  • A masters art always looks easy. Thanks for another great lesson !

  • Hi Davie,

Would this pattern work with natural deer hair as opposed to dyed deer hair?

    Cheers

    Chris Leigh

  • Hi Chris,

Try any colour you have especially natural as I'm sure it would work well for you...ATB Davie

  • @Salfordian35 It sure would, as tied that would fish very well when Crickets are around, In natural deer hair and say yellow dubbing, You have a very good hopper pattern for my favorite time of the trout season, Sept.

  • Hi Davie, I really have to give you alot of credit for tying this fly with 8/0 thread. I have trouble with 6/0 and 3/0 when I tie..... I just don't have the touch yet like you do yet...... Can I use other colors of deer hair than the dark brown or seals fur for this pattern? I will go looking for darker deer hair but the seals fur might pose a lil problem. Last but not least, what are common sizes in this fly....I really like this one cause it's so simple and uses so few supplies

  • Hi Sasquatch7foot,

Yes just change the colour and size of this pattern to suit the species of fly that's coming off as this is a great style and worth tying..Alders can be tyed on size 10s and 12s the male being the smaller..

    All the best Davie

  • Very nice. Dos this fly float good at night fishing?

  • Hi aknames,

This would be an ideal fly for night fishing...ATB Davie

  • @aknames

Thanks. I just ty 10 of them :).

  • Hi Davie, excellent video as usual. What hook and size are you using for this pattern.

Keep up the good work Davie your tying is inspirational for all us amateurs. Tight lines for 2011. Cheers Iain.

  • Hi Iain,

I tyed the fly on a Kamazan B170 size 10 or 12 but it's also worth tying it on a B160 size 8 or 10 which is a wide cape hook and is ideal for muddler patterns like this one, and thankyou for the kind words...

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie, great fly, I havn't got roe deer but i do have deer hair would it still be as effective the hair i've got is a greyish colour, and orange, great videos by the way, you must have released the most videos on you tube thats a very generous thing to do everybody that watches them benefits from your knowledge and I think I speak for everyone when i say thanks. Regards Alan

  • Super video, Davie.

How's the River Ayr this season?

    Best Regards,

    ~David

  • Hi David,

I caught a few fish early in the season but over the last couple of weeks I haven't bothered due to the salmon smolts heading to sea and as well with the water being very low...I hope that you are catching a few yourself...

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie,

Glad to hear that your catching fish. I've officially gave up on the Irvine, spent ages down and had very little to show. When I do get a fish its usually no bigger than 4". The river was stocked with 150 brownies but they've ran away to hurlford I think.

Awell I guess I'll have to stick to the Fisheries,

    Best Regards,

    ~David

  • @ScottishFlyTyerCalum

That's very interesting! I bet she didn't pay £2 for it though like they are on ebay though! probably more than I have anyway :L

    Paul

  • Great looking fly Davie

  • Hi ScottishFlyTyerCalum,

If you watch the Alder fly you will see that they mostly stay still on the water and will let themself drift to the sides so I would try and do the same as I caught more fish this way, but I wouldn't say no to pulling them either especially along the sides of the loch..The Alder is a big fly and when they fall on the water the fish do react to this as I have caught many fish just as the fly hits the water so watch for this too...

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie,

Great job on the Sedge Hog and another great video, going to use that one soon.

I ordered several packages of the Roe Deer, great stuff! I really like it, very nice tips & markings. Many thanks for introducing me to it.

    ATB, Cheers

  • great video again! ps: how many blue shirts do you own? ;)

  • Hi ThomasR099,

I have four blue shirts but I use the same one for filming, it sits close to my fly tying bench so all I do is slip it on when I want to flim a fly...Glad you liked the video...

    All the best Davie

  • Davie, First, all of your videos have been the best tying videos anywhere i could find. Second, is it cheaper to dye your own deer hair?

    thanks

  • Hi 13snowgod,

Thanks for the kind words..It is always an advantage to dye your own materials as this will give you a better choice when it comes to copying a natural fly that you see when fishing, a dye will cost you about £5 and will dye you a lot of materials..

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie,

I know you like shannon saddles but do you know if you can get them in natural colours? On Artifly.com, they only have dyed ones and I contacted them with no response. They seem to be the best quality hackles in my price range and help is greatly appreciated as always!!

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

I was sure I had answered your questions it may not have worked..I do like shannon when I can find them, the last natural one's I bought were from Glasgow Angling Centre but that was a couple of years ago. You may not know that saddles in natural colours are getting a bit scarce due to the fashion industry using them for hair extensions and they are getting a bit hard to come by. Sorry I can't be of any more help.

    All the best Davie

  • @DavieMcPhail You could probably have your own fashion studio then! :D I have seen a lot of materials listed on ebay as both fly tying and fashion especially goose biots and pheasant tails for some reason!
