much at all so maybe that tinny penguin in a blender sound is what they're going for.
I'm just not too sure the 4 10's would be up to the task of any heavy distortion; it'd probably get the blues... ;)
Thanks for taking the time to do a very nice and well done demo on the BM. Only negative I have is I'd like to have seen a bit longer video, showing setting on both the strat and amp. but still give it a 5 star. Thanks
I was looking at one of these, but thinking about the blues deville 410 for $800 AUD less which also has reverb, and the bassman reissue has a printed circuit board unlike the originals, any suggestions?
the blues deville has more features as it was originally designed as a guitar amp, whereas the bassman was obviously originally marketed as a bass amp. the deville does have some extra features, but it doesn't sound as good as the bassman imo.
The Blues Deville is a nice amp; I used one for a brief period. It doesn't sound exactly like a tweed Bassman, but it can approximate a similar tone. It really depends on how picky you are.
I know you're right they do usually have the originals in this videos, but look carefully at this bassman. It has a rubber handle, the ones in 59' were built with a leather one, it may be a replacement, but that handle is the exact same one on the reissue. I could be wrong.
This is a reissue 59' Bassman but some real 1959-1960 Bassmans had the dogbone handle stock, although not too many. Also, the original Bassman cabinet was narrower than the reissue and taller than the reissue.
i originally bought a fender blues deville but it had a problem so I shipped it back
when I recieved the new blues devillle (or what was supposed to be a blues deville) I opened up the box and it turned out to be this amp. this was the amp I originally wanted but I couldn't afford it. I would definetly recommend this amp (meaning the bassman) for anyone in the market, u won't be disappointed
I like the concept of this show, but I hate the hosts. They're the kinda douchy guitarists that won't shut the fuck up about how great Strats are and how gay they are for Eric Clapton.
It can really get you the fuzzy Hendrix type of mellow distortion, and it cleans up perfectly. There was this other amp, also aimed for bass type of things it was black. That and the 59 bassman
i have the choice of ether a secondhand 59bassman of a mate or a new blues deluxe. i play in a rock and roll band but also play classic rock. any ideas?
i would go for the bassman cuz its bigger and got a little more vintage tone than the blues deluxe which i think has better features but tonewise nearly the same but bassmans more bassmanish
id take the bassman. the blues deluxe is a brilliant amp, but the bassman was just something special. the bassman is one of the top 5 greatest amplifiers in history, up there with the plexi, the reverb deluxe, the ac30, etc.
hey i gotta question: i have a blues deville amp, which ive been told its like a reinterpretation of this beatiful amp, and i want to know if i can play a bass trough it without messin it up thanks¡
i have a blues deluxe. i love it but it dosen't have the headroom i'd like. How does the blues deville sound clean? does yours have those alnico 10" speakers?
What difference does it make if someone is gay? For the record, there aren't many gay men that are knowledgable about guitars, nor are there many that can play as well as these two.
Sorry about my comment - i really like like Fender amps and guitars, but i do NOT like the way those two guys presents it, especially some of their comments... I was trying to make fun of them. But I have to say, both are really good players.
you forgot to say "remember, even with this setup you wont sound exactly like me....you have to practice...." i almost thought i could sound like that for a second!
This guy Carl was on a Video Guitar School called Guitar 101! I remember it like it was yesterday. I was learning form it! He had some good, very fine samples!
They sound like that becasue you neeed to crank them up. A tube rectified bassman will compress really eveny for amazing and smooth overdrive. If it is not tube rectified, you will not get it to souund like that.
I own one. Original circuit and trannies. The(replacement 70s)alnico speakers actually came out of Leo's shop within Musicman... It sounds spectacular with a p-bass, especially with flat wound strings. With a guitar, it records well... but really needs to be gigged in a larger club... it needs to get so loud before it really gives up the serious magic. Once you get there it is the perfect classic rock amp. It plays really dimensional jazz w/a standalone fender reverb. Have one handmade for you.
It sounds fantasic with bass. But, it is excellent as a jazz guitar amp, but you got to really crank it up to get it to overdrive. In the 70s, I heard lots of guitarists use them in bars, cranking them up all the way and using the volume on the guitar. Brian S. in Stray Cats got a good sound out of them. Really good for a gigging amp when you need volume. I found mine would blow my ears out, it is so powerful, if I tried using it in a basement jam.
Great demo...sure glad I bought one..Mine is a Relic Bassman with a custom shop plaque on the back..complete with cigarette burns and beer stains...man plug my Tele or Strat into it strait through the front, and its tone heaven.
yeah , since it was less than the non relic, and is now worth more than I payed for it, limited custom shop plate on back..and I never worried about scuffing it...yeah thats real lame...
is this amp clean as the roland jazz 120, i mean is there no hum

i have a blues deluxe. i love it but it dosen't have the headroom i'd like. How does the blues deville sound clean? does yours have those alnico 10" speakers?
purenectar 3 years ago
I'd say save a few hundred more and go for a 65' Twin Reverb RI.
(More head room and they sound wonderful, Definitely worth the extra money.)
Go out and try one; you'll understand then/.
doufeel 3 years ago
Depends if you want the headroom though..
willieturnip 3 years ago
go for a 65 Super Reverb. 410's a lot of HEADROOM. Perfect amp.

are you gay, guys?
reverendjetstream 3 years ago
What difference does it make if someone is gay? For the record, there aren't many gay men that are knowledgable about guitars, nor are there many that can play as well as these two.
benevolent1108 3 years ago
Sorry about my comment - i really like like Fender amps and guitars, but i do NOT like the way those two guys presents it, especially some of their comments... I was trying to make fun of them. But I have to say, both are really good players.

tragictravistie 3 years ago
Carl's a great player, but he plays with almost identical phrasing as Eric Johnson, almost copying...
blahman178 3 years ago
I also thought that when started to watch these videos..definitely he took lots of inffluence from E. Johnson.

Hey i have a Gibson SG Bass and i wanna know if this amp would sound good with that kind of bass...??
elpuma86 3 years ago
it does ... the bassman is built for both bass and guitar ... many people forget that :)
jonnyjamesblues 3 years ago 3
you forgot to say "remember, even with this setup you wont sound exactly like me....you have to practice...." i almost thought i could sound like that for a second!
opel47 3 years ago
This guy Carl was on a Video Guitar School called Guitar 101! I remember it like it was yesterday. I was learning form it! He had some good, very fine samples!

Hot DURN that tone is the S. Perfectly nasty.
Are the speakers p10r's or p10q's?
ghaws 3 years ago
what f/x you got going besides amp? I have not heard a bassman capable of that sound from just amp alone, that would be to good to be true.
dyingforastrat 3 years ago
Yes, it is only that amp. I also have this dvd and these guys are pros. They have a lot of experience in the music industry. No f/x!
cinema33 3 years ago
They sound like that becasue you neeed to crank them up. A tube rectified bassman will compress really eveny for amazing and smooth overdrive. If it is not tube rectified, you will not get it to souund like that.
mattstratocaster 3 years ago
The fx you hear are the harmonics and tremolo bar.
cinema33 3 years ago
Very beautiful sounding amp.
madferit87 3 years ago
That is one of the best sounding amps I've ever heard - unbelievably sexy.

how'd you do those harmonics?
fiveling 3 years ago

brddork 3 years ago
Have one handmade for you.
jensenbell 3 years ago
how loud you'll have to crank this thing before it strats to break up?
TUBEMAN192 3 years ago
depend what kind of tubes you'll use
but on up around 1/3(and that's about 4)0f your volume dial will get that nice tone it will start to break

I wonder how it sounds with a fender bass? After all, that is what it was made for. (Bassman)
Tickbryan 3 years ago
That's what I've always wondered.
doufeel 3 years ago
True, but the guitarists tried it and liked it.

i have a vintage les paul and i wanna know if this amp would sound good with one of these. bc he said there only good with fenders
sweetkidjo91 3 years ago
I play in a jazz band with a Gibson LP through this amp. It is awesome! It handles pedals well too.
blahman178 3 years ago
thanks man im thinking about an amp too
sweetkidjo91 3 years ago
Ya, the drive is great for blues, but with a distortion pedal, this thing is so versatile.
blahman178 3 years ago
Great demo...sure glad I bought one..Mine is a Relic Bassman with a custom shop plaque on the back..complete with cigarette burns and beer stains...man plug my Tele or Strat into it strait through the front, and its tone heaven.
CatsStudios 4 years ago
relic stuff is lame. Id rather put my own ciggie burns and beer stains on my stuff.
Cantankerous83 4 years ago 2
yeah , since it was less than the non relic, and is now worth more than I payed for it, limited custom shop plate on back..and I never worried about scuffing it...yeah thats real lame...
CatsStudios 4 years ago
wow a limited custom shop plate...not impressed. Guitars are tools you tool
Cantankerous83 4 years ago
So, if its reliced its no longer an effective tool? Brilliant.
CatsStudios 4 years ago
no its just amusing to see reliced instruments. Its like jokers who go out and buy pre distressed jeans. Its a pose.
Cantankerous83 4 years ago
Why are you so concerned over the cosmetic condition of someone else's amp, particularly someone you've never met (I assume)?
