Not all sex offenders have abused, raped or molested anyone. The first part is not entirely true. Many sex offenders are refused jobs such as performing assembly quality checks at IBM because they're a "sex offender." Such a job involves no contact with minors and pays a decent living wage, but even if IBM would be OK with that, their liability insurance premiums would skyrocket because of having a felon on staff.

Now that's not entirely fair. Trust is something that must be earned. Being a convicted sex offender would certainly make it more difficult to trust that person, but there is a unique individual and a unique case involved in each situation. One of the nasty problems with this topic is that "sex offenders" is a very generic grouping of a very diverse group of people and offenses, and that's just a huge problem ignoring all else.

Having a sexual assault touch your life doesn't magically enlighten you; just ask the Kanka family-they were the only family on their block that didn't know about two high-risk sex offenders living across the street, and the end result, "Megan's Law," proves the ignorance of all involved in passing it.

There is no proof that one single crime has been prevented through registration, though there is plenty of proof that it has incited violent criminal retribution from neighbors in far more than one case. If the Kanka family didn't know about the sex offenders without Megan's Law, it's not likely they would have WITH it. As for your first comment, you're avoiding facts with a vague psychology comment. Not all sex offenders have abused, raped or molested anyone. A lot of them were caught with child pornography, or pee'd in public, had consentual sex in public. etc. Yet many will suffer horribly because they must be registered, hurting those around them for just existing, having to walk on thin ice in every public or non-public situation. They will die alone, no freedom or hope... nothing. That is a life sentence my friend, all because they were convicted for a crime that had no victim.

The first part is not entirely true. Many sex offenders are refused jobs such as performing assembly quality checks at IBM because they're a "sex offender." Such a job involves no contact with minors and pays a decent living wage, but even if IBM would be OK with that, their liability insurance premiums would skyrocket because of having a felon on staff.

The last comment doesn't read right in retrospect. ~6% of convicted sex offenders, on average, sexually reoffend. 87% of new sex offenses are committed by people who have no criminal record at all, and thus aren't registered anyway. The biggest danger comes from acquaintances and family members, yet we focus on strangers, especially convicted sex offenders, who have been proven time and again to be very unlikely to screw up a second time.

Now that's not entirely fair. Trust is something that must be earned. Being a convicted sex offender would certainly make it more difficult to trust that person, but there is a unique individual and a unique case involved in each situation. One of the nasty problems with this topic is that "sex offenders" is a very generic grouping of a very diverse group of people and offenses, and that's just a huge problem ignoring all else.

They took advantage of that trust, and were still given their right to a fair trial. It takes concrete evidence and a jury to come to the conclusion that these offenders are not worth their risk to society. You may find unique cases to take chances on, but I refuse to gamble with innocent lives.

Many sex crime cases never make it to trial--they get plea bargained, plus other issues causing the "fair trial" to not be reached. Housing, work, family, and yes, FRIENDS (the pound of cure), have been solidly proven to prevent sexual reoffense. In this fashion, your methods would in effect ignore the "ounce worth a pound" philosophy you just used as the basis for your argument. Continued...

(Cont) The way convicted SO's are handled (by society AND the law) goes against the conclusions of every comprehensive research study from authoritative sources such as the USDOJ and the NY Dept. of Corrections. It's your prerogative to dislike them, but at least follow the research that says "this is how to keep them from reoffending, and that 'solution' has the opposite effect from what you'd predict."

Let's not forget: I'm on the same side as everyone else here as far as the *real* issue: preventing and/or reducing new sex crimes. We're really bickering over how to do it, but some jerks call me nasty names instead of understanding that I'm not "fighting for pedo rights" and crap like that, only for a doce of reality in how offenders are handled, coupled with the fact that people can and do change every day.

Unfortunately, the majority of viewers of this clip are uneducated in the field of sex offender management; they think that "punishment" is a solution and even a "deterrent," and that is merely the tip of the iceberg of how ignorant they are regarding crime, criminal rehabilitation, and the fact that their radical "ideal solution" is not a real-world feasible way to do things.
