Hi Jay, just a quick tip I use to make gaskets, if you cut them out first, then to make the hole use an old ball bearing lay the gasket on the casing and put the ball in the bolt hole and tap it with a hammer, after doing the fist hole put a bolt in it and move to the nest and put a bolt in that carry on until all the holes are made.
hope this helps I use it all the time with that gasket material!
The rods you have are the straight beam no window rod. They are the best ones. The older style with the oil hole was meant to lube the cam. It was later determined that the cam was over-lubed by splash so the holes were eliminated. This was actually an improvement as the engines tended to break...
... the number 2 rod if ever run low on oil as he was the LAST guy on the oil food chain. If the engine was ever low on oil, he got squat. You do not see this AS MUCH with the later style rods. Anytime I re-build an Onan I go with that style rod if I need to replace the rods. Is your bore standard? Do you need an overbore? I think I have a good set of used standard pistons and rings if you could use them.
The thing with pistons is, they don't need to be perfect, no matter what anyone says. As long as you take off any edges with a decent needle file and give the piston a bit of a flat with some 1200 wet and dry (use some wd40 to help give a decent finish and make removing the coke easier) it'll be good to go.
Obviously the piston will need new rings and a well honed cylinder.
Perhaps the pistons got wrecked because of not only low oil but, some OLD oil as well..? On smaller engines, people tend to ignore the oil age, and before long, they are using oil that just can't Protect the engine parts anymore.. Good Luck with all of that.. and Thanks for the Onan update.

You need to show yourself every once in a while, as well as the gear you are working on. I enjoy your channel.
