Don't they use the same text books to learn Korean in all the schools in S. Korea? Is it just pronunciation and enunciation that makes it hard to understand or do they use different words than Seoul dialect? I understood more of what they were saying than the nightly news broadcasts.
@Songer80 Well, it's the same as Northern and Southern accents in America (assuming you are from America). Same language. Different accents. Different slang terms.
Saturi is actually the equivalent of accents. Anything that is not the Seoul dialect (considered the standard dialect) is referred to as 'saturi'.
@sjoakame no, dialects are different from accents. saturi are derived from the different languages of the 3 kingdom period of korea. equivalent of saturi would be the crumbrian dialect in britain
@MrCaptaincommando Accents ARE dialects. Dialect refers to a broader range of different linguistic patterns and such. Accents would fall under dialect and would refer to where stresses in words are put and different slang terms. Same thing.
I re-read my post from before and I don't really understand how I'm "wrong" It's the same language. Different accents. Different slang terms. Anything apart from the standard dialect is considered saturi.
@Songer80 Yes. There are only very few different words/vocabularies in different Korean dialects(except Jeju Island dialect, which really is very different from all the others). However, enunciation and accents really makes it sound very different from the 'textbook Korean', a lot more to non-native-korean listeners of course.

OMG HAHA IT'S TOO FUNNY.
Southern dialect is a way too much. Even koreans can't understand it 100%.
and the accent is super funny.
If you see some comic shows in korea, southern dialect are often made fun of.
mocking them lol.
