The frame rate is jittery on this footgae probably due to converting from one frame rate to another which at times requires a converter to blend from frame to frame instead of holding or skipping.,adobe for example does not do this during conversion ,you need a plugin like 'Twixtor pro'
As a Yank (yes, there are F1 fans here in tin-top land), I find it amusing when English commentators explain the speeds in MILES per hour. Are American units of measurement taught in British schools?
Warwick is cool! He obviously had leg pain, but he'll just walk it off!
@FrodothePuppet Well, I'm German, but as far as I know, "miles" aren't American units, but actually British ones. Since the USA and Britain have a common history (colonialism), they have the same measurements. But as I said, I'm German and therefore I'm not sure.
Thanks for the video....I've watched every race from 1986 on, and a few from before. Had seen fragments of this one. It's a real treat to be able to watch the whole race!
that son of a bitch jakcy icks stopped the race so prost should win. the irony is this: if the race was completed and prost finished second he would have earned 6 points. because the race stopped instead of earning 9 win points (old system if you know it), he earned 4,5. if he finished second he would have been champion in the end.
This was the best race in Monaco at all time and care but the most exciting in the history of F1, frustration for some, joy for others ..! We see an E. Irvine that although he took the blue flag will never step a sedi D. Coulthard, J. Alessi to boot a victory by the veto, and that O. Panis won his only race in the 1st and the F1 ..! I remember when I saw her live, full emocion ..! .. Congratulations on this material!
Alltough i'm a big fan of Ayrton and i admired him very much, The truth is that in this race Bellof was gaining faster on Senna than Senna did on Prost. So if Ickx didn't finished the race for safety reason the outcome would not necessary be in Senna's favor
Indeed Bellof would have had great difficulties to pass Senna But it would have been a nice spectacle between these two young drivers.
And yes, in those days there were more illegal cars. Engineers were realy playing the rules at ther maximum. Remembre the water thanks to have more weight.
Belloff was faster when he had a clear track in front of him, but Senna won a lot of time, when it came to passing. In the early laps of the race, Bellof was only a second and two cars behind Senna, but than the brazilian was faster working his way trough the field. So it would have been very hard for bellof passing Senna even if he would have catched him!
but I think Bellof's car was later found to have unfair advantage
Senna and Mansell were not the only new drivers to run near the front – Stefan Bellof finished third and had been closing on both Senna and Prost.[4] The Tyrrell team's results were erased later in the season due to weight infringements.
@digoclocks : but don't forget that bellof was driving a normal aspirated cosworth engined car, which was the ideal car for such a track especilly in such conditions. so being fair, one have to admit senna was really over the top compared to all other drivers that day. driving a turbo engined car on a wet twisty narrow track is far harder !
I believe the reason the comentary sounds like that is : phone lines. I believe the BBC used phone lines to get the audio back to Britain for broadcast. Monte Carlo is crowded, and of course they use a 'world feed' for the video. I suggest this idea because I have a VHS copy of BBc broadcast (via CBC) of the 1987 Monaco GP, and the effect of what could be a phoneline is even stronger.
@schopfheim91 - it looks like someone's spliced audio from one of Duke's mail-in tapes with the BBC commentary. The chap at the start is... Simon Taylor, I think. The Duke tapes tended to come out months after the races and had access to much more material than the BBC did. They were usually an hour of highlights, but IIRC the Monaco 84 one had to be padded because the race was shortened, hence the 'flavour' stuff at the start.
Look in the top-right corner of the video at 05:16 and you will get a good idea of how bad the conditions are. You can see the sails of the boats wobling from side to side violentley!
Lauda started 8th not 7th, but it is amazing anyway. Thank you so much for uploading :-) I love Murray and James' commentary and I couldn't agree more about the long list of legendary drivers - it's something like in Field of Dreams, or perhaps Streets of Dreams. First Class, well done ;-)
Here where I sit in Indianapolis, we'd call this one of the races that separates the friggin' posers from the diehards. Every single pure fan (unaffiliated with any of the teams) who attended that race should be toasted to a round of drinks; for the love of the sport, baby.
In the beginning you can see it. He started 7th on the grid. In 1984 he was very often down the grid. His best qualifying result was 3rd at Silverstone. Only 7 times he started from the first 3 rows and 4 times he started worse than 9th. Although he became world champion.

people seem to forget that:
1. bellof's car was the best car in the race for these conditions
2. there is a strong chance bellof wouldn't have passed him
3. bellof was disqualified later in the season so senna would've won either way because bellof was driving an ILLEGAL car...

People often overlook Stefan Bellof in this race, he is kinda lost because of the Senna Prost fight. He raced a great race.
Tyrell did get DQ because of weight infringements however he started at
22nd place and ended up i 3rd that is still and incredible drive. Sadley he died the year after.
falmark187 2 years ago
Yes, look what Brundle did in Detroit. The Tyrrell was a very good car for tight street circuits!
