I only feed my frog once every three to four days. I used to have two that I would feed on a regular basis but one died within a couple months and since then I've only feed the frog blood worms every three or four days. He seems perfectly fine too. I just worry that people might feed these critters too much and assume its normal cause its written down somewhere. I think certain factors need to quantified.
Possible reasons for death: too small of a tank: Ammonium levels increased water was changed enough for three frogs. Or you over fed them! Animals can die of obesity too.
Louis was a girl btw. I named her after Louis Armstrong, and I have a Louis number 2 now. She is the offspring of two other ACF's I have/had. The mother, Sloopy, is still with me. The father, Jerry Seinfeld, is gone. I fed him some turkey after a Thanksgiving 8 years ago and he got really frisky with the girls!
I had one that was fat like that. I brought her to the vet and they put her down. An autopsy found that she had a tumor the size of a small plum that was pushing on her liver causing her to retain water. RIP Louis.
How are you thinking I could have put my beloved Louis down myself? I take care of all my pets and the money thing is not an issue for their well-being.
its true not in the us but in california ppl let them out into the water supply and because there the water never freezes over they can live all year long the eat up all the fish but only in california i dont know if they changed it or not i live in ny so i dont really care
Depends how much you want. You cant frozen blood worms freeze dried or alive blood worms you get in a big bag and you have to sieve tehm. I feed mine on freeze dried in the winter and frozen blood worms in the summer sometimes as I treat i give them alive. 50grams of freeze dried is 7 pound and blood worm is a tenner at the most.
Sad to report all 9 frogs died last week within days of each other. I have no idea what happened after 4 and a half years of watching them grow. They all seemed to be very lethargic, almost in a coma, motionless, one at a time. Oddly enough, the largest frog with bloating disease was the LAST one to die. I thought I'd lose him last year, yet he was the last one. The biggest frogs were about 6 in long, 2.2 in wide. Thank you all for your responses.
@winnie1212 maybe it wasn't 'dropsy'? it can happen.. don't stop keeping frogs!
once you see a bloater.. maybe to take them out.. to see what ocurrs next? (water and that crap food that is processed may've had something to do with it.. let alone the breeding?) most times it's not the keepers fault, captivity creatures and their keepers have much strange things to endure and learn.. i know, it's a real pain in the anus.
Cool frogs, but one of them seems to be suffering from dropsy. It will still appear to be healthy and active, but if not treated, it will die without notice.
NOT TABLE SALT!!! Only Aquarium Salt or Rock Salt. Sorry, I meant 1.5 tablespoons of salt per gallon. Maracyn Plus antibacterial works magic! A bloated frog is not a heathly one.
That frog has Dropsy. It needs 1.5 tablespoons of aqauarium or rock salt and Maracyn Plus in the dosage recommended on the bottle. The frog will shrink back to normal size within a week or two. Otherwise, eventually,.. it will die from the infection.
lol dats so funny

dsheroka 3 years ago
well that's more believable coming from a state that considers ferrets illegal too! (at least they were when i lived there)
starrhiannon 3 years ago
illegal in CA because they eat local frog species and have brought some of them to the endangered list.
pballer2005 3 years ago
they are not illegal in the US. Have you ever heard of Grow-A-Frog. they sell ACFs in the US

Robyn408 3 years ago 2
No, they stretch and can fit things twice their normal size in their body when they eat. It's scary and amazing at the same time.

bloating is contagious (spelling?) you're supposed to seperate them once you see this happening.
