You can tell Louis had a huge will-to-win in this fight. Schmeling seemed very intimated when he saw how intense his opponent was. I've never seen someone so petrified that they turned their back and hugged the ropes. WTF!!
Joe Louis should have been disqualified in his second fight against Max Schmeling.
There were to many kidney shots from Louis, and the Ref ignored them, my guess that it had a lot to do with the anti-nazi sentiments at the time of this fight.
Joe is the personification of what a TRUE champion is. I mean the man is unbelievable. After his startling and crushing defeat in their first fight to make the kind of adjustments he did to absolutely destroy Schmeling is beyond impressive. But, lets give Schmeling credit for getting up from punches that would have ko'd a water buffalo. What a display of chin and heart!
This is one of my favorite fights of all time. Schmeling has dominated Louis in their first fight, detecting a flaw that allowed him to use his right freely against Louis. But Louis, after winning the title, could not declare himself champion "unless I beat that Schmelling" and trained incessantly for this fight. The results: Max landed just 2 (count them TWO) punches, while Louis landed practically everything, shattering two of Max's vertebrae, and knocking him down 3 times. Thanks for posting.
