It seems that Russell lost balance because Jordan stepped back, not because of their contact. Note that he didn't lose balance immediately after the contact.
I'm not sure if you are refering to this video. But what I saw was Jordan pushing Russell on the butt, and Russell falling forward. And then when Russell tried to regain his balance from the initial push, he slipped. This is a textbook offensive foul. One of the biggest non-calls of the Jordan era.
Jordan made a contact but he didnt really pushed off russell. It was a contact that doesnt merit a foul. If you'll just look carefully on russell's body movement, he's trying to cut jordan going to the basket but mj anticipated it and did the crossover instead that made russell off balance.

NBA basketball in clutch moments follows a pattern and in this situation (even with the great ones) MJ would have thought he had the open shot but Russel would be there to contest it and the rest of the Jazz would have realized that Jordan would have stopped his dribble and immediately swarmed around him to block the pass/shot. Jordan (then resorting to pump fakes and anything else in his arsenal) but would have eventually thrown up a shot contested by 3 player's hands in his face.

Its not a push. Look at Russell's feet. He's running completely TOWARDS the sideline. His momentum took him forward.
If he was playing good defense, his feet would have been facing the opposite basket and moving side to side.

His hand was on him, but I would hardly call that a push. It would be a stretch to call that more than incidental contact, you can clearly see Jordan's hand moving down to avoid pushing off him, rather than moving to the right. Either way, Russell was not prepared to double back the other direction to block the shot.

That "push" wouldnt have mattered had he kept his momentum correctly in front of him towards jordan... instead he kept strafing to the side and overshot.

I'm not sure if you are refering to this video. But what I saw was Jordan pushing Russell on the butt, and Russell falling forward. And then when Russell tried to regain his balance from the initial push, he slipped. This is a textbook offensive foul. One of the biggest non-calls of the Jordan era.

Jordan made a contact but he didnt really pushed off russell. It was a contact that doesnt merit a foul. If you'll just look carefully on russell's body movement, he's trying to cut jordan going to the basket but mj anticipated it and did the crossover instead that made russell off balance.

NBA basketball in clutch moments follows a pattern and in this situation (even with the great ones) MJ would have thought he had the open shot but Russel would be there to contest it and the rest of the Jazz would have realized that Jordan would have stopped his dribble and immediately swarmed around him to block the pass/shot. Jordan (then resorting to pump fakes and anything else in his arsenal) but would have eventually thrown up a shot contested by 3 player's hands in his face.
