bought the first LP the week it came out back then on the strength of the producer's name, whose work I love (Jack Douglas). I wasn't disappointed! And this song just took me! The intro with the deep bass just sends me somewhere else. Saw them live for the first time not long after 'In Color' came out, and they were opening for Kansas. What a brillaint band! And they're still here today which is a tribute to their awesome talent!
No one should sell Cheap Trick short. They are brilliant writers and musicians. Go Rick and Company! Saw you all at UC Irvine (Calif.) back in '83 or so.
While waiting for my backordered Cheap Trick Sgt Pepper Live CD (I already have the DVD), I went to the library and rented a Cheap Trick CD for a trip. This song was on it as well as Ballad of TV Violence. They are both great!! Since I was by myself, I played tracks 9 & 10 over and over the whole trip! I still couldn't get enough, so I was thrilled to find it here! I wish I could see Robin, not just hear him!
Excellent ballad...but disagree that concrete blonde's REMAKE is better...its good but cheap trick really nailed that track down...superb recording...Another great underated CT ballad is "Worlds greatest lover"
@lordfinbar from what i can gather it is about a man who is telling his girlfriend to always remember he loves her even though he is dead...kinda like a love song from beyond the grave
Great song. I can't believe that at 40 years old I've never heard this version. I always thought that the Concrete Blonde version was the original. If you've never heard that version, do yourself a favor and check it out. It's phenominal.
This song was on their first album in 1976... it received little airplay except for the last song..."Oh Candy" which was a song about a girl who hated herself so much that she committed suicide....come to think of it Mandocello is probably about the same person.... no wonder Rick didn't want to talk about it... if you are 40 now that means you were about 7 when this album came out ... it was likely long forgotten when you started listening to rock .....
I have to post a correction here. "Oh Candy" was about a man--a photographer friend of Ricks that he had nicknamed Candy. A relative of that person posted a comment to an "Oh Candy" posting on YouTube that the photographer committed suicide in 1975 and that was what that song was based on. So Mandocello is not about the same person, but it seems like it's about someone else he was close to who met a tragic end....
The photographer's name was Marshall Mintz and I think his nickname was M & M. CT went with Candy for the song because, they thought it sounded better, if it was about a female. CT said something like, MM was the first to capture the spirit of the band in a photo. He not only photographed the band, he was like a band mate. They were all friends. MM hung himself. I think the reason was, he was lonely.
i cannot believe the beauty of this to this day...un...fucking...believable. Cheap trick's and anyones best momment. Just bow down to this. BEAUTIFUL! XXXX
Thanks for posting this! I've had this song stuck in my head for a while now and could not remember the name of it. Gotta dig out my LPs and turntable!
In an interview Rick was asked who he wrote this song for...he replied, 'My Dog.' The second question should have been...please explain the line, 'I Could Be Your Lover, Let's Pretend.'
Rick was likely sidestepping the interviewer .. Listening to the words (what I can make out) and the ominous haunting background with modal scales, time signature changes, and an instrument from Bachs day, he was likely in a despondent emotional state when he wrote it .. I think that he wrote it for someone he wanted to be close to but she had a drug problem that prevented it and it eventually killed her... but it was personal with him and he didn't want to get into it with the interview..
I can't believe This is on You tube!!!! This is one of the most impressive ballads ever. I still have this on vinyl...now if I can find a turntable lol.
Go on Ebay. You can get good turntables for some really great prices. My friend bought a Technics, which back in the day was a great one, for $12, and $8 shipping! Now THAT'S a deal my friend. You'll be able to spin your old vinyl to your heart's content! I do...I still own all my original turntables...and collected about 20+ more over the years. Nothing like the warmth of vinyl.
@howes1960 i got my last turntable off the top of a pile trash left out on a curb. it's a Panasonic that retailed at one time for over $300 dollars :/
I only just heard this song the first time last year, and my God, it's beautiful! You don't hear stuff like this often, and I absolutely love it, probably one of the best love songs ever made.
BEST vocalist in hard rock IMO...and my favourite bass sound and player...he is the reason i starting recording with 12 string basses...i dunno if cheap trick EVER wrote a bad saong..THE most underrated band in HISTORY...period!!!
One person has lost his or her fucking mind.

Zander's voice is mixed into such a dreamy state, it's so cool.
I prefer the more recent version of this tune with Billy Corgan because the vocals are a little less dreamy and a bit more out front.
(Zander's got one of the best voices in rock & roll!)
