The trouble I've seen with keeping larger cat species as pets isn't that they act much different from house cats, but that they act much the same, and the things a house cat can do that are only cute and playful become dangerous when you up the size of the cat. I knew of someone who had a pet cougar and he had deep scars all up and down his arms just from play bites. Not a good pet by any means!
cats are sensitive, fierce and choosy, they are not crowd pleaser like dogs. by nature, they are born hunters. i owned 17 cats during my young age, when i play with them sometimes i get scratched, bitten but as much as possible they control it. you would know when they are excited or no longer want to play. the tail is wagging strangely. respect is the key word.if there is respect,there is love that can pierce through a beast's heart.

I have an 10lb orange tabby at home and I know that when she plays (which is 98% of the time lol) - she can get more than a little too rough. Scratching and biting and all, and she can and has drawn quite a bit of blood in the past. So when I look at the Serval and that Caracal, and the size of their Teeth - you know I wont be looking up breeders anytime soon.

A caracal would never hunt a serval- common sense would tell you that a cat would not prey on another cat that is roughly the same size! In the wild, their habitats rarely overlap anyway. At most, they would compete for the same prey.

@maximum411 Yeah I wondered about that too; they're about the same size, it's only because the caracal here is male, and the serval is female that the caracal is bigger. That said, in our local zoo there is a really big male caracal, so I think they vary a lot, not just because of gender, but also individually. Undoubtedly the caracal is a much more powerful animal, but I don't think they would actively hunt a serval, as there would be too much risk of injury involved.
i can tame or become friends with any cat, small or large(time depends on the bread and size). i have some special abilty to communicate with any cat, over 35 years of interacting with them. i love cats, a good house pet, my favorite, is a maine coon. don't get anything larger than a house cat for a pet. leave the wild animals to the wild, thats their domain. i've been deep clawed, deep bitten and chewed on by house cats in the face and arms. get a house cat and don't declaw them.
@MrKingPin360 they are safe to keep as a house pet but its a lot of work! you have to get caging and a class 2 permeate and you need to know what to feed them,you can't feed them cat food, i feed mine chicken necks and turkey,and if you raise them with discipline they can make a really good addition to you family! =)

Now, Cleo's biggest fear is me, because she doesnt understand what is going on or why she is here, she only knows she doesnt want to be near me. How about adopting some feral domestic cats instead of buying an expensive exotic cat? The Caracal and Serval Cats would rather be in the wild and the feral cats need help. There is virtually no difference in feline behavior from the largest to the smallest breed so you don't have an exotic to admire cats. Adopt a feral colony or several and save their lives.

I have worked for several petstores and have had direct contact with pet owners. I will admit, nearly all people love their pets, but most do not fully know about them. The average person, I have found, does not research the animal they are taking care of and simply rely and whatever the pet store employee tells them, regardless if said employee knows much at all. Most pets I hear about are not cared for properly. Doug is simply trying to stop this. He is not a hero, he just loves animals.
Since I live in the same town as to where this facility is, I am fairly certain I can vouch for that. This man is not trying to become famous by rescuing these animals. He simply wants to educate the public to better understand how mankind is for the most part inept at taking care of even the most simplest pets, such as cats and dogs, let alone an animal that has not seen domestication for very long.
I quite simply have to say to those of you who this this man is an idiot, you truly have your head further up your ass than I had earlier thought possible. For those of you who think these animals should be released into the wild, this cannot happen for they would most certainly die very shortly afterwards, having adapted to captivity. And for those of who think they should be kept outside, it is only warm enough roughly 3 months of the year for an African cat.

I disagree that you cannot keep these animals as pets - these animals practically ARE pets, the dog was domesticated + the common cat, the caracal can also be domesticated, what is the difference? They were all wild at one time.

this guy is wrong about caracals hunting servals.
A caracal would never hunt a serval- common sense would tell you that a cat would not prey on another cat that is roughly the same size! In the wild, their habitats rarely overlap anyway. At most, they would compete for the same prey.
at least he has the right idea about conservation and forbidding ownership of big cats, though.

@maximum411 Yeah I wondered about that too; they're about the same size, it's only because the caracal here is male, and the serval is female that the caracal is bigger. That said, in our local zoo there is a really big male caracal, so I think they vary a lot, not just because of gender, but also individually. Undoubtedly the caracal is a much more powerful animal, but I don't think they would actively hunt a serval, as there would be too much risk of injury involved.

i can tame or become friends with any cat, small or large(time depends on the bread and size). i have some special abilty to communicate with any cat, over 35 years of interacting with them. i love cats, a good house pet, my favorite, is a maine coon. don't get anything larger than a house cat for a pet. leave the wild animals to the wild, thats their domain. i've been deep clawed, deep bitten and chewed on by house cats in the face and arms. get a house cat and don't declaw them.

@MrKingPin360 they are safe to keep as a house pet but its a lot of work! you have to get caging and a class 2 permeate and you need to know what to feed them,you can't feed them cat food, i feed mine chicken necks and turkey,and if you raise them with discipline they can make a really good addition to you family! =)

The caracal and the serval both seem to dislike him quite a bit since they bare their fangs and pin their ears back when he is around and is it just me or the angle the serval is standing but does look quite fat? He also seems like a hypocrite, telling people not to own these animals as pets but he is keeping them as pets...

This is Carlos. Carlos hates me because I keep him caged up away from the wild where he longs to be. Now, Cleo's biggest fear is me, because she doesnt understand what is going on or why she is here, she only knows she doesnt want to be near me. And I always like to put them in the most stressful positions where I take there hiding place from them making them feel vulnerable. We are members of CAZA, and we are very fortunet to have that status, or else we would be in jail right now.

How about adopting some feral domestic cats instead of buying an expensive exotic cat? The Caracal and Serval Cats would rather be in the wild and the feral cats need help. There is virtually no difference in feline behavior from the largest to the smallest breed so you don't have an exotic to admire cats. Adopt a feral colony or several and save their lives.

I have worked for several petstores and have had direct contact with pet owners. I will admit, nearly all people love their pets, but most do not fully know about them. The average person, I have found, does not research the animal they are taking care of and simply rely and whatever the pet store employee tells them, regardless if said employee knows much at all. Most pets I hear about are not cared for properly. Doug is simply trying to stop this. He is not a hero, he just loves animals.

Since I live in the same town as to where this facility is, I am fairly certain I can vouch for that. This man is not trying to become famous by rescuing these animals. He simply wants to educate the public to better understand how mankind is for the most part inept at taking care of even the most simplest pets, such as cats and dogs, let alone an animal that has not seen domestication for very long.

For those of you who think these animals should be released into the wild, this cannot happen for they would most certainly die very shortly afterwards, having adapted to captivity. Caracals aren't endangered from what I've read. An uncle of mine had a family of 5. I visited them once when I was a teenager, they're amazing cats.

Like they are a rare type of person that should be the only ones qualified to own these animals. Shut up, there's nothing special about you.

I know that when servals hiss and spit, it's because they are showing affection. That's what she hisses and then gently lays her paws on him. She's letting him know she loves him. It's really opposite of what you would expect.

No, hissing means the same thing for all cat species. The "talk to you" myth was made up by serval and caracal owners who were in denial that their sweet little kitty could possibly be showing aggression toward them. Hissing is a universal signal in the animal kingdom for "get away from me," and it is foolish to think that these two species are the exception.
