Americans have suddenly turned away from the indoor mall shopping experience. For sure, the economy has hurt retail overall but I think the problems for indoor malls are more complex. Today, people appear to prefer driving from big box store to big box store. My bet is that in addition to the economy, there are few large retail parks close to this mall that have hastened its demise. However, it looks like even the new big box model of retail is in trouble with the advent of online shopping.
@endrightwinglunacy A few miles in either direction are some rather large malls. This was an "outlet" mall, and a brand new Tanger-owned mall with more flair opened about 20 minutes west of here. So besides being in a not so prime location, I don't remember this mall ever being very popular. The area is just over-saturated with malls really.
I like your video. This is sure one dead-ass mall. I have a feeling that, in a few years, it's either going to become something else or maybe even getting the wrecking ball :*( This video was posted in 2009. Since then, even more businesses are closing or have already closed. It's a shame that this is happening to our malls in this day and age.
This is the SAD state of the American Middle class and all the politicians worry about is Hollywood , Media Corps and things like SOPA . Shame is not the right word for them , they are criminals. The Great American Heavy Industry( Iron& Steel, Construction, Automobiles etc) is dying and these criminals think about the welfare of the entertainment industry...pathetic.
@tsbrownie Its not about service jobs any more.TheUS politicians are now importing entire bridges from China, its not just about IT,they are killing American Heavy industries.I am from India so I am not against outsourcing but there is a limit to everything .Outsourcing is good as long as it helps industry save a few dollars but when a nation begins to rely completely on other countries for simple things like bridge parts it turns into a cancer which eats away the industry it was suppose to help
@Galavya41 They've turned the US into a 3rd world country: we export raw materials and import finished goods; the rich/powerful live well but the rest are sinking and have little hope for advancement; opportunity for advancement based on merit is fading and the best opportunities are for the "connected"; being a politician is now a good job and they make a lot of money by selling out their constituents for personal gain; during times of crisis, the rich/powerful are taken care of first; etc.
having lived in the area where this mall is, it has sucked for ever, no good stores, it is an outlet mall, and it kills me real companies do not move in that would attract business
@gggreggg Form 1040 is a good start. How about an "Environmental Impact Statement"? An EIS can take several years to be completed. I am not referring to relaxing environmental protections, just referring to the amount of paperwork and reporting required.
@MichaeljRichter That's the Wall Street line for sure. Companies move overseas to save very little on costs (the labor in a $400 jacket is $2, cutting it changes little). They really move overseas to avoid accounting oversight, to avoid paying benefits, etc. It's not the government's fault for trying to improve society for everyone, but business fault for trying to hold others down.
Okay people time to do the American thing and work our way out of this mess. If we wait for Uncle Sam we'll all be relocating to China, India, and South America to find work. Let's turn the engine of industry back on in this country!
@lupocephalic I wholly agree with you. The problem is definitely greed. Everybody has been greedy during best of times and didn't know how good they had it.
I'm from Ireland. We once had a booming economy and everybody had jobs. The trouble was, the whole nation here was greedy and mean. Everybody wanted to buy cheaper goods at the cost of Irish jobs. Everybody kept demanding higher and higher wages. before long, wage inflation force companies to leave Ireland and seek cheaper labour elsewhere
It is an easy thing to say the problem is "greed." To an extent I agree with you, but qualify my comment with governmental greed. By this I mean the government regulates and taxes businesses out of the country and then complains that jobs are going overseas. Who can blame stockholders and business owners for doing this? Profit is necessary to remain in business. Government should help business and protect the rights of citizens. Both objectives can be met.
While I agree that businesses move overseas to avoid paying taxes, and I agree that "both objectives can be met" ... I don't agree that businesses are not greedy.
It's time we expected business to pay their share of taxes rather than moving jobs overseas to avoid paying their fair share.
@MrLeftfoot7 American people should introduce industrial education into schools, encourage survival skills in kids, etc. By chance, kids may develop factories in the future. I believe so.
Why let all the jobs from USA go out to China, India and other poor countries? Same things are happening in my homeland Ireland. Many jobs are gone. Ireland is starting to depopulate as young people are emigrating out to Australia, New Zealand, etc.
@MrLeftfoot7 tell me about it!!! my business has been dropping almost $20,000 a year. and i am a small business. only grossing around $140,000 a year. sucks!!!!! i might have a year left.
It's finally dawning on the American people that it's only gonna get worse. We're in for hard times while "globalization" balances out living standards - which means the US will inevitably fall lower as other countrys rise. Our level of pain will be partially measured in just how fast they rise.
Ruffian you are right. The dead ghost mall is the manifestation of the horrific trade treaties that have denuded American of its basic industries and have created a collapsing middle class. That is why I think IMHO, that the US economy is eventually doomed and will eventually have a massive correction which will collapse the stock market and which will create the next great depression. IMHO another great depression in the USA is just a matter of when and not if.
This is interesting. I thought the "Research Triangle" area was one of the hot areas of the country. Wonder what the equivelent areas of the rust belt look like.
@AmericanRuffian, this mall is centered in the heart where American engineers used to work--in an industrial park. The Research Triangle Park is now void of electronic design and manufacturing. It all went to China and India.
In the South small industries were done in by regulations, outsourcing and NAFTA. This happened a few years ago but these folks suffer in quiet anonymity, no flash mobs, no riots, no hatred of the US. A mall is just a place to shop when compared to the homes and lives that have been destroyed even before the economic downturn. And to what end? Traitors among us have stripped this nation of it's future and have condemned the American Ideal to history's junk pile.
Yes, like you said. it is really sad. You alluded to all the laid off engineers and technical people from Nortel an Ericson as they are shutting up shop. More than likely, I would suspect that companies like Ericcson and Nortel are in the process of outsourcing most of their technical jobs to India and China.
Malls like this are the canaries in the coal mine as the middle class of American becomes more and more of an extinct species as the middle class jobs get shipped overseas!
@ed7hunt And so unfortunately is the middle class of this country. Wall Street and Corporate America are flying high to new record setting levels like never before seen with record setting profits for the last two or three years, salaries and bonuses for CEOs, Hedge fund Managers, and corporate boards of directors are also at record setting levels while Main Street USA withers and dies on the vine. Is that the future we all have to look forward to for America?
oh wait. nvm. disregard this comment. i thought this mall was completely closed down and there was still stuff on the racks. but apparently, its just lonely.
@EconCat88, the economy is dying and not getting better. I haven't been back to this mall, but found two more similar to this one at Myrtle Beach, SC completely empty.
Did anyone give you crap about video taping. Of course it looks like no one was there. I have had freinds try this before and were booted. Sad situation.
Yeah, if I walked into a Mall playing that horrendous music, I wouldn't be shopping there either.
